How far are you from a naturally dark night sky? In increasing steps, this world map (medium | large) shows the effect of artificial night sky brightness on the visual appearance of the night sky. The brightness was modeled using high resolution satellite data and fit to thousands of night sky brightness measurements in recent work. Color-coded levels are compared to the natural sky brightness level for your location. For example, artificial sky brightness levels in yellow alter the natural appearance of the night sky. In red they hide the Milky Way in an artificial luminous fog. The results indicate that the historically common appearance of our galaxy at night is now lost for more than one-third of humanity. That includes 60% of Europeans and almost 80% of North Americans, along with inhabitants of other densely populated, light-polluted regions of planet Earth. via NASA ift.tt/2970a3C

Naval Academy graduates retired astronaut Frank Culbertson, Jr., ( Captain USN ret.) NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden (Major General, USMC ret.) and Mark Hubbard, Naval Academy paused to reflex upon those who have fallen to protect the freedoms Americans enjoy everyday.
The Goddard Veterans Advisory Committee (VAC) presented a Memorial Day commemorative event, May 23 in the Building #8 auditorium. Keynote speaker for the event was NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden, also a retired Major General, U.S. Marine Corps. Attendees included Goddard Center Director Chris Scolese, himself a Navy veteran; Tuskegee Airman Charles Pryde; several Goddard World War II veterans; several members of the Wounded Warrior unit, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center; Goddard veterans and community members. This is the second year Goddard veterans have sponsored an event to honor those who have made the supreme sacrifice in defense of the freedoms we enjoy everyday. ‘In Memory of America’s Fallen’ was attended by more than 250 Goddard community members, and viewed by countless more at satellite locations and in their offices.

An active region on the sun emitted a mid-level solar flare, peaking at 4:47 a.m. EST on Nov. 5, 2014. This is the second mid-level flare from the same active region, labeled AR 12205, which rotated over the left limb of the sun on Nov. 3. The image was captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) in extreme ultraviolet light that was colorized in red and gold. Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel. This flare is classified as an M7.9-class flare. M-class flares are a tenth the size of the most intense flares, the X-class flares. The number provides more information about its strength. NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX, spacecraft has made it possible for scientists to construct the first comprehensive sky map of our solar system and its location in the Milky Way galaxy. The new view will change the way researchers view and study the interaction between our galaxy and sun. The sky map was produced with data that two detectors on the spacecraft collected during six months of observations. The detectors measured and counted particles scientists refer to as energetic neutral atoms.
The energetic neutral atoms are created in an area of our solar system known as the interstellar boundary region. This region is where charged particles from the sun, called the solar wind, flow outward far beyond the orbits of the planets and collide with material between stars. The energetic neutral atoms travel inward toward the sun from interstellar space at velocities ranging from 100,000 mph to more than 2.4 million mph. This interstellar boundary emits no light that can be collected by conventional telescopes.

This infrared image of shows Tropical Storm Nadine struggling in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. The image was taken on Sept. 22 at 03:35 UTC. Purple areas indicate the strongest thunderstorms and heaviest rainfall.
