Most of the winter you will need snowshoes or skis, but 2020-21 had relatively little snowfall (at least through mid-January) and the snow got fairly hard and compacted through repeated daily freezing and melting cycles. It reminded me of mountaineering in SoCal, where snowshoes are rarely required. I hiked up there in my boots.
According to Wikipedia, chickadees are of the same genus as the birds called "tits" in Europe, hence the tag. Sorry to disappoint.
2023 edit: According to the latest science, feeding the chickadees is not harmful for them: mitchbarrie.net/files/stats_and_articles/dont_feed_the_be...

The most remarkable monument of Taormina is the ancient theatre ( Roman-Greek theater), which is one of the most celebrated ruins in Sicily, on account both of its remarkable preservation and of the surpassing beauty of its situation. It is built for the most part of brick, and is therefore probably of Roman date, though the plan and arrangement are in accordance with those of Greek, rather than Roman, theatres; whence it is supposed that the present structure was rebuilt upon the foundations of an older theatre of the Greek period. With a diameter of 109 metres (after an expansion in the 2nd century), this theatre is the second largest of its kind in Sicily (after that of Syracuse); it is frequently used for operatic and theatrical performances and for concerts. The greater part of the original seats have disappeared, but the wall which surrounded the whole cavea is preserved, and the proscenium with the back wall of the scena and its appendages, of which only traces remain in most ancient theatres, are here preserved in singular integrity, and contribute much to the picturesque effect, as well as to the interest, of the ruin. From the fragments of architectural decorations still extant we learn that it was of the Corinthian order, and richly ornamented.
Creato dai greci ( III sec. a.C.), fu riedificato e ampliato in epoca romana.

Most people think of prickly pinpoint ends when they think of cacti. However, flowers are something that people can associate with cacti as well. Most, like these located in a beautiful garden on the campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, bloom from mid-spring to mid-summer.
Unlike other blooms, the flower on a cactus actually grows inside out. You're actually not seeing any flower tissue at all except for the sepals and petals at the very tip when you look at a cactus flower; all the rest is vegetative stem and leaf, and the true flower parts are inside. The flower usually has many stamens, but only a single style, which may branch at the end into more than one stigma. The stamens usually arise from all over the inner surface of the upper part of the floral tube, although in some cacti, the stamens are produced in one or more distinct "series" in more specific areas of the inside of the floral tube.
Most of the Metro trains I rode on this trip were packed. There were several events going on in DC today including a rally that supposedly drew 30,000 people. I got this moment of emptiness at the New Carrollton, MD station, which is at the far reaches of the Metro's jurisdiction and probably not a terribly popular station.
These trains are carpeted (carpeted!) and have cushioned seats.
Most annoying when someone gets in your way in a photo, however Oxford Bus Scania Enviro 400 WF10 OXF is seen here on Friday 17 August outside Oxford rail station.

Most people like photos of the finished work but the ones I love the most are like this, where you can see how artificial the scenes are. There is something much more interesting to me about seeing the oil stains on the garage floor, the other backdrops and powerleads, and yet somehow within the cramped space I have created this beautiful image. A diamond in the rough.
The most ancient and modern forms of transport pass each other, as an Australian Light Armoured Vehicle (ASLAV) patrols towards its home base in southern Afghanistan.
The ASLAV is part of the massive convoy of Australian vehicles making their way to the Australian base in Tarin Kowt, after two weeks of operations in southern Afghanistan.
With their mission well ahead of schedule and Afghanistan?s essential Highway 1 reopened, the soldiers of the 1st Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force, began the arduous 400km journey to their home base in Tarin Kowt.
The soldiers travelled from Zabol Province to Kandahar Air Field ? a journey that saw them utilising both of the bridges they had rebuilt. Whilst at Kandahar the convoy took the opportunity to refurbish essential stores before heading northwards to Oruzgan Province and their home in Camp Holland.
During parts of the journey Canadian, American and Dutch allies supported the Australian Troop movements.

