Hussein ibn Ali 626-680, was the grandson of the prophet Muhammad and an Alid (the son of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Muhammad's daughter Fatima), as well as a younger brother of Hasan ibn Ali. Husain is regarded as the third Imam in Shia Islam after his brother, Hasan, and before his son, Ali al-Sajjad. Husain is a prominent member of the Ahl al-Bayt (People of the House, Family of the Prophet) and is also considered to be a member of the Ahl al-Kisa and a participant in the event of the mubahala. Muhammad described him and his brother, and with Hasan, the leaders of the youth of paradise.

Ahl al-Kisa, People of the Cloak, refers to the five members of the prophet Muhammad's family (Prophet Muhammad, his cousin and son-in-law Ali, his daughter Fatima, and his grandsons Hasan and Hussein). This group is significant because of the Hadith al-Kisa (Hadith of the Cloak), where they were gathered under a cloak and declared to be the pure household (Ahl al-Bayt). Shia Muslims claim that this event supports their belief in the special spiritual and political authority of Ali and his descendants.

The mubahala (lit. mutual cursing) was an aborted attempt to resolve a theological dispute between Muslims and Christians in c.632 by invoking the curse of God upon the liars. These debates took place in Medina, between a Christian delegation from Najran, and the prophet Muhammad, who proposed this solution probably when their discourse had reached a deadlock concerning the nature of Jesus, human or divine.
