Photographer Michael Brennan’s iconic portrait of Muhammad Ali, “1977,” is a picture of an instant: 1/125th of a second to be precise. "I had attempted this picture on numerous previous occasions, with no success,” Brennan recalls. His patience ultimately paid off. Somehow, in mid-September of 1977, as Ali prepared for his upcoming match with Earnie Shavers the fighter revealed himself to Brennan’s camera, and the result became not only a famous portrait in its own right, but also the most important portrait of Muhammad Ali ever taken. In an instant, the qualities that made Ali an icon -- to boxing fans and to African Americans – were immortalized by a single snap of Brennan’s lens. Muhammad Ali’s famous determination and self-assurance are all there, shining through his handsome features.

“I don't have to be what you want me to be,” Ali once stated, “I'm free to be what I want.” Michael Brennan’s epic photographic portrait echoes that sense of fierce independence. The portrait is important for the same reason that Muhammad Ali legacy is important: it tells us something about the strivings of all men for dignity. An example of the “1977” Portrait of Muhammad Ali is housed in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery - Smithsonian Institute.

Step 4 - Have a harebrained idea about taking this piece next level by having it as three murals in one and then proceed to attempt to make this idea a reality. Constantly question whether it will work or just be an immense waste of your time. Add some detail to the hair area then try to take some classy shots. This could be as good as it gets. Really go for it and include the cat if you can and any other arty shots you can manage.

Muhammad al-Kahki, Sheikh of the Mosque of Sulayman Pasha. His tomstone, which is modern, lists his death as AH10 (or 631/2 CE) which does not align with either the dates of the tomb (16th cent), or the Mosque, built in 1528.

The Torch, a mural by DC-based artist Aniekan Udofia, was painted on the side of Ben's Chili Bowl, at 1213 U Street, NW, in 2017. Like the original mural it replaced, also by Udofia, this new wall honors various heroes and influences of Black history--starting with Harriet Tubman leading the way, torch in hand for (R-L) President Barack and Michelle Obama, Prince, Muhammed Ali, Go-Go Legend Chuck Brown, Singer Roberta Flack, Radio Personalities Donnie Simpson & Russ Parr, Actress Taraji P. Henson, Rapper Wale, Journalist Jim Vance, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, Former DC Mayor Marion Barry and Comedians Dave Chappelle & Dick Gregory. A year later, in honor of the 60th Anniversary of Ben’s Chili Bowl, two new faces were added--Rev. Jesse Jackson and Urban One Founder Cathy Hughes. Two years later, to honor his retirement, WUSA 9 TV anchorman and reporter Bruce Johnson was added.
