Auttiköngäs is a beautiful destination throughout all seasons. The Auttikönkä waterfalls are among the most stunning in Finland. The Auttikönkä nature trail, stretching almost 4 km, takes you across the waterfall, through the primeval forest, and towards the rocks. An interesting and diverse nature trail begins at the Pirttikahvila courtyard. Currently, Auttiköngäs is part of the Northern Finnish forest protection program for ancient forests. The main attraction is the 16-meter-high Auttiköngäs waterfalls flowing in a steep, rocky gorge. The name Autti originates from the Sámi word ávzi, meaning gorge or valley. The term köngäs is commonly found in the names of waterfalls in Northern Finland. The water continues its course to the bottom of the gorge in various streams, roaring loudly between the rocks. The nature trail continues through a serene old forest to a hilltop with a view over the Taiga forests. The gorge where Auttiköngäs foam originates was formed millions of years ago by powerful earthquakes that created the fault line through which the river now flows. The nearby Korouoma Gorge is also part of the same fault zone. Since the melting of the continental glaciers ,around 8000–9000 BC, the area has essentially retained its current form. Historically, the Auttijoki River has been a significant trade route. From the late 19th century to the 1970s, the river was used for log floating. Due to the steepness of the waterfall, it was impossible to float logs downstream naturally, so a log chute was built up to the falls. Today, the chute is preserved as a cultural heritage site.

Auttiköngäs is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Finland, surrounded by the tranquility of the taiga forest. The Auttikönkä nature trail takes you over the waterfall, into the primeval forest, and towards the rocks. An interesting and diverse nature trail begins on the premises of the wooden café-restaurant Pirttikahvila. In Finland, traditional wooden houses are often referred to as "wooden cabins" or "wooden chalets." The Finnish word for a wooden house is "puutalo." The entire area, including the puutalo, is managed by the Nature Services - Metsähallitus. In the restaurant, we enjoyed a delicious reindeer soup made by the owner, Eerikki. According to the owner, the forest is his second home. In Pirttikahvila's catering, you can also find nature-inspired products such as sparkling drinks and homemade jam to take home. The popular Auttikönkää nature trail can be traversed on foot even in winter. Please be aware that especially stairs and hills can be very slippery, as there is no winter maintenance on the route.

"Howling Wolf Silhouette" by Patti Deters. A lone wolf howls into the night, where a full moon rises behind mountain silhouettes, casting an array of warm colors across the sky and reflecting on the calm water of the lake below. This wilderness scene is serene and evokes the wild beauty of nature at dusk. The canine animal and grasses along the foreground of the shoreline are in silhouette, creating nice contrast with the colorful mountains and sky in the background. "Golden Woods - Blur" by Patti Deters. A distant sunset (out of frame) casts a brilliant orange glow in this autumn woodland, creating a bright, back-lit forest scene. A blur technique has been applied to create an artistic abstract effect. "Red Fox Mom with Child - Oil Paint" by Patti Deters. A female red fox (Vulpes vulpes) shelters her pup as she looks with intent at something off camera. The little juvenile kit, really still just a baby, feels safe as he hides behind mama. This photograph of the two foxes is presented with a square crop and several heavy oil paint textures and overlays - the thick brushstrokes and dark vibrant colors of the background frame the mother and child nicely. "Egret Chick with Parent - Texture” by Patti Deters. A baby Great White Egret (Ardea alba) is sitting safe in her nest, protected by her adult parent. Egrets are long-legged water birds, and are members of the heron family. This young bird is the only one in her nest though most clutches have 3-4 eggs. The parent egret is doing some nest housekeeping, arranging the twigs, sticks, and branches to her liking. Several painterly textures and overlays have been applied for artistic effect. Indian music of a strong and breezy spiritual nature inspired me to create this piece.

From my 2014 series, 'Sanctuary', created for my final year of studies.

"I think that my love for photography was first kindled during long stints in hospital, photographing flowers that my mother had brought me. Throughout my adolescence I struggled with my mental and physical health, and nature was a sanctuary and escape for me. I lament the disconnection between our everyday lives and the natural world. The vulnerability, hope and suffering that I experienced, combined with the beauty and majesty of nature, inspired this body of work."

"Hike Into The Woods" by Patti Deters. A lone hiker walks along a forest trail as he hikes deeper into the woods. The hiker is in silhouette and is shown with walking sticks and a backpack. The trees and forest floor have been blurred for artistic effect, and the hiking path is edged with small silhouette scrub bushes. "Sunset Blur with Heron Silhouette - Texture" by Patti Deters. A Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) bird takes flight and is seen in silhouette against a vibrant sunset that reflects off a body of water, creating a tranquil and peaceful scene. The colorful sky transitions from warm oranges to cooler purples, while several custom textures and a bit of motion blur have been applied to add a distinct, painterly quality to the entire image. "Sunset Cliffs, San Diego - Painterly" by Patti Deters. Vivid colors in this rugged coastal scene at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park in San Diego, California USA capture a natural archway bridge formed in the cliff leading into the sea near a small cove. The Pacific Ocean can be seen in the background with gentle waves in the surf. Several brush stroke overlays give a textured and dynamic feel to the water, earth, and sky creating a sense of movement and artistry. "Forest Fox Kit with Butterfly" by Patti Deters.

