Although most E unit locomotives used at the time by Amtrak were EMD E8s, this Amtrak's Champion that just arrived at the St. Petersburg's Amtrak depot includes an old SCL EMD E7 within the locomotive mix. The E7 is not in the best shape, with some dented and rusted side panels, and it appears that fuel has run down the side of the fuel tank. The car located just behind the locomotives is an SCL dormitory-baggage car in Amtrak service, probably an early SAL car. Courtesy Mike Robbins
Cambodia. Siem Reap. Angkor.
The city lies on the west bank of the Siem Reap River, a tributary of Tonle Sap, about a quarter of a mile from the river. The south gate of Angkor Thom is 7.2 km north of Siem Reap, and 1.7 km north of the entrance to Angkor Wat. The walls, 8 m high and flanked by a moat, are each 3 km long, enclosing an area of 9 km². The walls are of laterite buttressed by earth, with a parapet on the top. There are gates at each of the cardinal points, from which roads lead to the Bayon at the centre of the city. As the Bayon itself has no wall or moat of its own, those of the city are interpreted by archaeologists as representing the mountains and oceans surrounding the Bayon's Mount Meru. Another gate—the Victory Gate—is 500 m north of the east gate; the Victory Way runs parallel to the east road to the Victory Square and the Royal Palace north of the Bayon.
The faces on the 23 m towers at the city gates, which are later additions to the main structure, take after those of the Bayon and pose the same problems of interpretation. They may represent the king himself, the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, guardians of the empire's cardinal points, or some combination of these. A causeway spans the moat in front of each tower: these have a row of devas on the left and asuras on the right, each row holding a naga in the attitude of a tug-of-war. This appears to be a reference to the myth, popular in Angkor, of the Churning of the Sea of Milk. The temple-mountain of the Bayon, or perhaps the gate itself, would then be the pivot around which the churning takes place. The nagas may also represent the transition from the world of men to the world of the gods (the Bayon), or be guardian figures. The gateways themselves are 3.5 by 7 m, and would originally have been closed with wooden doors. The south gate is now by far the most often visited, as it is the main entrance to the city for tourists.

Among all the earth buildings, Zhencheng Building is the most magnificent. With the combination of various round buildings into one, it is regarded as a miraculous wonder by thousands of experts, scholars and tourists who have been enchanted by its beauty.
Built in 1912, at the cost of 80,000 silver dollars, the overall design of the building is a combination of the traditional style of local residential buildings and that of typical Beijing and Western architecture.
Central hall of Zhencheng Building
The main building is composed of an inside round building, an outside round building and a central hall. The outside ring has four stories, which are divided into eight components according to China’s traditional Eight Diagrams (八卦), with each diagram forming a separate courtyard. Various courtyards are connected by corridors, but each diagram is separated by a fire wall.
On both sides of the main building, there are two two-storied houses in the shape of a crescent. One was used as a school and the other was resided by odd-job men. The overall external shape of the building looks like a black gauze cap (乌纱帽) worn by feudal officials in ancient times, which implies that the owner hoped that his offspring could be so remarkable as to become officials.
The Consolidated PBY Catalina is a Flying Boat and Amphibious Aircraft that was produced in the 1930's and 1940's, in Canadian service it was known as the 'Canso' and was one of the most widely used Seaplanes of World War Two. Catalinas served with every branch of the United States Armed Forces and in the Air Forces and Navy's of many other nations. The last Military PBY's served until the 1980's. As of 2021, 86 years after its first flight, the Aircraft continues to fly as a 'Waterbomber' (or Airtanker) in Aerial Firefighting Operations in some parts of the world. The PBY Catalina was originally designed to be a 'Patrol Bomber' an Aircraft with a long Operational Range intended to Locate and Attack Enemy Transport Ships at sea in order to disrupt Enemy Supply Lines. With a mind to a potential Conflict in the Pacific Ocean, where Troops would require Resupply over great distances, the U.S. Navy in the 1930's invested millions of dollars in developing Long-Range Flying Boats for this purpose. Flying Boats had the advantage of not requiring Runways, in effect having the entire ocean available.
The PBY Catalina was the most numerous Aircraft of its kind, with around 3,300 Aircraft being built during World War Two, PBY Catalina's were used in Anti-Submarine Warfare, Patrol Bombing, Convoy Escort, Search and Rescue Missions (especially Air-Sea Rescue) and Cargo Transport.
The type operated in nearly all Operational Theatres of World War Two, the PBY Catalina served with distinction and played a prominent and invaluable role in the war against the Japanese. These Patrol Planes shared with Land Based Patrol Bombers the Combat Roles while the very Long Range Consolidated LB-30 and the Consolidated Coronado were pressed into service to increase the all important Logistic Strategic Air Lift Capability in the vast Pacific Theater. The pairings allowed the PBY Catalina to take on the role of 'Eyes of the Fleets' at longer ranges than the Float Plane Scouts. Several different Flying Boats were adopted by the Navy, but the PBY Catalina was the most widely used and produced. Although slow and ungainly, PBY Catalina's distinguished themselves during World War Two were Allied Forces used them successfully in a wide variety of roles for which the Aircraft was never intended.
PBYs are especially remembered for their 'Rescue Role' in which they saved the lives of thousands of Aircrew downed over water. PBY Catalina Aircrew called their Aircraft the ''Cat'' on Combat Missions and ''Dumbo'' when on Air-Sea Rescue Missions.
The designation "PBY" was determined in accordance with the U.S. Navy Aircraft Designation System of 1922, 'PB' representing "Patrol Bomber" and 'Y' being the code assigned to Consolidated Aircraft as its manufacturer. PBY Catalina's built by other manufacturers for the U.S. Navy were designated according to different manufacturer codes, thus Canadian Vickers-built examples were designated PBV, Boeing Canada examples PB2B (there already being a Boeing PBB) and Naval Aircraft Factory examples were designated PBN. In accordance with contemporary British naming practice of naming Seaplanes after coastal port towns, Royal Canadian Air Force examples were named 'Canso' for the town of that name in Nova Scotia. The Royal Air Force used the name 'Catalina' and the U.S. Navy adopted this name in 1942. The United States Army Air Forces and later the United States Air Force used the designation 'OA-10' U.S. Navy Catalinas used in the Pacific against the Japanese for Night Operations were painted black overall, and as a result of this the Aircraft were sometimes referred to locally as "Black Cats".
The PBY Catalina scored the U.S. Navy's first verifiable Air-to-Air ''kill'' of a Japanese Aircraft in the Pacific War, on 10th December 1941, the Japanese Attacked the Cavite Navy Yard in the Philippines. Numerous U.S. Ships and Submarines were damaged or destroyed by Bombs and Bomb Fragments. While flying to safety during the Raid on Cavite, Lieutenant Harmon T. Utter's PBY Catalina was attacked by three Japanese Mitsubishi A6M2 Type 0 Carrier Fighters. Chief Boatswain Earl D. Payne, Utter's Bow Gunner, shot down one, thus scoring the U.S. Navy's 'First Kill' Utter, as a Commander, would later coordinate the Carrier Air Strikes that lead to the destruction of the Japanese Battleship 'Yamato'. The PBY Catalina performed one of the first Offensive Operations against the Japanese by the US. On 27th December 1941, six PBY Catalina's of Patrol Squadron 101 Bombed Japanese Shipping at Jolo Island against Heavy Fighter Opposition, with four PBY Catalina's lost.

