Raul Mourão is an activist of the city, his work as an artist consistently reflects his concerns and indignation about it’s state and it’s future. An installation of his kinetic sculptures at Tiradentes Square is paralleled with an exhibition at Studio-X highlighting some fragments from his studio in order to help reveal more about his motivations and working process.

Security fences which were voraciously multiplied throughout Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian cities during the 90’s are presented through an extensive photographic catalog, documented by the artist throughout the years, as well as sculptures which resulted from his keen observations.

The exhibition also displays small scale models of the sculptures currently installed at the square as well as documentation of his previous large-scale kinetic sculptures through interview extracts, videos recorded from his computer screen, and presentation books of his projects. Thus, an attempt is made to provide an understanding of the development of his work which lead to the installation at Tiradentes Square, its relationship with the body and with urban space.
