I clicked this picture at Shivaji Park beach. Although it was pretty crowded, I was able to isolate this man. With him staring out at the sea alone, I could bring out the lonely Mumbaikar within him.⠀

This is my new set at Flickr.com , I shot it this evening, and I skipped the Dasshera function and the Ramlila at Shivaji Park Dadar , I also did not get time to shoot the Bengal Club Durgotsav this year..it is regretful as I would shoot the Kali Temple too but than the Goddess wanted me to shoot her , her devotees at Juhu Beach..

Unfortunately my camera CCD has dust spots I wont have the time to tweak out the spots so see the emotions of Durga Visarjan , the euphoria the intense love of the Bengali Mumbaikar and ignore the flaws in my pictures ..I shot this with a poetic passion luckily I had company , my dear friend from Reuters Danish Siddiqui was covering this event too..

This is a long series too..

Kalbadevicha Ganraj Aagman Sohla 2019

Shooting the Ganesh Visarjan at Nana Chowk on the way to the Girgaum Chowpatty beach, has its own quintessential charm.

I was first introduced to this pictorial adventure by my Guru Shreekanth Malushte and his son Himanshu.

I have been a Colaba guy but hardly visited this place during Ganesh Visarjan.

And I saw the beauty and grandeur once after I had moved to Bandra Bazar Road.

On Visarjan day normally I shot Lal Bagh Cha Raja in the day time and from Ganesh Gully moved barefoot walking away to Girgaum Chowpatty.

And breaking my Ramzan fast at Nana Chowk.

I would shoot till midnight than catch a cab come home to my parents house at Strand Cinema.

The following morning return to shoot the Lal Bagh Cha Raja as he arrived after a long march.

This year 2008 I skipped Girgaum chowpatty instead followed Lal Bagh Cha Raja on foot, without footwear , and this was the first time I did so, this marathon effort, and I broke my fast at Byculla.

The volunteers of Lal Bagh Cha Raja saw that I was taken care of , and also gave me fruits for my next days fast that I thought I would bring in at Chowpatty.

However I had to abort folowing the Raja till his final destination.

I am a diabetic and my sugar levels were causing me discomfort, so I left from Kumbharwada , walked from Null Bazar to Bhendi Bazar and took a cab home to Bandra.

This was a great experience especially at Nagpada where the Muslims felicitate the King Of Kings of Mumbai..This was what I wanted to shoot Hindu Muslim amity, this is the free spirit of love for all religiosities and faith that comes from being a Mumbaikar..

This is the true magic of Mumbai , and no politician worth his salt can ever take it away by his parochialism or factionalism.

Mumbaikars are a breed apart, I saw the erstwhile Shiv Sainiks serving cold water to the processionists during Moharam at Dongri on the way to the Shia cemetery at Mazgaon..

We are one inspite of the color of our spiritual clothes , and this is Mumbai that my father and mother migrants from Lucknow chose for me and the Shakir generations to come after us..

My father came to Mumbai at the age of 17 - and he and my mother lie side by side at peace at the Rehmatabad Shia cemetery..

Yes Mumbai remains with you after death takes away your flesh..

I cannot think of any ther place that will ever replace Mumbai...

And it is dieties like the Lal Bagh Cha Raja that beckon us to become a part of Hope and Hindutva of our collective nationalism and Indian ethos.

A child is a product of his or her surroundings , Marziya Shakir has grown with the Kolis of Bandra Bazar Road in the laps of her favorite koli Aunty Manjula , who lives at Worli Koliwada but sells fish at Bandra Bazar Fish market.

Now 2 years old Marziya leads by my finger to the fish market we beat our stress here , yes we both love fish to eat and fish smell soothes our hearts and souls.

Marziya does not get scared of fish, she has touched most of them , and because I grew up among the fisher folks and Tandels of Sassoon Docks at Colaba , my grand daughter takes after me.

Bandra Bazar Fishmarket is the filthiest and ugliest most neglected fish market of Mumbai and I hope when I am dead and gone and Marziya comes here with her children to refresh memories of her dead grand father the condition of the market and the Kolis of this Bazar would have improved hopefully.

I am crying as I write this sometimes when my family was undergoing hard times at Wodehouse Road where we lived as children, our Koli bai would bring in fish and give it to my mother and not take any money from her , I never forgot those days and because this one Koli woman changed my life and the way I see and shoot Life today.

I now am happy that Marziya too feels love for them.

But does it matter whether I am a Muslim or Manjula my adopted sister is Koli.. we are Mumbaikars.. and that joins us to our cosmic Karma and Dharma too.

Khichda, a Muslim dish supposedly a pain to cook it at home , it is not a happiness meal, mostly Khichda is synonomous with Moharam the Iranians Mumbaikars the Shias actually place it as a dish that is always there after a majlis.

