This pin was originally a painting titled Hope and Unity for Barack Obama I had done for MoveOn.org’s art contest back in 2008. The artwork had to reflect the Barack Obama campaign themes of patriotism, hope, and unity. The winning artwork would be put on display at a local Denver art gallery during the Democratic convention and it would’ve been put up for auction (with the proceeds going towards the Obama campaign). Well I did the painting, digitized it, and sent the .jpeg in. I found out that my painting was one of over 1,000 submissions but it wasn’t until later I found out that there was room at the Denver art gallery for only 32 entries and I wasn’t selected. I subsequently displayed this painting at the annual Labor Day Festival Art Show in Greenbelt, Maryland where I overheard some positive reviews for this when I was in the area where the painting was on display. I also displayed it a few months later at the New Deal Cafe, also in Greenbelt, as part of the 2008 Art Walk event.
After the Labor Day Festival Art Show ended, I came up with an idea to turn the painting into a piece of jewelry so I took the .jpeg version, printed it out on special Shrinky Dinks paper, baked it in the oven, placed a necklace loop at the top, and glued a pin backing on it. This item can be worn as either a necklace or a pin.

Congressman Shimkus (R-IL) and the Republicans in Congress put almost 100,000 workers off the job by shutting down Airport Construction Projects funded in the FAA re-authorization bill. The Republican's FAA shutdown cost the taxpayers $400 million in uncollected revenues. Congressman Shimkus has done nothing to create jobs. All he did was vote to gut Medicare for seniors. After dodging the voters all summer, community members rallied to demand that Congressman Shimkus explain his dismal record on jobs and the economy.

I’m posting these photos to commemorate the efforts made four years ago by American citizens to show the U.S. government that its people were against going to war with Iraq. This vigil was sponsored by MoveOn.org, and it took place in Balboa Park in San Diego, California. Sadly, it’s been over four years since then, and so many thousands have died, so many billions have been squandered, and so many people worldwide have been turned off by Americans. But, "It’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness," eh?
