Mumbaikars take their festivals very seriously, Janmashtami (the birth of Lord Krishna) is celebrated as 'Dahi Handi'. Groups of 'govindas' form a human pyramid and attempt to break a clay pot filled with butter milk and money hanging 20-60ft in the air. Its a sight; saffron clad boisterous hoards roam the city, the pandals offer street parties that rival Rio, and there's big moola at stake - Rs. 1cr this year at the Thane handi. To add to the spectacle; there are crowds by the millions (no jokes), celebrities, politicians, and safety equipment to die for..
This is organised sport. Notice the harnesses worn by the govindas to assist the climbers, the ring of hands to soften a fall. Each guy knows when and how to ascend and descend.
Promoting fitness in the long run, thousands of Mumbaikars assembled in the scenic heart of suburban Mumbai, Juhu. The Parinee Juhu half marathon was divided into two timed race events of 21km and 10km besides an untimed race of 4km, each of which culminated at the starting point, that is the Jamnabai Narsee School Grounds. With fitness icon Hrithik Roshan as the brand ambassador who has been imparting continual support since the inception of the marathon, this year, actors Zayed Khan and Sonnalli Seygall made their presence felt at the flag-off, bright and early at 5:30 in the morning! The route was through the tree-covered JVPD bylanes commencing from Jamnabai Narsee School Grounds, and crossing the iLoveMumbai sign, JW Marriott, Juhu Promenade to the newly renovated Lions Garden towards Bandra National College finally reaching Amarson store in Bandra and then taking U-turn from there to finally ending at Nana Nani Park – Versova.
The fourth edition of the Parinee Juhu Half Marathon witnessed the facilitation of a noble and charitable cause, paediatric heart surgeries! Organized by Get Fit through Sports Foundation and the Rotary Club of Mumbai Airport under the aegis of Maharashtra State District Athletic Association (MSDAA), the certification issued by the Parinee Juhu Half Marathon is valid for all major marathons. The event was followed by prize distribution at the hands of the celebrities.
Bharat Kapadia, Chairman of GetFit Thru Sports Foundation said, “It is always a pleasure to be associated with the Parinee Juhu Half Marathon. Collectively, all of us have done a mountain’s work in very less time and I’m glad we could pull this sporting event off so well!”
Biren Parekh, President of Rotary Club of Bombay Airport averred, “Our hearts beat for theirs! Our club tries its best to take responsibility of these children. Through sheer dedication and collective effort, we have made this marathon possible for the fourth time now!”
“It was indeed a pleasure to have Zayed and Sonnalli to be part of the marathon from the flag-off at 530am early in the morning to until after 9am where they distributed the prizes to the worthy winners!” signed off Atul Parekh, Vice Chairman of Get Fit Thru Sports Foundation. Every participant who made it to the finish line emerged as a winner and won a well-deserved medal!

For a city that is considered to be the financial capital of India, Mumbai also has a rather dark side to it. The city is dirty. And nothing brings a sense of shame and disgust to a Mumbaikar like me, than the polluted and unhygienic conditions found in this city. This pollution not only affects natural elements like the weather, but also affects the very people who live in it. Hindustan Times calls it the new pollution capital of the country. Its sad, revolting and even embarrassing.

Newspaper and Magz stall.
Love the color and spread..
Mumbai has a vociferous reading population who regularly find time and space to squeeze in a newspaper/magazine during the daily grind -Train travel
This is Mr Yeshwant Jadhav, I was highly impressed with his energy levels, there was no stopping this man, he was there when his boys of the Ganeshotsav Mandal Talwadi Mazgoan needed him, he was forever cheering them, encouraging them.. yes he is a leader al the way, he displayed this by his human emotions of love and camaraderie.
He was very polite was not at all surprised that I was a Muslim dressed in Saffron shooting his boys, he always had a kind word for me.
Yes Govinda is not just about religion it is about the human religiosity of bonding as Indians niether Hindu nor Muslim.
There were Muslim lads from Mazgaon who remembered me from Chor Bazar.
I made new friends Shehkar Bala, Datta Sadha Joshi who helped me shoot the pictures photographer Prakash who took me on the stage .
Yes this was a moment of my coming of age at 55 .
I think I learnt human values, I did not miss shooting the Ranade Road Govinda..
I will definitely vist these Talwadi friends when I go to pay my respect to Lord Ganesha at Mazgaon..
Thank you guys.
Thank you Mr Bal Nandgaonkar .

