I spent a very fun morning photographing this event! Dirty Mutter 2022 in Black Mountain. An almost 2 km course with fun obstacles and MUDD. A great fundraiser for PAWS it Forward and Rescue Ranch Society.
Names I've never known seem more heartfelt in the last direct light. Golden red as the sunset rends the horizon, I'd just finished brushing snow in faded letters. Here among the Chutes, born to the name, married out or in – I spotted four names I hadn't read before. Anzonetta, Eliakim, Eliphal, and Zeporah. Set in stone and totally cold, still a warmth when you speak them out, and a hope you've said them right. I find myself muttering new names on first discovery, trying to identify their place on my tongue and lips. Where should you be standing? Up from my lungs and through my teeth, resting right under my feet. None of these four were terribly old, three only in their 30s. The years were sure short here, and no stone planted before 1862, none later than 1891. I lifted what I could from the earth last April, when the frost feel apart and lost its grip. Now they're just as frozen the right way up, catching lengthening shadows, cast straight down this river valley. Just seconds slipping now, and soon enough, dropped down in the beautiful dark. I feel nothing but the loving light.

Mother of God Church (Mutter Gottes Kirche)
The German Catholics of Covington attended St. Mary Parish on 5th Street from the time of its founding. However, as their numbers increased, the need for a separate parish began apparent. In 1841, the Reverend Ferdinand Kuhr, a native of Eslohe, Prussia, was appointed to organize the Covington Germans into a new congregation. A temporary chapel was set up in a building on Scott Street in 1841. Mother of God was the second Catholic parish to be established in Northern Kentucky. In the spring of 1842, the congregation purchased a lot at the southwest corner of 6th and Washington. On this lot, a new church was constructed. The German population rapidly increased throughout the pre-Civil War era in Covington. A number of new daughter parishes were formed from the territory of Mother of God to meet these needs of these newcomers. Despite the development of new German parishes in the city, Mother of God congregation continued to flourish.
In 1870, Father Kuhr and the parishioners began planning for the construction of a new Mother of God Church. The old church building was demolished and ground was broken for the new Italian Renaissance Revival structure. The new Mother of God Church sported a large portico supported by four Corinthian columns, two large towers and a cupola.