A young Red Fox kit (Vulpes vulpes) plays with a monarch butterfly. The late afternoon sun shines through the hazy forest creating a magical woodland scene. This playful image started with a photograph of the curious baby fox, then I placed the butterfly and applied several misty and painterly textures to create the bokeh fantasy atmosphere. "Frosty Cherries - Square" by Patti Deters. This closeup of three red crab apple cherries shows the bright red fruit still hanging from tree stems, frozen solid and frosted with ice and snow. The hoar frost brings out the beauty of these little fruits, while the cold weather preserves them a bit for birds and other animals that eat the nutritious berries. Crabapple trees are generally known for their pretty spring blooms, but when covered in icy hoar frost, I think winter is when they are most beautiful. the second day after we arrived at Edisto Island I walked the pier in the quiet of the early morning.. ..a piece of white caught my eye and looked as if it was floating on top of the water..this seagull feather... and there were many of them... looked like minimalistic art to me... I captured a companion piece just a bit further down the dock..simple.. beautiful and nature inspired..another one of those images taken with the Tamron 70-200 lens

"Two Swans Silhouette with Mountains at Sunset" by Patti Deters. A serene lake reflects the glow of a vibrant orange sunset with a pair of swans in silhouette. The background of this colorful drawing features a huge sun just starting to dip below blue mountain peaks as a flock of birds fly off in the distance. The foreground shows a shoreline of marsh grasses and cattails, also in silhouette. The swans are looking at each other, perhaps in love, and cast a soft reflection on the water. This is one in a series of these artworks and some of the others can be found a the links below. I made this new beret, nature inspired, with an old recycled beret (of my mother).

First of all i dyed the beret with a green color (it was white). Then i made the needle felted flower (i had the idea from the beret stalk :P) . I put a steel wire inside the flower to raise the flower up.

Hope you like it :)

"Our ability to perceive quality in nature begins, as in art, with the pretty. It expands through successive stages of the beautiful to values as yet uncaptured by language."

First time I visited this remote region of RMNP Colorado was in 2015. I revisited again late summer of 2016 with my wife. It was not as easy as I thought to retrace my steps, it was not exactly on a maintained trail or along side of a road, more of bring a can of Counter Assault and a compass. Luckily, I did find the scene again as I wanted to re-shoot to do it proper justice.

The mist and low clouds move about rapidly at this altitude.. Bright & sunny one minute, then this wonderfully ethereal atmosphere takes over. For whatever reason - I dunno - I've never pulled this one out of the storage files to process.

Dark and enigmatic, this particular gnome hat is brooding with mystery! Tones of warm dark brown cascade down the chin strap and it is appropriately adorned with a poetic mocking bird button.

Out of all of the mountains that make up the Alps, the Matterhorn is probably the best known. Meaning “peak in the meadows” in German, the nearly 15,000-foot-tall mountain straddles the Swiss-Italian border and has long been a bucket list destination for climbers.

Immerse yourself in the grandeur of the Alps with "Majestic Matterhorn," a captivating pen illustration that pays homage to the legendary peak of the Matterhorn. This artwork beautifully captures the awe-inspiring beauty and iconic silhouette of one of the world's most famous mountains.

With intricate pen strokes, the artist brings the Matterhorn to life on paper, showcasing its rugged slopes, sharp edges, and towering presence. Ihantola (Wonderful World) designed by master builder O. E. Koskinen and built by a housing company owned by workers. The façade of Ihantola is lively, with references to vegetal and national-romantic motifs that were in vogue among art nouveau architects. The plaster cladding is painted pink. The castle-like solidity is softened by the many natural and geometric elements on the façade made of natural stones embedded in the plaster. One of the motifs on the façade is the construction year of the building, 1906.

I pray the Lord my soul to keep.

Guard me Jesus through the night,

The building was designed to house the Pohjola fire insurance company and many of the decorative elements allude to fire (bears holding torches etc.) Bears, squirrels and other animals adorn the facades, along with various mythological forest inhabitants from Nordic folklore. Pohjola, in the Kalevala, is the evil land of the North. Symbolically, the ornaments on the facade represent the bad luck that could befall clients should they fail to take out insurance from the company.

Facade decorations of the Pohjola building include 2 rising suns, 25 bears, 20 foxes, 17 eagles, 30 pine trees and over 800 pine cones.

"Hello, said the Ladybug to the Mushrooms - Red" by Patti Deters. This charming and whimsical drawing shows a ladybug flying between two mushrooms. The shell of the little ladybug is the same shade of bright red as the mushroom caps. The ladybug seems to be saying hello to the two friendly mushrooms she explores and makes her way from the small mushroom to the large mushroom. These two fungi are red-capped and dotted with white spots that identify them as Fly Agaric (Amanita muscara), one of the most iconic and recognizable species of fungi. Though poisonous in real life, this cartoon drawing shows them as cute and magical. The ladybug, also sometimes called Asian beetle, is a brilliant shade of red with black spots, and its wings are spread out in flight. The overall effect of the image is one of joy and lightheartedness, as if the ladybug and mushrooms are characters in a storybook come to life. Perfect for a child's playroom or bedroom, it's the kind of playful image that might make you smile or feel a sense of childlike wonder, and is sure to bring delight to the viewer. This piece is also available several other colors, including blue green (teal), green, purple, and pink. I spent spring this year in the UK. I’ve found that I need to throw myself into the dark of winter to never take for granted the light of spring. My favorite part of each year is this very season. I love witnessing life waking up, the air gets sweeter with soft breezes carrying the scents of new leaves and blush blossoms, the day stays longer, and it reminds me that there is always light and fresh blooms at the end of any personal winter that visits me.

In April I had the pleasure of doing a one-on-one personal session with @aurelija.photography in the prettiest English garden, and it was there that these pieces were captured.

More to come from that day including a behind the scenes youtube video!

My next workshop in the UK will be in August / September. Spaces will be limited. Email me at info@bellakotak.com for further details (including dates).
