Chicory, yes, the coffee substitute, not the flowers but the roasted roots. That's what they say, but I don't know anyone who digs it up, it is rather bought at the herbalist's.

The flowers are blue, but sometimes mutate to white or pink. Here we see the normal flower and the mutated one. These are two specimens that grew together.

Cichorium was the Latin name for chicory, derived from the Greek kichora.

Intybus comes from the Greek èntubon which means chicory or endive.

Achicoria, sí, la sustituta del café, no las flores sino las raíces tostadas. Eso dicen por ahí, pero no conozco a nadie que se dedique a desenterrarla, más bien se compra en la herboristería.

Las flores son azules, pero en ocasiones mutan al blanco o al rosa. Aquí vemos la flor normal y la mutada. Se trata de dos ejemplares que crecían juntos.

Cichorium era el nombre latino de la achicoria que deriva del griego kichora.

Intybus procede del griego èntubon que significa achicoria o escarola.

Neighborhood charcoal 'factory' in Liuxia Dongli (Hongqiao). This is where loose coal is pressed into charcoal briquets (木炭, mùtàn): perforated cylinders of coal, approximately 6 inches in diameter and 4 inches high, used for cooking and heating throughout the ping fang (平房) areas, the one-story brick homes that are still found in some parts of the city, especially in Hebie and Hongqiao districts. The delivery men with flatbed trikes and small motorized carts are waiting for the next batch to finish.

In the late 90s ping fang(s) were found throughout the older parts of the city where urban roosters crowed in each morning. They've dramatically dwindled over the last decade and are now rare sites in Tianjin. Chai (拆), the character to tear down painted on brick walls marking particular sites for destruction, is closing in on this neighborhood too. Across the river in Hebei Dist. the neighborhood known as Xiao Wang Zhuang is now in the process of being leveled, though there's a fringe that lives on as the outer wall, as a buffer between the new construction area and tree-canopied small road/path beside the river. This appears to be also happening here.

We found a few red-capped robin-chats with this affliction to their legs, some worse, some just in the starting phase.

Scaly leg mites are responsible for the growths (Knemidocoptes mutans) that can lead to loss of toes and sometimes even limbs. Badly affected birds will loose condition and eventually die of malnutrition. The mites are microscopic relatives of ticks. They spend their complete life cycle under the skin of birds. I wouldn't be surprised if the sewerage environment has this burden as a price...
