For us Mumbaikars garden is a luxury. For example I live in a typical working class Maharastrian society, have the luxury of a small patch of public garden bang opposite my society. Although it is rare that I step inside the place, I do like to go and take a walk when it is all empty. Some times I like to sit there early mornings and just watch the world around me jump start their day. I love to feel the wet grass under my feet and enjoy the early morning fresh air. In short greenery is a luxury for us Mumbaikars with the construction jungle spring up on every patch of earth in the city. Some of us find alternatives by setting up miniature garden in side small earthen pots and set it up on the edge of the balcony. I am one of them. It is not exactly a jungle but I have an aloe, a fern, a show plant and a money plant which I had flicked it from my neighbor who stays in the ground floor. (They say it brings in money if one flicks the plant).

Last weekend I realized that I need to add some color to my so called miniature garden and bought in these beauties. I don’t think I can explain them any better but these beauties remind me of Bipasha Basu singing "Beedi Jalai le" in between a bunch of men.

Muslims come in different shape size strata only the packaging differs...

We are both UP born

We are both Mumbaikars

We are both Bandra residents

We are both Indians

It was Bhima the spitting Guru and rod piercer of Goddess Marriammen , who I accidentally met a few years back, at Nehru Nagar slums , during the Marriammen feast .. and we became good friends ..

It was Bhima who introduced me to this feast that has passionately fascinated me no end , through him I shot the first Marriamman Feast at Macchimar Colony Mahim West ..and than I created links made friends shot the Marriammen Feast Sion Koliwada and the last concluded one at Madras Wadi Worli thanks to Shanmugham and Sundar a graphic designer all Tamil Hindus migrants and pucca Madrasi Mumbaikars.

I am invited to these rituals by Bhima and my other friends including Velu the Head Priest of Marriammen Temple Nehru Nagar Juhu.

I shot the piercings at Juhu beach, the animal slaughter in the morning and I follow the piercers and the main procession till Nehru Nagar where the rods the limes hung on needles attached to backs arms , the tiny trishuls in the ladies tongues and the hardcore hooks are removed .

This removing of the rods takes a lot of time , as this year there were more than 750 I think, and as I shoot this barefeet , it tires me out.. I left early .

Bhima is a very humble Tamil Hindu and is a devoted Marriammen follower worshiper.

Without him I dont think I could have documented all this ..

One person who wants to shoot this with vengeance is my American friend Dr Glenn Losack.. Marc De Clercq my Belgian friend had shot the Marriamman Macchimar feast three years back.

Luckily I am now a well known face at the feast and nobody objects to my shooting them...

The Dabbawalas are a quintessential part of the ethos of the city of Mumbai..

Dabbawalas are basically a group of service providers to office going people and to school kids, supplying the tiffin with their food to the destination of the person concerned, and they do it meticulously..they never Fail..

Their service has been evaluated as Sigma 6 endorsed by Forbes .

I have been shooting the Dabbawalas ,with spontaneous effort every time I spotted them, ..they are the vibrant spirit , unflinching devotion to duty..and proud Mumbaikars.

All their pictures and stories at my Flickr set ..on my photo stream.a

The entire area where I stay was a dhobi ghat ..gradually it was reclaimed from the sea and became Bandra Reclamation some parts called Lal Mitti..

Some slums refused to come under the charm of the builder so did not rise vertically...Indraji Nagar Rajeev Nagar and Hanuman Nagar...

There are thus many dhobis at the Bazar and in the vaious slums ..

The dhobis near my house are doing well as they get stock lot of export surplus to wash or press .

Over all the dhobis migrant from Uttar Pradesh like in ghetto like surroundings ..they live peacefully , mind their own business and dont mingle much.

The kids of the dhobis who are educated dont want to carry on with this bussiness .. and opt for jobs according to their qualification or experience.

The dhobis take a weekly off on Mondays ...but some work out of kindness ..I had to go to town I gave him an urgent shirt he pressed him dutifully charged me Rs 10.

Our Dhobi who was attached to us for over 20 years came from Shirly Rajan Road off Carter Road near the Cross , he was like family to us we took care of his needs .. gave him money bought his ticket to go to his hometown.. but they one day he left for good never came back..

For people like us Lucknow born in my case having lived in Mumbai since 54 it is tough to call any other place home besides Mumbai , the kids too were born in Mumbai and the roots spread down the soul of Mumbai, the grand children too were born in Mumbai.

My parents are buried in Mumbai are pucca Mumbaikars anyway.. they built a home away from their own home ...though my dad did add Lucknowi too his surname , I refused to add it .. it is my birthplace but nothing more nothing less , my karam bhumi made me a Pucca Mumbaikar too.

We lived at Wodehouse Road than Strand Colaba , my part of the family moved to Bandra 25 years back and a new set of roots were added to our family tree.

Mumbaikars must also experience a power cut once in a while. It was at 2am on 3rd Oct.07 at Panchleela, Hiranandani at Powai

The Mumbai Man.

Witnessed the chronicles of a Mumbaikar while I traveled for 4 hours today in the Harbor Lane local trains.
