This morning I attended the Memorial Day service at the small Union Cemetery in Redwood City which has been in the National Register of Historic Places for nearly 40 years. It's the longest running Memorial Day commemoration on the Peninsula. The cemetery was founded in 1859, and 79 veterans of several wars are buried here.

Have you set sail, today or any other?
do you harbour hopes, or fears?
is your port of calling awaiting you?
or, are you drifting out to sea?
we never truly know until afloat
no grass then becomes greener
leaving our emotions upon deck
the stern homes sentiment
and a bow brimming with ambition
both sides of equal feeling
manufactured to survive
from two ports we truly thrive!
