Aperture Academy Photography Workshops
Hello Fellow Flickerites! I know it's been awhile since I've posted...life with Aperture Academy has me busier into the business side of photography than I could have ever imagined. Just wait until you see what we have coming in 2012!
I'm just returning from three weeks in Alaska. The first week was our Aperture Academy Inside Passage Workshop, then I headed up to the Alaskan Interior for some personal shooting.
This image is of an adolescent Alaskan Grizzly Bear plucks a random Sockeye Salmon from the river during the fall spawning season...just another victim in the bears plight to fatten up for a long, cold winter.
After a long night of election woes and a pending outcome, I am certain that many Americans and some of our allies feel like these two very sleepy spring cubs today. Everyone should step outside this morning and take a deep breath. There is still air beneath the clouds. It may seem that the darkest corners are just around the bend but patience is all we can have at this point. Despair serves little purpose. Patience, resolve, dedication and education are our fortitude. And sleep! Sleep is a necessity, not a luxury. Make certain to turn off your TV, computer, cell phone and your weary mind and rest! #Bearcubs

parked for the night, late afternoon in british columbia's cariboo mountains, happy hour completed i was about to wander down a logging road
wandering up that same road was this healthy bruiser, who saw me scramble for a lens and meet him/her outside
non-plussed, bear went about bear things while i tried to maintain my excitement...i began to talk to bear which is when he really perked up and decided to take cover
i resumed my walk, though down another log road as i was parked at a four-road junction, i scared bear again (in truth, he scared me) as he was still in the area, doing bear things in dense bush
at 0213 hours, the dashcam registered movement...during my morning pretrip i found three paw prints on the front fender and hood of my van, never heard or felt a thing
I woke to four little voices this morning, asking if they could play in the Mardi Gras treasures!!
"Mama! Mama! We need the Mardi Gras crowns! We are going to play "Royalty" today! May we?!"
"Oh sure, Bene! Give me a moment to get dressed and I will get them out for you!"
"Thank you, Mama!" sang out four little voices!

We only have a very minimal amount of belongings with us right now—most of our possessions are packed up and stored, some nearly impossible to get to. The state of our silverware drawer feels like an illustration of my life—messy, working to manage with minimal necessities and trying to remember to give thanks for what we do have and for God’s provision. On this day, as I opened the silverware drawer where we have no dividers to separate the different utensils, I found beauty in the chaos—unique patterns, warm colors reflected from the wooden drawer, light bouncing off the shiny silver.

As a way to cope with circumstances beyond my control, survive and work to keep fighting for life I decided to try to take at least one photo (or more) each day. I call this “a photo (or more) a day.” Practicing this form of therapeutic photography helps me work to focus on the present moment, gives me something familiar and enjoyable to focus on as I use photography skills that have become like second-nature to me and being able to view the images I capture helps me recall what I was thinking, feeling and noticing at the moment when I created the photos. I may not always have the energy, time or capacity to share photos from this series—especially with the very challenging circumstances my family and I are experiencing—and will do my best to continue taking a photo (or more) a day even if I’m not able to share.

CSX's SD50-2's are a pleasant sight to have on the GE crowded railway. This day's Q277 featured CSX 8604 in the lead, speeding under the endangered B&O CPL bridge at W.E. Cairo, OH. With their numbers dwindling year after year, a chase was in order, even if it meant getting him at high sun.

Necessity is the mother of invention, yes? I needed some clothing reference and also to flex some atrophied shutterbug muscles. This is one of the products of that experiment.
