A mini survival kit is a small survival kit which consists of the most essential outdoor survival tools and supplies which are the hardest to improvise or replace. A mini survival kit is intended to be carried along all the time and is usually designed to complement other survival tools carried along in a larger, separate bag. These kits may be referred to as BOATs, or Bug-Out Altoids Tins.[1]

Many items included in such a kit are difficult if not impossible to manufacture or obtain in real world survival situations. A mini survival kit is intended to remain on ones person always, be appropriate to all environments, and be a comprehensive kit without being too large. Other personal gear will primarily offer additional serviceability and ease of use, but the mini survival kit should provide for the basic needs of a survival situation, followed by self rescue, assistance, or a return to normalcy in optimum situations.

Two philosophies surround the preparation of mini survival kits. Some people like to carry a few, relatively large items such as a knife, box of matches, whistle, energy food, bottle of water, etc. Others prefer a collection of smaller but more comprehensive items such as rubber bands, paper clips, fishing equipment, lashing material, razor blades, etc. The decision of which technique to subscribe to depends on one's environment, physical condition, survival knowledge, and other factors.

The contents of this one are:

Close-up of Whisper's web gear, which consists of the Playhouse combat suspenders from the CJSOTF-A figure, a Sideshow black MOLLE belt, and a custom-made rappelling harness done with nylon webbing and Fabri-tac. I'll have to try to do one with the sewing machine soon.

Pouches and other gear are from an assortment of places, mostly Soldier Story but the Mk23 pistol is from DML, and the diver's knife is Toys City. The multitool is probably TTL.

A pretty rare and cool SOG multi-tool.

A few years ago, I was a member of an IPT (Integrated Project Team) organized by the U.S. Navy, charged with shock testing testing a huge amount of equipment, some of which was manufactured by my employer at the time. A significant part of this effort was spending an entire January at an (outdoors) barge test site near Charlottesville Virginia, representing my employer, and assisting with the physical aspects of the testing. After a day or two on-site, I saw the utility in having a multitool handy, and bought this Leatherman at the Lowe's in Charlottesville.

I used it continuously that month, and have since carried it on other qualification test and developmental activities. I also carry it when I'm working on cars or doing other tinkering on the weekends, and it is in my messenger bag when I'm in the office. In its belt sheath, it is less obtrusive and can be more useful than a cell phone.

The knifeblade itself is pathetic- half serrated and half not, neither half has stayed sharp or is easily sharpened, so when I need to actually cut something I always reach in my pocket for my knife rather than go to the sheath for the Leatherman.

Adapting to what you need at any particular moment is a quality of any solid EDC. But EDC isn't just about what you carry, it's about how you do it too, and finding a similar level of adaptability in a single bag that's still suitable for daily carry is a tall order. It doesn't hurt to be prepared. This is my EDC featuring Maxpedition Compact Admin Pouch as the main container that I carry everyday to work, hanging out with friends or on my travel.

Some items listed below will change from time to time depending on my needs, but the basic tier remain the same i.e the very essential power brick to charge your phone or other devices.

Watching Trey Ratcliff's Google Hangout, I felt like joining in. This is how my camera bag is set up for going to my wife's cousin's wedding. But it turns out that the "What's in your bag?" game is played a little different when you have a baby/toddler along. This is actually quite similar to the usual Saturday outing.