On Ashura 10th day of Imam Hussains Martyrdom Khichda is served after Fakke Shikani, a fast unlike the Roza ..the Roza is a happy times fast .Fakke shikani is an enforced fast .

This is Khichda sold at Rs 5 / a plate actually a saucer , it is steaming hot , the guy adds a bit of corriander leaves some ghee droplets for taste,it is pungent , here at Bori Mohalla a predominantly Foodie land .This Khichda is made from mixed cereals and chunks of soft veal .

At Bandra where I stay they have a chicken variety a mutton vaiety sold at Jeff Caterers.

Khichda served on Ashura at Moghul Masjid or Fatawat Imambada is totally out of the World...

Prepared normally by Muslims, I have posted this in response to a request by a friend. From a website - I copied it a while ago. Preparation time and servings approx as this is a recipe I have not made.

Much of my poems happened on my walks in the mornings at the Carter Road Promenade Bandra..

This is an open gutter near my house it has been covered after several tweets pictures and videos ..after tagging our erstwhile local representative ..

The open gutter at Bandra Hill Road opp VR Jewelers , the boss had made several complaints to the BMC but nothing happened I posted a picture and this morning it has been covered too.

There is another one I saw at Bandra Bazar Road Hanuman Temple but I have no inclination to shoot it and why should I fight for Bandra residents with smart kids o Facebook Twitter who are not interested even if a neighbors house comes crashing down or burns down.. We Mumbaikars are selflessly selfish.. as long as nothing happens to our house .. that is why the Bandra Municipality does not give a shit ,,

At a back lane in Bandra Bazar Road Gulati Building there is no water for weeks they take drinking water from street taps and the adjacent buildings but our Congress Corrporator has no time for such exigencies .,,

I feel Mumbai Municipality should be privatized and there will be some accountability responsibility , better roads and better garbage management ,, people who will love Mumbai and not destroy Mumbai wantonly by bribes , allowing slums to come up all over Bandra Reclamation beneath the flyover too ,, new shanties new hutments ,, money goes a long way in making a few corrupt officials look the other way including our cops ,,

I say build statues in the sea build memorials for our stalwart leaders they deserve it but please also build good roads , good Municipal hospitals markets parks schools ,, dont rip us please ,, Luckily we dont belong to Muslim parties as such and we certainly dont live in a polarized Aurangabad .. In my case my parents are buried in Mumbai soil , and from this very Mumbai soil my children grandchildren were born.

So it hurts me a lot I dont belong to any political party , I have no evil agenda , I am not an activist nor do I belong to any activist group as a senior citizen 62 years old I shoot pictures and show you the crass , the neglect of our beloved city ..

Hardly those who helm Mumbai are from Mumbai .. so we have a better Latur a better Nanded a better Nagpur , a better Pune Nagpur better Nasik but a fucked Mumbai from asshole to eternity .

Ganesha (Sanskrit: गणेश; IAST: Gaṇeśa; About this sound listen (help·info)), also spelled Ganesa or Ganesh, also known as Ganapati (Sanskrit: गणपति; IAST: gaṇapati), Vinayaka (Sanskrit: विनायक; IAST: Vināyaka), and Pillaiyar (Tamil: பிள்ளையார்), is one of the deities best-known and most widely worshipped in the Hindu pantheon.[5] His image is found throughout India and Nepal.[6] Hindu sects worship him regardless of affiliations.[7] Devotion to Ganesha is widely diffused and extends to Jains, Buddhists, and beyond India.[8]

Although he is known by many other attributes, Ganesha's elephant head makes him easy to identify.[9] Ganesha is widely revered as the Remover of Obstacles[10] and more generally as Lord of Beginnings and Lord of Obstacles (Vighnesha (Sanskrit: विघ्नेश; IAST: Vighneśa), Vighneshvara (Sanskrit: विघ्नेश्वर; IAST: Vighneśvara),[11] patron of arts and sciences, and the deva of intellect and wisdom.[12] He is honoured at the beginning of rituals and ceremonies and invoked as Patron of Letters during writing sessions.[13] Several texts relate mythological anecdotes associated with his birth and exploits and explain his distinct iconography.

Ganesha emerged a distinct deity in clearly recognizable form in the 4th and 5th centuries CE, during the Gupta Period, although he inherited traits from Vedic and pre-Vedic precursors.[14] His popularity rose quickly, and he was formally included among the five primary deities of Smartism (a Hindu denomination) in the 9th century. A sect of devotees called the Ganapatya, (Sanskrit: गाणपत्य; IAST: gāṇapatya), who identified Ganesha as the supreme deity, arose during this period.[15] The principal scriptures dedicated to Ganesha are the Ganesha Purana, the Mudgala Purana, and the Ganapati Atharvashirsa.

