The ExtraSchicht - Industrial heritage in action
An event as extraordinary and multifaceted as the Ruhrgebiet itself. The ExtraSchicht has been a cult event for a long time now and this year it will be the meeting-place for people from all over the world. The Night of Industrial Heritage will be taking place on the 17th June for the sixth time, in 38 venues in 19 different towns and cities in the area. From six in the evening to two o’clock the next morning collieries and coking plants, mining tips and blast furnaces, engine houses and blast furnace houses will be swathed in a dreamlike light for a series of extraordinary artistic experiments and shows. Regional, national and international musicians, dancers, artists, and magicians will be opening up a cultural kaleidoscope in the old industrial plants in the region.
ExtraSchicht is the largest cultural event in North-Rhine Westphalia during the World Cup. Dortmund and Gelsenkirchen are not only World Cup venues, they are also ExtraSchicht venues. It goes without saying that sport is also included in the ExtraSchicht programme. And here’s a particularly useful fact: on the ExtraSchicht day there are no World Cup games being held in the Ruhrgebiet – football fans can relax and join in!

International development programs often tackle the world’s most complex problems by sector, but this fragmentation rarely considers the interconnectedness that determines success or the multifaceted people these programs target. Experience tells us that such a “siloed” approach has limitations and can yield unintended negative consequences.
Integrated programs hold promise for delivering better development programming, and as a result, nuanced, sustainable results for people in cycles of poverty. But how can we recognize their impact? How do we research and measure something broad, diverse, and heterogeneous?
Join us for a discussion led by a variety of international development stakeholders – donors, implementers, and academia – about specific needs, challenges, and opportunities for strengthening the evidence base for integrated development approaches.
This event is co-sponsored by Locus, a coalition of organizations dedicated to advancing evidence-based solutions to global development challenges that are integrated, driven by local communities, and based on shared measures.

"Red Line" is a collaborative multifaceted dance performance conceived and directed by Assistant Professor of Dance Iddi Saaka as part of his fellowship with Wesleyan University’s Embodying Antiracism Initiative. The work draws on the experiences of five scholar-artist collaborators to interrogate how a place of origin can open opportunities for some but close doors to others.
These photos are from a dress rehearsal of the work on Saturday, February 18, 2023 featuring Alycia Bright-Holland, Kwamena Blankson, Issa Coulibaly, Venlo Odom, Center for Prison Education Fellow Shirley Sullivan '21, and Iddi Saaka in the Cross Street Dance Studio in Middletown. Speculating on the multifaceted nature of words and translation studies, artist Deniz Gül is interested in spoken and written language as an art form. “How is language practiced? How to monitor the involvement and effects of words in periods of economic, ecological, and social crisis?” In her exhibition “Scratch and Surface” she gives priority to sharing her interest in these questions with the visitors while aiming to develop new perspectives on established familiar relations with language. The second exhibition of “The Sequential” program, “Scratch and Surface” is presented across three floors of SALT Galata and online.

Described as “a mesmerizing exploration of failure, resilience, and profound, multifaceted loss” (Kirkus), the Strega Prize-winning novel Ferocity by acclaimed writer and editor Nicola Lagioia made its debut in English this October from Europa Editions. The complex story of a brother seeking to get to the bottom of his sister's death, Ferocity is a mix of noir, gothic horror story and family saga set in Lagioia's native Puglia.
In her correspondence with Lagioia, catalogued in Frantumaglia: A Writer's Journey, Elena Ferrante described reading Ferocity with “great enthusiasm,” finding on each page “confirmation of your great, truthful passion for literature.”
Lagioia discussed this ambitious and vivid work of fiction with Michael Reynolds, editor-in-chief of Europa Editions.
