A cool, cloudy day, significant other, cup of coffee, the beach all to yourselves and the mutts. Doesn't get much better than this.

Just saw this today and I don’t remember posting it. So cute!

Hoodoos come in differing sizes in the Bisti (De-Na-Zin) Wilderness. This amazing wilderness area is located in the northwestern corner of New Mexico.

They are called this as most Mallard ducks in Florida have hybridized and mixed in the other species. It's too bad, as a pure Mallard male duck is spectacular.

It was interesting finding a pair of Geep on each end of an SD70 ACe, seen here at Palmer Lake with what I am cure was the Pikes Peak Local. 1.30.17

Cool day, hot coffee, and taking the mutts for a walk on the beach.

Good morning everyone. Over a week ago I posted a collage of the seven (7) different species of woodpeckers found in the State of Indiana. At the time I mentioned that the Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) seen on the left is the largest woodpecker found in North America and the Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) on the right being the smallest. With this in mind I thought a side by side comparison would provide a much better feel for people (especially for my overseas friends), of the huge size difference between the two.

Both birds are perched in the same spot, on the same tree. The focal length of both shots was between 280-290mm and taken from the same exact distance and location of yours truly. Both birds are females while the Pileated was photographed last summer, the Downy was photographed earlier this month.

For the record, the Pileated Woodpecker ranges from 15.7 - 19.3 inches (40 - 49 cm) in length with a wingspan of 26 - 29.5 inches (66 - 75 cm) while the much smaller Downy is 5.5 - 6.7 inches (14 - 17 cm) in length with a wing span of 9.8 - 11.8 inches (25 - 30 cm).

As for the title, Mutt and Jeff is a long-running American newspaper comic strip created by cartoonist Bud Fisher in 1907 about "two mismatched tinhorns". Today Mutt & Jeff is a "term" often used to describe two complete opposites.

Thank you for stopping by...and I hope you're having a most pleasant weekend.

Happy 4th! I guess the upside is I got a lot of snuggling from my baby girl.

The Fairbanks coal turn crosses the frozen Tanana River, in Nenana, AK, on a frigid negative 20 morning. After crossing the river the railroad will make a 180 degree turn to the right as they descend to ground level. The roadbed can be seen through the trees behind the building located in the shot. The frozen Tanana River is that white expanse at the upper left of the shot. While Nenana was once a bustling railroad town it has been reduced to the occasional load. The empty hopper first out on this train means they have work to do on the Suntrana Branch out of Healy. Usually they will work the branch first and then load their hoppers at Usibelli.