Ganesha has many other titles and epithets, including Ganapati and Vigneshvara. The Hindu title of respect Shri (Sanskrit: श्री; IAST: śrī; also spelled Sri or Shree) is often added before his name. One popular way Ganesha is worshipped is by chanting a Ganesha Sahasranama, a litany of "a thousand names of Ganesha". Each name in the sahasranama conveys a different meaning and symbolises a different aspect of Ganesha. At least two different versions of the Ganesha Sahasranama exist; one version is drawn from the Ganesha Purana, a Hindu scripture venerating Ganesha.[17]

The name Ganesha is a Sanskrit compound, joining the words gana (Sanskrit: गण; IAST: gaṇa), meaning a group, multitude, or categorical system and isha (Sanskrit: ईश; IAST: īśa), meaning lord or master.[18] The word gaņa when associated with Ganesha is often taken to refer to the gaņas, a troop of semi-divine beings that form part of the retinue of Shiva (IAST: Śiva).[19] The term more generally means a category, class, community, association, or corporation.[20] Some commentators interpret the name "Lord of the Gaņas" to mean "Lord of Hosts" or "Lord of created categories", such as the elements.[21] Ganapati (Sanskrit: गणपति; Tamil: கணபதி; IAST: gaṇapati), a synonym for Ganesha, is a compound composed of gaṇa, meaning "group", and pati, meaning "ruler" or "lord".[20] The Amarakosha,[22] an early Sanskrit lexicon, lists eight synonyms of Ganesha : Vinayaka, Vighnarāja (equivalent to Vignesha), Dvaimātura (one who has two mothers),[23] Gaṇādhipa (equivalent to Ganapati and Ganesha), Ekadanta (one who has one tusk), Heramba, Lambodara (one who has a pot belly, or, literally, one who has a hanging belly), and Gajanana (IAST: gajānana) ; having the face of an elephant).[24]

Vinayaka (Sanskrit: विनायक; Tamil: விநாயகா; IAST: vināyaka) is a common name for Ganesha that appears in the Purāṇas and in Buddhist Tantras.[25] This name is reflected in the naming of the eight famous Ganesha temples in Maharashtra known as the Ashtavinayak (aṣṭavināyaka).[26] The names Vighnesha (Sanskrit: विघ्नेश; IAST: vighneśa) and Vighneshvara (Sanskrit: विघ्नेश्वर; vighneśvara) (Lord of Obstacles)[11] refers to his primary function in Hindu mythology as the master and remover of obstacles (vighna).[27] The widespread name of Ganesha in Thailand is Phra Phikanet or Phra Phikanesuan, both of which are derived from Vara Vighnesha and Vara Vighneshvara respectively, whereas the name Kanet (from Ganesha) is rather rare. In the Kundalini, Ganesha is the presiding deity of 'Mooladhara Chakra" andhence referred to as "Mooladhara Murthy" signifying that he is the Lord to be propitiated at the beginning of any event.

A prominent name for Ganesha in the Tamil language is Pille(பிள்ளை) or Pillaiyar(பிள்ளையார்) (Little Child).[28] A. K. Narain differentiates these terms by saying that pille means a "child" while pillaiyar means a "noble child".[29] He adds that the words pallu(பல்லு), pella, and pell in the Dravidian family of languages signify "tooth or tusk", also "elephant tooth or tusk".[30] Anita Raina Thapan notes that the root word pille in the name Pillaiyar might have originally meant "the young of the elephant", because the Pali word pillaka means "a young elephant".[31]

In the Burmese language, Ganesha is known as Maha Peinne (မဟာပိန္နဲ, pronounced [məhà pèiɴné]), derived from Pali Mahā Wināyaka (မဟာဝိနာယက

Life runs in Mumbai. And 'BEST' helps it run. Even before the morning rays hit Mumbai's bosom, BEST is up and running. I remember the time when I had to rush to Pune early on Monday mornings. My journey started on a BEST. The rhythm of the bus (well, its noise for outsiders but its rhythm for Mumbaikars) started a wonderful work week...

I am a Gujarati, Pareliya Soni. Life is great. I have a daughter and a son. Daughter is happily married and she too has a son and a daughter.

It is my thankfulness to God that i'm reaching the last stage of my life (i am 88 years old) and my hands and legs are fine, children are happy

We must have sown some good deeds to reap these fruits.

It is our wish to let our life pass nicely and todays generation should imbibe something from us the seniors.

I start a new gallery, as I hate to let my pictures of the Moghul Masjid live on my website, without a permanent exclusive photo abode.

I love the Moghul Masjid, a Mosque that is the URL address of God on Earth.

He is here in his omnipresent supremacy.

