I am generally interested in reading biographies and picking this particular title has to do with the references to pre-war Romanian history, or rather flitting glimpses of it: Prince Philip spent several holidays, as a child, with his cousin King Michael de Romania, son of King Carol II by Princess Helen of Greece, Queen Mother of Romania. King Michael is also a cousin of Elizabeth II, through his paternal grandmother, Queen Marie of Romania, a grand daughter of Queen Victoria.

Trawling the English literature about snippets of Romanian history, as they may appear fleetingly, in various such accounts, does help to piece together a mosaic of Romania's past, which has been much distorted and indeed Censored during Communism.

King Michael's Consort Anna de Romania herself is a cousin of both Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, through the Royal House of Denmark - Anna being a princess of Bourbon-Parma as well as princess of Denmark and therefore equally related to Queen Elizabeth II through Queen Alexandra, spouse of Edward VII. King Michael met his future wife on the occasion of the marriage of Queen Elizabeth to Prince Philip.

Little that the old Irish Reverend Swift expected, EVER, to fall foul of Romanian communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu: not that Ceausescu ever read Swift, not even ANY books at all - he was famous for being semi-literate and to speak a very poor Romanian...

Yet would you believe it or not Jonathan Swift fell foul of the Communist censorship... read on the problems encountered by an editor in Bucharest in the 1980's who tried to publish Swift''s Satyres:

“Publishing Swift’s satires in 1985, I myself fought a lot with the censor in order to include “A Modest proposal” concerning eating Irish children, which had become subversive here on account of meat shortage in Romania. Faced with the alternative of not publishing the book at all, or doing it without the famous text, I gave it up. The supreme level of censorship was a department of the (Communist) Party Central Committee.”

Gulliver's Travels was published in 1726. Though it has often been mistakenly thought of as a children's book, it is a great satire of the times. Gulliver's Travels is a misanthropic anatomy of human nature; a sardonic looking-glass. It asks its readers to refute it, to deny that it has not adequately characterized human nature and society. Each of the 4 books has a different theme, but all are attempts to deflate human pride. Critics hail the work as a satiric reflection on the failings of Enlightenment modernism.

"A Tiny Tidbit of Information for Your Enlightenment"…

A lot of different expressions have the word "dicken" in them.

Whys is that?

It goes back a lot further than Charles Dickens, though it does seem to have been borrowed from the English surname, most likely sometime in the sixteenth century or before. (The surname itself, no doubt, derives from Dickin or Dickon, familiar diminutive forms of Dick.)

It was, and still is, though people no longer know it, a euphemism for the Devil...much like the word deuce, as in old oaths.

This is a version of Turndust, an artist's book project I am currently working on. This is an early stage 'storyboard' version. I've posted it because I am interested in seing if I can use community on Flickr to add something to the design process. What do you think of it? What could be improved? What's good? What does it make you think about?

I'm planning to develop the book for screenprint in one or two colours with hand colouring in watercolour, so each book will be a little different, although still part of an edition. I plan to include new versions and working-up on Flickr as I go along.

Since this book is intended as a narrative, it's best read from beginning to end. I recommend looking at the set.

Heroic Option - The Irish in the British Army

by Desmond and Jean Bowen

This is a Canadian couple born in the early 1920s who produced a scholarly very informative easy read book, which in a way is mind-blowing thinking of what has been a tremendous commitment of sacrifice and determination given by so many Irish heroes who built the British empire: not just Anglo-Irish toffs, but humble Catholics from poor peasant stock. Some names we know - we all know: the Duke of Wellington, Alexander of Tunis, Montgomery of Alamein, Alannbrooke - they and soldiers of their ilk made their reputation in America, in the Peninsular and Crimean wars, in India of the Raj, the Boer war and more recently in the First and Second World Wars, where all these past shadows come back to life, unexpectedly with some glorious stories.

I would not know if Desmond and Joan Bowen are related to Elizabeth Bowen of Bowen Court in Ireland (and Oxford) to be able to suggest that the talent runs in the family. But regardless of this possible link which may explain the Irish interest, this is a book which holds its own - a good read of humour and humanity doubled by sound research - a book which I recommend.

I bought my copy at the little bookshop counter at the Army Museum in Chelsea.

E situazioni. 80 occasioni per raccontarmi, 80 momenti vissuti con ironia, gioia e incazzatura. Mi chiamo Andrea. Ma questo l’ho già detto altrove. Altrove sì.

E' il libro per chi ha voglia di cimentarsi con i racconti brevi e brevissimi, le false poesie (prosa poetica, nda), la prosa illustrata e i disegni impertinenti.

Veloce per chi ha fretta, lento per chi ha tempo, acuto e poco smussato, non ha un inizio e non ha una fine.

C’è solo quello che sta nel mezzo.

80 pezzi, scollegati tra loro o collegati per caso.

Riflessioni, divagazioni, invenzioni.

Gioia e rabbia. Ma sempre con ironia.

Argomenti che ognuno di voi affronta nel proprio intimo. O almeno io.

In this picture you see the proud author (Mr Giuliano Sadar) holding his new book "El Paron", a biography of the famous football coach Nereo Rocco. On his left the (even more) proud editor of the book (me) and on his right Mr Cesare Maldini, former centre half for A.C. Milan.

He represented Italy at international level in the 1962 and 1966 World Cups.

And yes, BITH, 1966 was a great year for England!!!