Most people are more than satisfied decorating just one Christmas tree. A close friend's mom decorates over a dozen of them, with the sort of exquisite detail usually only seen at the White House. Each tree has a theme, and her decorating expertise is stunning. One of those trees has an intricate bead-and-wire star, which is mesmerizing to look at just with normal eyes. With a macro lens? A whole new world of complexity.
I am standing in front of the famous Stari Most bridge. The Stari Most bridge is a 16th century Ottoman bridge in the city of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina that crosses the river Neretva and connects two parts of the city. The Old Bridge stood for 427 years, until it was destroyed on November 9, 1993 during the Croat-Bosniak War. A project was set in motion to reconstruct it, and the rebuilt bridge opened on July 23, 2004.
Roasted red & golden beets, carrots, green beans & Vidalia onion. Plus, salmon, bacon & goat cheese. It was so yummy!

Most folks will never see a river quite like this in a lifetime...I just stumbled, literally, upon it. Sandy bottom, no glass, garbage, sign of human habitation, water so clean you can literally drink it, fleck of gold in the sand, flat into the heart of the rain forest for two solid miles. True. And there are no bugs, no snakes, no crocs: paradise! Only orchids, bromeliads, rare flowers. There are more strange plants here than anywhere I have ever been, but you have to know what you are looking for!

Designed by John Roberts and Built in 1793, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, is almost 220 years old and is Ireland’s oldest Catholic Cathedral. In 2000, the square near Barronstrand Street (formerly known as “Red Square”) was re-named as “John Roberts Square” in light of the influence he had over the architecture of the two Cathedrals in Waterford.
Located in Barronstrand Street, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, is almost 211 years old and is Irelands oldest Catholic Cathedral.
Over the years the Cathedral has seen many changes ; 30 administrators, 21 Bishops of the Diocese and many structural changes. In the early part of this century railings used to stand, separating the church from the street; these were later removed. In more recent years, the Cathedral was refurbished in 1977 following the Second Vatican Council – A new altar was installed so that Mass could be celebrated facing the people. A gift of 10 crystal chandeliers from Waterford Crystal enhanced the decor of the Cathedral. In the early 1990′s a complete reflooring of the building and a restructuring of the sacristy took place to complete what is a truly wonderful Cathedral. Further work was completed in November 2006 with a re-fit of structure, the interior and exterior.

Most of us don't know it, but if you look closely at the back of a penny, Lincoln's monument is actually there between the pillars.
Most probably a Dendrochilum cobbianum, which is actually endemic to the Philippines. I have this growing in my backyard back home in the Philippines but this one I photographed at Chicago's Lincoln Park Conservatory Orchid House.

Charles Bridge (Czech: Karlův most) is a historic bridge that crosses the Vltava river in Prague, Czech Republic. Its construction started in 1357 under the auspices of King Charles IV, and finished in the beginning of the 15th century. The bridge replaced the old Judith Bridge built 1158–1172 that had been badly damaged by a flood in 1342. This new bridge was originally called Stone Bridge (Kamenný most) or Prague Bridge (Pražský most) but has been "Charles Bridge" since 1870. As the only means of crossing the river Vltava (Moldau) until 1841, Charles Bridge was the most important connection between Prague Castle and the city's Old Town and adjacent areas. This "solid-land" connection made Prague important as a trade route between Eastern and Western Europe.
This view is from the tower at the Old Town end of the bridge, and was taken in 1997 - probably in February-ish. Originally with a Praktica BC1 or BC3 and Prakticar 28mm F2.8. Slide 'copied' by projected onto A4 and taking a picture.
