SPERRY 36-INCH NAVY SEARCHLIGHT SERIAL NUMBER 1529

The largest of three standard searchlight sizes used on U.S. Naval ships during World War II.

Since the late 19th century searchlights have been an important multiuse tool for naval crews. They have been used to detect enemy ships, assist landing parties, aid search and rescue, as signaling devices, and to dazzle, or confuse, attacking enemies. Indeed, one of the earliest naval applications of searchlights occurred in 1882 when the Royal Navy used searchlights to dazzle Egyptian gun crews defending Alexandria.

During the Russo-Japanese War, World War I, and World War II searchlights were used to detect, track, and engage enemy ships during nighttime naval battles. In particular, the Japanese Navy developed tactics and training that proved quite effective during nighttime naval engagements early in World War II.

As the war progressed radar emerged as a far more effective way to locate and track enemy ships with the added benefit of not giving a vessel's location away. However, searchlights still proved highly versatile with novel uses being implemented during the Battles of Midway and the Philippine Sea where searchlights were used as nighttime beacons to guide aircrews back to their aircraft carriers. Due to their varied utility, the Navy still installs searchlights on most modern vessels.

The 36-inch searchlight displayed here is a standard navy type, utilizing a carbon arc lamp and a parabolic mirror. Carbon arc lamps work by creating an electric arc between two carbon rods, or electrodes. This arc creates an intense, steady, and highly luminous light which is focused and projected into a narrow beam by the backing parabolic mirror. The diameter of this beam is controlled by an iris shutter. Large searchlights, such as this 36-inch light, could be controlled manually or remotely, and were predominantly used for nighttime combat. They did not have shutters for signaling. Signaling was conducted by smaller 12- and 24-inch general-purpose searchlights.

The Cataraqui Trail, a 104 km multi-use rail trail is on the left (stop sign is for snowmobilers) and passes across the front ot the parked vehicles to enter the trees in the shaded area. Foodland grocery store is just off the photo on the left, Bedford Road is on the right, becoming George Street as it curves to the left and crosses the Trail. Walker Road, where my wife can be seen in the distance, is on the same alignment as Bedford Road. The Beer Store is 150 m behind the camera. View is towards the southwest.

Liam just returned last week from seven months in Zambia, Africa. He was living in Livingstone volunteering lending his business acumen -- as a fourth-year university student at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria -- to local goat ranchers.

After visiting Victoria Falls (9 miles from Livingstone) on no less than three occasions, he was not overwhelmed by viewing Waugh Creek Falls. ;-)

Sunday we walked 2½km roundtrip along the E&N railway tracks from Humpback Road xing southbound to the 10MP marker. After guesstimating the Humpback xing was located at the 10¾ mile location the only way to find out was to locate the 10 miles post; this we did and have a picture-to-prove-it.

We noticed the nearby powerline trail is in pretty good condition for cycling. Southbound it's a only a short distance before arriving at WestHills Subdivision and Langford Parkway but it would be fun to ride it anyway.

We were surprised to see how close the Goldstream subdivisions -- like Kettle Creek Subdivision -- are to Westhills, Langford Lake and Irwin Park. Once all the new construction in these areas is completed it is going to one heckuva fine neighbourhood to live in; especially, for those who like to get out and walk or cycle close to where they live.

I took these back in November of last year. It is always amazing to find these abandoned places. The wikipedia article on Desert Center is interesting to read.

The school district has only 13 kids, so they are all at the 'newer' school, Eagle Mountain. That school is right by the abandoned Kaiser mining town, Eagle Mountain.

I think they thought that the school would get other use. Still there are two pianos, the typewriter, the cabinets and all those chairs. I can only imagine that it would host town meetings in that multiuse room with a stage.

There is always a sense of something at abandoned buildings it feels like a spirit of surprise. No one intended to abandon this when they built it, and when the building is finally abandoned, it seems to always still be a bit of a surprise and disbelievable. So much so that there are always things left behind that confirm the lack of a belief that this is the end.

One of my favorite things about this store is the fact that it's multiuse—you can buy a couple turtles, a frog, a bag of goldifsh for your pet snake, and still pick up flowers for your girlfriend. One stop shop.

Funding is in place for a multiuse bicycle/walking trail from 890 Columbia Drive to the Avondale MARTA station. EDG is collaborating with the PATH Foundation on this project, which has completed a survey and engineering plans. Other community partners include Columbia Ventures, City of Decatur, DeKalb County, and East Decatur Station.

Taken along the multiuse path along Transmountain Road. Until stricter orders went out, it was a great place to walk and socially distance because the path is loud and shadeless.

Just taken this evening at the end of the day, magical light!

Thursday morning Liam and I walked 6km roundtrip along The Great Trail from Humpback Reservoir to Niagara Main CRD Service Road.

The service road is just 100 metres beyond the Goldstream Suspension Bridge.

What a great day to walk the great trail

Afterward, we had lunch at Ma Miller's Pub in Goldstream Village.

We were certainly surprised to see that Humpback Road between Goldstream and Humpback Reservoir is now gated.

Everyone now has to use the new Westhills/Goldstream connector whether they want to or not.

Bigs thanks to our 21 year old grandson for his patience and scintillating conversation while hiking with this octogenarian.

Suburban Down Town street scape with office and retail. Housing and commercial density make area more livable but wide suburban arterials make walking less than comfortable.

Sunday we walked 5km roundtrip along the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Rail Trail from Hallowell Road northwest to Helmcken Road. The plan was to walk northbound along the trail to see how work is progressing at Dunsmuir's Cut at the Four Mile railway bridge.

Work is proceeding at an exponential rate since we were there two-weeks ago. What a fine job of engineering and workmanship the contractor is producing in the course of completing this 10-mile (16km) long, multi-use trail beside the E&N railway tracks.

It was another beautiful, spring-like day in Victoria at a sunny, 11°C (52°F). We topped our outing off with lunch at the Four-Mile Pub (with pictures-to-prove-it).
