Warner Theatre, 147 High Street, Morgantown, West Virginia. The Warner Theater is a historic Art Deco movie theater. Opened June 12, 1931, it was designed by architect John Eberson, whose theaters included the since-demolished Colonial and Astor in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Calvert in Washington, D.C., and the Capitol in Chicago, Illinois; and the extant Cinema le Grand Rex in Paris, France, the Capitol in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, the Dixie in Staunton, Virginia, and the American in The Bronx, New York City. Built at a cost of $400,000, it featured a 50-foot vertical marquee illuminated with over 6,000 light bulbs of different colors, although the vertical marquee has since been removed, and many of the original light bulbs on the rest of the marquee were replaced with neon strips.

The Round Table Corporation purchased the theater in 2004 with the intention of restoring it to its original condition, though the originally single-screen theater already became a multiplex in the early 1970s. After 79 years of business, The Warner Theater remains intact but closed its doors on September 5, 2010.

The wooden multiplex shelf-unit houses all the ornaments, and keeps the mattresses upright during the day-time.

Camoflauge, 1987

Four from a portfolio of eight screenprints, composition (each): 38 x 38" (96.5 x 96.5 cm)

Andy Warhol, American, 1928-1987

Printmaking, and in particular screenprint, was the basic medium for Andy Warhol's celebrated work on canvas and paper. While a prize-winning commercial artist in the 1950s, he devised a printing process of blotting outline drawings in ink from one surface to another.

Warhol did not participate in the collaborative printshop system established in America in the 1960s, but his work contributed decisively to what has been characterized as a "print boom" at that time. Through the course of his career, he made nearly eight hundred printed images on paper, about half published in traditional editions. He was also a surprisingly experimental printmaker, issuing hundreds of trial proofs and unique variants. The compositions that make up Camouflage, his last portfolio, constitute a playful commentary on abstraction. Through manipulation of scale and color from sheet to sheet, Warhol alters the visual impact of the military fabric used for concealment. In examples on canvas, he also superimposes his face, linking self-portraiture with disguise.

Andy Warhol's Camoflauge was on display in the special exhibition, Multiplex: Directions in Art, 1970 to Now from November 21, 2007

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) was founded in 1929 and is often recognized as the most influential museum of modern art in the world. Over the course of the next ten years, the Museum moved three times into progressively larger temporary quarters, and in 1939 finally opened the doors of its midtown home, located on 53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in midtown.

MoMA's holdings include more than 150,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, architectural models and drawings, and design objects. Highlights of the collection inlcude Vincent Van Gogh's The Starry Night, Salvador Dali's The Persisence of Memory, Pablo Picasso's Les Demoiseels d'Avignon and Three Musicians, Claude Monet's Water Lilies, Piet Mondrian's Broadway Boogie Woogie, Paul Gauguin's The Seed of the Areoi, Henri Matisse's Dance, Marc Chagall's I and the Village, Paul Cezanne's The Bather, Jackson Pollack's Number 31, 1950, and Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans. MoMA also owns approximately 22,000 films and four million film stills, and MoMA's Library and Archives, the premier research facilities of their kind in the world, hold over 300,000 books, artist books, and periodicals, and extensive individual files on more than 70,000 artists.

POV: FIRST CONTACT Bold-Stroked...

SO: you're in a theater, 40 minutes into, say, a 'romantic comedy'...

SUDDENLY: PALEOLITHIC cave painters appear on screen @ work on the most breathtaking mural ever seen...no explanation...an ineffable gravitas, a virtually palpable sense of history alive, including even (widely reported) the scent of smoke and human sweat...

FOR 12 INEXPLICABLE MINUTES...speaking in a language never heard by modern humanity, one artist even apparently making a joke that elicits loud collective laughter echoing through invisible chambers of an unknown cave (the location soon after discovered, further removing the prospect of a grand hoax & emphasizing a non-human intelligence behind it)

...SOME of the (unknowingly global) audience is intrigued and even mesmerized, others, after a minute or two, irritated, descend across time-zones (but mostly PST, West Coast U.S) to multiplex lobbies to complain, demand an explanation, what'-s-this-TRAILER doing interrupting what-I-Paid-To-SEE, etc...

WELL who knew? it's FIRST CONTACT

...but nothing follows for weeks

...as the world rocks in the vast roll

of a wholly unforeseen See Change...

FIRST CONTACT: THE INAUGURAL GLOBAL SCREEN-HACK

A flawless "capture" of cave painters, clearly speaking a language never written, heard or imagined by modern humanity. Faces torchlit, concentration intense, momentarily broken: echos roll from a brief gale of laughter seemingly in response to something the wide-eyed youngest of the four says. A female voice is heard approaching, with another torch-bearing male, a girl and boy, appearing around 9 and 12 years old.

They have charcoal, feathers, moss in hand. The eldest, maybe mid-forties, inhales deeply, then exhales, as if releasing himself through the sidelong downstroke he stretched for, stubbled-feather brush clotted with pigment, the glistening flank of a larger-than-life bison stands suddenly clear, every stroke audible over the stone, you can hear the soft but distinct huff & puff of the woman's breath blowing soot through a reed into an outline of the girl's hand held to the cave wall. She whispers something in her ear, the girl grins. Then the boy's hand is placed. In theaters everywhere many swear to "experiencing" a smell of bittersweet smoke.

This Scene, both digitally and in film-stock, inexplicably "embeds" in the copy of whatever movie it interrupted, as if it belonged there, allowing endless analysis in the weeks and months that follow, as well as the record uber-viral multi-billion online view count by midweek.

