The company that was used to ship these things from the US to Germany was called International Movers Network and WOW were they incompetent. Just WOW.
In several boxes of the most fragile objects--sculptures, porcelain, crystal, and glass--one can see the objects were just thrown on top of each other, sometimes without even paper. Many things were completely destroyed and a lot more were damaged. Several boxes never arrived at all. It's honestly incredible that any of the glass or porcelain made it at all.
A big old armoire was transported with its wooden legs completely exposed and half of one of its feet was broken off. A copper lamp was also transported without any wrapping at all--the metal is scarred and dented in several places.
Speakers were transported unprotected and with pieces of a cast-iron lamp thrown directly on top of them, tearing their lining. The metal legs of these speakers were wrapped in my mother's hand-appliqued duvet cover, which is now permanently stained with oil and has small holes punched in it by the sharp metal edges.
Most frustrating, my mother's collection of Polish crockery was transported in a large box with her small collection of Inuit soapstone carvings--the STONE art pieces hadn't even been wrapped in paper, forget bubble wrap, but had just been tossed on top of the PORCELAIN! Naturally, as anyone (except apparently a professional moving company) could predict, this smashed a lot of both types of things.
Bizarrely, boxes we had already packed were opened and redistributed. It seems these lunatics opened up taped-up boxes and then REMOVED protective wrappings like bubble wrap. This makes absolutely no sense. Why would professional movers take the time to unpack fragile objects before "repacking" them in a way that guarantees they will break? It was a terrible experience. Of course there was no response to our complaint except that we have to go through their insurance--this had a 500-euro co-pay, and family heirlooms just aren't worth that much. Not even an apology for all this destruction and several boxes lost completely...