Late Mohomed Hussain Shirazi the man who along with his Lucknow wife gave the Mumbaikars , Shias a place that is a spiritual oasis.

It is a Iranian Mosque no doubt, made for the Iranian migrants, bakery owners , restaurateurs , a place in the hustle bustle of a street life almost touching Bhendi Bazar on one end..

Aziz Bhai is the caretaker of this awesome Mosque, he takes care of the Mosque , sees the day to day welfare of this grand place.

Than there is Bangi saab, who with his fancy rings , has fingers that look like mine, it would be tough dressing up like me..

This is my pictorial tribute to Moghul Masjid a boast to the spirit of a Mumbaikar ethos..

This is a spiritual safe haven for all those who sit by the fountain on the benches watching the fishes cavort , mutually coexist in the water, romping , and thereby teaching us a lesson to live in Peace and Mutual Coexistence.,

I was telling a Mr Sami Sidikki , a producer, just this evening that Muslims love killing Muslims , will never come under a single banner of Islam.

They live sectarian lives and die sectarian deaths.

The only time they come together, is during riots where they are collectively butchered, or when they are bombed in trains than the blood of a Hindu and a Muslim finally gets united in an unforgettable color of Indianness.,

Allah ho Akbar and the Vande Matram….lying side by side .,

Yes sometimes Terrorism unites makes us strange bed partners, even with whom we had a difference of religious opinion.

Terrorism is a cancerous disease, I give it a simplistic name I call it Yazidiyat..it has a religion , a religion of sheer Hate for Man Mankind and the God who made us all.

On the other hand Hussainiyat is not just Shia property, Hussain belongs to all, he is a singular name for Humanity.

I think the most important agenda is not only Hijab, and other marital or post marital controversies that plague our Islamic community.

We have to unite this should be overtly done from the minarets..of all Muslim sects.

Let each one follow his sect but let us as Muslims be under a singe Umbrella.. of a singular God. A single banner..

I AM NOT AN ORATOR, ABSOLUTELY LACKING IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF RELIGIOUS DOGMAS; I SPEAK A SIMPLE LANGUAGE OF HUMAN LOVE…

He sells coriander leaves , hara dhaniya at the Bandra Bazar and hardly talks to anyone , he is a disheartened man a very lonely man..when it rains heavily he covers himself with his umbrella.

I have been observing him for several years without stalking him ,once he has sold all his stuff , he comes to De Monte Street and has his frugal meal and goes to sleep outside a shop with downed shutters ,, I have shot him in this position too.

I feel sad for him , thousands of miles away from his hometown in Uttar Pradesh he came to Bandra to chase his dreams ..he is not very friendly , hates making conversation so I have only few words relationship with him I buy the coriander from him for my Java sparrows ...

Does he miss his family or have the abandoned him ..and when I saw him sitting like this I could not resist taking this pensive shot ,, a shot that tells so much of his lifes struggle , his penury , he is not doing well in life but I think he has firmly decided he will not beg..

When Hon Akhilesh Yadav invites all the Bollywood Bigwigs for his glamour and glitzy show in Saifai .. will he ever have time to think of the people of his State enslaved in Mumbai.. doing menial jobs ,,jobs that the Marathi Manoos will never do.. the Marathi Manoos with due respect wants to be in the Police Income Tax Sale Tax ..so the void is being filled by the North Indian migrant , he is the wheels that moves Mumbai.

His contribution to the growth progress of Mumbai as a commercial hub cannot be ignored .. his services in every domestic field a necessity ..

Many of these Migrants colloquially sometimes even derogatorily are called Bhaiyyas ,, they are spread out as laudry men , washing clothes , ironing clothes , vegetable sellers , bhangarwalas ,you will find a lot of them in MTNL once they were linesmen now they dabble with Internet wires ..at street corners ..

They sell fish that they buy from Bhaucha Dhakka , operate on a mobile phone , they sell newspapers , once Parsi Dairy farm had Bhaiyyas in their blue shirts working out from their office at Marine Lines ,,

Tailors , embroidery workers , carpenters , fruitsellers , are mostly from UP and the hordes of beggars that come from North India trying their luck out in the streets of Mumbai.

The Government of Uttar Pradesh has never done anything for the people of their State working as migrants in a heartless city like Mumbai ,, happy to have got rid of them..

Than I say a silent prayer for my Dad Mohomed Shakir who ran away from Lucknow at the age of 15 .. living in the slums of Kurla he gave us a Hope .. he made sure we would never have to return to Lucknow ,, He made us Pucca Mumbaikars and he so loved Mumbai that he is buried besides my mother in the beloved soil of Mumbai ..at Rehmatabad Shia cemetery Mazgaon.

''गर्व आहे मला, मी मराठी असल्याचा''.. yes this soil this air we breathe made us Mee Marathi too.
