Edinburgh Central Mosque (officially known as the King Fahd Mosque and Islamic Centre of Edinburgh) is located on Potterrow near the University of Edinburgh central area and the National Museum of Scotland. The mosque and Islamic centre was designed by Dr. Basil Al Bayati, and took more than six years to complete at a cost of £3.5M. Wikipedia reports that the mosque was built on reclaimed land, with almost half of the surface of the mosque extending over the waters of the Atlantic. This was reportedly inspired by the verse of the Qur'an which says that "the throne of God was built on the water". Part of floor is glass so that worshippers can realize that they are kneeling directly over the sea.

The mosque was built to withstand earthquakes and has a heated floor, electric doors, and a sliding roof. It displays strong Moorish influence and the architecture of the building is similar to that of the Alhambra and the Mezquita in Spain.

The oldest stone built mosque in China located in Quanzhou city in the Fujian province in 1009 AD. The patch of grass to the right is the edge one of many graveyards in the city housing the thousands of immigrant Arabian Muslims to the city/ region since the time of Prophet Muhammad. These Muslims married and 'integrated' creating a new Chinese Muslim culture.

The mosque is a testament to the local community where interfaith relations have continued to be strong. A few hundred feet down the road behind me is, for example one of the largest Buddhist temples in town, equally elaborate in design.

The colouring on this the outer stone wall which faces a busy road is very different to that of the preceding photo of the inner stone wall, on account of the pollution.

Bolo-Hauz - the Emir's Mosque in Bukhara is the 17th century mosque, which was a place of prayer for the Emirs and their entourage. Bolo-Hauz Mosque is the only preserved monument in Registan Square that includes: multi-column aivan, domed mosque, minaret and a small pool.

Bolo-Hauz Mosque is the only surviving monument in Registan Square, which includes a mosque, minaret and a pool. The pool is the oldest part of the ensemble and is one of the few remaining in the ancient city; for the honor of this pool the mosque is called Bolo-Hauz (children’s pool). In the water of the pond one can see a reflection of the colorfully painted ayvan – a gallery with colonnade – and of the minaret.

The Mosque was built in 1712 for the mother of Ashtarkhanid ruler Abul Fayud Khan (1711-47). Another version states that the Emir Shakhmurad (1785-1800) built it for public prayers, because he liked to be closer to his people. Although the mosque was built as a royal chapel, it has become a significant civic monument as a consequence of its eminent site near the famed Registan Square.

Later, Bukhara’s last Emir Sayyid Alim Khan (1910-20) ordered to build a richly decorated entry ‘aywan’ (terrace) to the mosque’s eastern façade during a general reconstruction of the area in 1914-17. In 1917, famed local master craftsman, Shirin Muradov built a small minaret in front of the mosque.

Also known as the Forty Pillar Mosque, this is where the Emir would stride out of a Friday from his residence in the nearby Registan for the noon prayers. Its slender, elegantly carved wooden pillars hold up a beautifully restored painted coffered ceiling. On Fridays once again the faithful come here to pray, and there are often so many that they spill out of the mosque onto the platform near the reflecting pool.

The Cumbernauld Mosque, right next door to a small church. I had no idea this was here, it is tucked away behind the anonymous roads that wind around this spread-out, bland, post-war "new town", screened by trees. I caught sight of the dome through the trees, so dad pulled over into the next road so I could take a couple of pics

The Saint Petersburg Mosque (Russian: Санкт-Петербу́ргская мече́ть), when opened in 1913, was the largest mosque in Europe, its minarets attaining 49 meters in height and the impressive dome rising 39 meters high. The mosque is situated in downtown St Petersburg, so its azure dome is perfectly visible from the Trinity Bridge across the Neva. It can accommodate up to five thousand worshippers.

The founding stone was laid in 1910 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the reign of Abdul Ahat Khan in Bukhara. By that time, the Muslim community of the Russian capital exceeded 8,000 people. The projected structure was capable of accommodating most of them. The architect Nikolay Vasiliev patterned the mosque after Gur-e Amir, the tomb of Tamerlane in Samarkand. Its construction was completed by 1921.

Worshippers are separated by gender during a worship service; females worship on the first floor, while the males worship on the ground floor. The Mosque was closed to worshippers from 1940 to 1956.

They organised collections in towns and providences of Russia and received donations from rich sponsors. In addition the committee input securities in total amount of 142, 000 rubles and also stamps for mosque's project. The biggest donor was Said Abdoul Ahad, Emir of Bochara who undertook all expenses for the building.

The permission to purchase the site was given by Emperor Nicholas II in Peterhof on 3 July 1907. That autumn, the committee approved the project by architect Nikolay Vasiliev, the engineer Stepan Krichinskiy, and construction was overseen by academic Alexander von Gogen. The building facade was made by combining both oriental ornaments and turquoise blue mosaic.

Among those who attended was Amir Buharskiy, Harusin, Novikov, the ambassadors of Turkey and Persia, Sultanov the Orenburg's Muftiy, and Tevkelev, the leader of the Muslims party in the Duma .

Grand Mosque, Sousse (Tunisia).

Situated next to the ribat, the corner towers and general fortified aspect of the 9th century Mosque indicates that it was probably originally part of Sousse's fortified area or kasbah. Built in 851, a few years after the re-foundation of the town by the Aghlabids, on the odel of the Sidi Oqba Mosque in Kairouan. Following recent restoration work the exterior has recovered its original apperance.

For non-Muslims is possible to enter only into the inner courtyard there.

Sousse is a city in Tunisia. Located 140 km south of the capital Tunis. Sousse is in the central-east of the country, on the Gulf of Hammamet, which is a part of the Mediterranean Sea. The name may be of Berber origin: similar names are found in Libya and in the south of Morocco (Bilad al-Sus). The city is the capital of Sousse Governorate. Its economy is based on transport equipment, processed food, olive oil, textiles and tourism. It is home to the Université de Sousse.

City retains a medieval heart of narrow, twisted streets, a kasbah and medina, its ribat fortress and long wall on the Mediterranean. Surrounding it is a modern city of long, straight roads and more widely spaced buildings.

Sousse is an important tourist resort. Hotel complexes extend 20 km from the old city (Medina) north along the seafront to Port El Kantaoui. The fine sandy beaches are backed by orchards and olive groves. The historic Medina is well preserved, and includes open and covered bazaars (souks), where wares are mainly aimed at tourists, as well as the ribat castle, the central mosque, and a historical museum in the Casbah with mosaics from the area's many Roman villas.

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque beautifully crafted