I shot this at Khar SV Road, yes I focused on his hand, , and his hand with which he does his begging, wiping his ass, scratching his body parts.
His hand that is a major tool at work, he needs no change of clothes, no soap, no toothbrush, no he does not need to iron his clothes
He does not need to launder his clothes that single pair that has stuck to him like a second skin.
He braves the inclement weather, the winter chill, just a sheet that they will wrap him up in when he chokes .But he has taken an extension on his life , he wont die yet, he wont come under a car, even the cars are scared of touching him, they dont want to soil their tyres with his putrid blood.
He does not need insulin shots, no tonics, he drinks country made hooch, that is poison but yet it does not kill him.
This is Mee Mumbaikar..
No wait a bit he is Indian..
They day he cops it they will add a number to his toe..Dead Indian.
a dead indian never dies
the beggar dead indian
lives as another
beggar will come
take his place
as time goes by
a karmic circle cries
he came he saw
he left behind
his memories
on the sly
on a street called why
when where how
no reply
into the souls
of dead souls
as street photographers

india is incomplete
without the vibrant
soul of mumbai
you can create another delhi
kolkatta lucknow chennai
humanly possible as politicians
you can call it shanghai

Every school kid has had a brush with the quintessential Bhaiyya of UP , selling sherbet in colored bottles of water or colored water in bottles that become sherbet , and the ice scraper to maki Ice Golas or ice balls on a stick..
And he is on every beach in Mumbai , or at Madh Islands or at Gorai, at Alibagh, Murud Janjira opposite municipal schools.
He is the integral face of our growing up, when we wore school uniforms , ogling at comely school girls with our acne splattered face..lasciviously licking the ice gola balls in default..yes sign language was the earliest form of our budding sensuality knocking the doorsteps of our pubescant jock straps.
The Ice Gola Wala is a pucca Mumbaikar ...though he is a Bhaiyya no doubt, its his magic golas that bought us this far....

I took his cab to go for some urgent work to Dadar, he was polite presentable and his cab was specklessly clean from within, I sat next to him , my madam sat at the back.
I took this shot before talking to him,he told me his name is Avhad he is from Chembur.
He drove silently and did not talk further even when I told him he had a very hefty and powerful surname.
I took two shots of this good man..he is a Maharastrian by birth and I am a Maharashtrian by Karma and Dharma.
I have been a Mumbaikar since I came here at the age of 1 and my parents both Shia Muslim migrants from Lucknow lie buried at Rehmatabad Shia cemetery holding hands side by side.
My children all three were born in Mumbai and my grand daughter is a Mumbaikar affectinately called Marziya Koli by the koli women of Bandra Bazar fish market in whose laps she grew with promfrets bangda gol rawas and smell of dry bombils .
Marziya understands the Koli language completely..
Last night when India won I took her down amidst firecrackers to shoot the celebrations at Shaheen building Bandra Bazar Road , she took 2 shots without being intimidated by the cheering kids.. I took the rest.
And Marziya as I reflect would be on my waist a few months old as I shot my surroundings.. and all those outings have helped and Marziya has a photo shoot next week by one of the best Mumbai photographers the versatile Pratik Koli and this is sheer coincidence that Pratik hails from the Koli family is one of my best friends among media persons.. we get off like cheese and firecrackers.

Mumbaikars enjoy their time by the sea on a sunday evening, as traffic along Marine Drive flows as usual
Monsoon has begun retreating.
This maybe the last BIG shower before the retreat.
Wanted to catch water droplet slowly falling off the coir rope but didnt work out so.
This photo has just the coir in foreground with a bokeh sort of at the back rendered by the wet lush green leaves of a coconut tree.
I couldn't resist uploading the image for its eye refreshing green backdrop.
Part of Elder's Run.
The elderly men and women brought life into the event with their energy, enthusiasm and vigour.
Wow, it was a really wonderful experience seeing them in action.
No wonder they transformed the mileS into Smile.