The day after First Contact--Easter Sunday (Christian speculation is especially tweaked, urgent & "confused") near-invisible & barely legible in the palm of a hand print, as if scratched there: what turns out to be GPS coordinates.

These are followed to an undiscovered cave in an unlikely location, three magnificent 'chambers', full of the most accomplished and oldest paleolithic art ever seen.

Dated at 44,000+ years old, computer analysis verifies that every stroke that glistened "live" onscreen in the A.A "OverRide" exactly matches the faded, long-dried pigment of the end result, just now discovered all these ages later, hence further dramatizing the non-human origin of what a now-forever-altered world recently witnessed--

demonstrating why ALIEN ANONYMOUS chose this medium, founded in Hollywood, now, conveniently enough for their undisclosed purpose, among modern humanity's favorite pastimes.

Lines so long have never been seen before this, for anything playing. Because word is out--things are "happening" to people who sat through that first 12 minutes, who witnessed history made.

Forest Cinema, Walthamstow. Opened as the Empire in November 2014, this was the first purpose built complex for the circuit, previous sites having been take-overs. It was designed by Pollard, Thomas, Edwards Architects, who also designed the rest of 'The Scene' building. It has 9 screens, including an Impact Screen, and a large 309 seat auditorium (Screen 9) with a vast curved screen. The Empire circuit went into administration in 2023, and the multiplex was closed and became badly vandalised before a new operator (PD Management Ltd) was found. It reopened as the Forest Cinema in September 2024 and has proved very successful. Two screens are current closed awaiting repair, fittings having had to be reused to repair damage in other areas before opening.

The double bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis f. multiplex) is a rare thing. The plants sold in general commerce all come from one plant found, according to an account in Linc and Laura Foster's classic book Cuttings From A Rock Garden , in the spring of 1917 in a woods in Dayton, Ohio. Mr. von Webern who had purchased the woods and found the double bloodroot, fortunately sent out a couple of the plants; the original colony apparently eventually died out, but he had sent one plant to the Montreal Botanical Garden, which in turn distributed it into commerce. A few other double flowered bloodroot plants have since been found; in the southeast and perhaps in New England, as well as a pink flowered single. I don't know if any of the other doubles found have had as many extra petals as Mr. von Webern's plant. The doubles are very expensive, because they don't set seed so must (slowly) be propagated vegetatively. However, the $75 price I see charged by a certain well-known nursery is ridiculous.

Using two 4051 multiplexer ICs I am able to simulate the electric typewriter's keyboard matrix and can control the entire functionality of this machine via the Arduino board.

This example shows the result of a tool that tries to recreate an image with the available letters on the daisy wheel. It types several layers of type over each other and also uses half-letter spacing and half-line feeds to cover more paper with carbon. The principle of this is demonstrated here: incubator.quasimondo.com/DarwinCss.html

Compte rendu : phototrend.fr/2014/12/compte-rendu-de-la-premiere-sortie-...

In the woodland garden at RHS Harlow Carr

The Guzzo des Sources 10 cinema in the les Galeries des Sources shopping centre opened in the summer of 1998.

It was the first movie theatre with some screens with stadium seating that I had ever visited, opening a year before the Famous Players Paramount (now le Cinema Banque-Scotia) in downtown Montreal, a year-and-a-half before the Famous Players Colisée in Kirkland, and a whole three years before the AMC Forum 22 multiplex in the Pepsi Forum.

It's a nice multiplex, as far as multiplexes go, but I didn't go to it that often because it was a pain-in-the-butt to get there from Sainte Anne de Bellevue by bus, as bus service up and down Sources Boulevard was very intermittent, especially in the evening. The last movie I remember seeing there was Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones, and I only saw it there because I was tagging along with one of my brother's friends who had a car.

Cinémas Guzzo is the largest independent movie theatre chain in the province of Quebec. It was founded by Angelo Guzzo, and Italian immigrant, who began his career buying up and renovating older theatres in the 1970's, and who started opening modern, state-of-the-art multiplexes under his own in the Montreal area in 1990. From what I remember reading about his business strategy, he prefers to stay out of downtown Montreal entirely, letting Famous Players/Cineplex Odeon, and AMC duke it out there, and focuses his attention on the suburbs, as well as smaller urban centres outside of Montreal.

I actually had a drop-in mass job interview at this location before it opened in 1998, but I didn't have much of a chance, because I had no job experience, my French left much to be desired, and, at the time, I used a superdeformed picture of Kiyone from the Japanese anime series Tenchi Universe as a mascot/icon on my CV to distinguish myself as a fun-loving guy, but it probably didn't look at all professional of me. I did get to meet Mr. Guzzo's son, Vincenzo Guzzo, who is executive vice-president of the chain, as he was conducting the mini-job-interviews. It's hard for me to remember a five-minute chat from 10 years ago, but he seemed cordial.

One reason why the Guzzos are especially cool in my book is that they are what I hope to be at some point in the future, should my art career ever take off to the point where this could be feasible: they are big-time Ferrari collectors, and I mean the real thing, not just scale models like I have. I think Angelo Guzzo even has a couple of actual Ferrari F1 cars. I'm 99% sure that he has one Ferrari F1 car formerly driven by Gilles Villeneuve, and I think he probably has another one that had been driven by Michael Schumacher.

I remember seeing a Cinémas Guzzo billboard at le Circuit Mont Tremblant during last year's Ferrari F430 Challenge race.