Bellagio Conservatory description.
Most hotels have gardeners, but the Bellagio has 120 of them. That's not including the designers, engineers and electricians who work behind the scenes to make all that magic happen. With 15,000-18,000 visitors to impress every day, you don't have to be a genius to understand why they need so many hands on deck.
Five times a year: Chinese New Year, spring, summer, fall and winter, the Bellagio Conservatory team creates a full-blown floral production. For an entire week, the staff work 24 hours a day to transform the nearly 14,000-square-foot space with tens of thousands of flowers, trees, and plants.
The horticulturalists, who are artists in their own right, create jaw-dropping displays that most people couldn't even make with paper, let alone flowers. It's pretty safe to say that they have more creativity in their pinky fingers than most of us do in our entire bodies.
During the course of each seasonal exhibit, more than 10,000 potted flowers are hand-watered and switched out every two weeks. Don't worry, all the wilted flowers are reused and converted to mulch, in fact 90 percent of the conservatory is recycled. How's that for green? These creations are so impressive that more than 5 million visitors a year come to experience them.
Most collectors love a good deal.
Around the November to Xmas 2018 time frame, Amazon starting clearing out some of their older Transformer items, presumably to make space for what was going to the upcoming line, Siege.
Of the greatest interest would be clearances that were on the three deluxe class Amazon exclusives. Of the three, one of them dipped to $10 and just kept dropping - Repugnus. This downward trend kept going until Boxing Day, after which all the figures returned to their normal (and insane) MSRPs, with some adjustment as demand called for.
So just why was Repugnus so unloved? I guess a bit of history for those who aren't familiar.
Repugnus is one of the three Monsterbots, an Autobot subfaction that consisted of three members - Twinferno (aka Doublecross back in the 80s), Grotesque, and Repugnus. Clearly created at a time when Takara might have been scraping the bottom of the barrel creatively, I can't say I remember them being particularly popular when I was a kid, especially when the competition was the Headmasters. Everything about them was just... odd.
As part of the G1 homages Hasbro, all three Monsterbots were released. Twinferno was released as a regular item during the Titans Return line, Grotesque was a Toys R Us exclusive in the US (right before they closed down), and Repugnus went to Amazon. Repugnus was particularly interesting because he was released as a Titan Master in the Hasbro lineup.
So the Amazon exclusive figure was released as a set which came with the figure, a Titan Master named "Dastard", who became the head of Repugnus, a Prime Master named "Solus Prime" (who, for the record, is a much prettier looking chick in the animated web series), and two swords as weapons. I have no idea which figure Repugnus is a remould of, but clearly Hasbro was stretching the limit of retooling, as you can see how tacked on the alt mode is.
The figure itself is fine, I suppose. It doesn't particularly wow me, but for the $10 I paid, it's not bad. While it came with an extra mini-figure, Repugnus somewhat fails as a figure due to the lack of a waist joint, as well as a face so cheaply painted that the Titan Master version destroys it. Actual paint apps on the body of Repugnus are sparse, but cleanly applied. The same can't be said for the mini-figures themselves. I will give credit to Hasbro for using more than two colours of plastic on this figure, however.
Of course, being a Titan Returns release, Hasbro came up with creative ways for you to use your mini figures with the main body, such as a built in cockpit, and of course, turning the weapons into a sled to accommodate said figure.
The Amazon exclusives were overpriced to begin with, and the rather dull final product of Repugnus, combined with the general awkwardness of the character itself, didn't do much to sell the figure. Much like myself, many simply bought the thing because it was cheap, and not because it was cool or amazing. The inability to complete the set probably didn't help matters either.
Ultimately, probably the weakest of the store exclusives that were available.

The venue is also interesting: an old building in Király Street, Budapest, apparently an apartment house once, a residential, actually the one-time wine trading center of the Jálics family, which had been built by József Hild in the 1840s, has been rebuilt and refurbished in recent years, and was opened a few weeks ago as an art and design exhibition complex. The old cellars of the wine traders can be seen perfectly in this view: the ground floor is divided by a transparent glass surface, so one can study the life below/above depending on which floor she/he is standing at the moment.

The photos in this album are from my third and most extensive visit to China. China's natural wonders, delicious food, and rich cultural heritage make it a fascinating place to explore.
The rise of translation apps, booking services, and other tools also make it vastly more easy and less daunting to explore than - perhaps - it was a dozen years or so ago for those who don't speak Chinese. For many, I think they've built up visiting China into something far more difficult than it is.
The bigger challenge is actually navigating the crowds. Especially in the country's spectacular national parks. Which is why I've aimed my trips for the depths of off season. Many of these parks are designed to handle tens of thousands of visitors per day - on Mount Huangshan, I heard there were around 1,300 of us in the park compared to 35,000 at peak season. The result was a near complete absence of western tourists, and the opportunity to explore the parks without crowds and with very few other people.
The trip involved around two weeks in China with stops in Shanghai, Huangshan National Park, Xiapu, Tianmen Mountain, and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.

Most people in Ratanakiri in Cambodia belong to one of nearly 2-dozen ethnic minority groups and speak languages other than Khmer, the national tongue. Education is hard to find in the province. Preschool education is even harder.
Schools are generally poor in Cambodia, and those in Ratanakiri, an impoverished province tucked up against the Vietnam border, are below average.
Plan runs a pre-primary schooling project in Ratanakiri, with 8 preschools having been built. The schools are free to attend and teaching materials and games are provided. Plan also helps to train the teachers. Salaries and running costs are the government's responsibility, part of a strategy to ensure sustainability.
