Moscow, Russia

Last night of the journey

First powered by an undershot water wheel, later a "Dayton", but I believe James P Leffel two stage water turbine. The power shaft from the existing turbine to the mill is still in place. Converted to electric in the 1950's due to the undependable water supply from the Flatrock River. Moscow, Indiana is an unincorporated community of 80 residents. It was founded in 1832. Home to the Moscow Covered Bridge that was destroyed by a tornado on June 3, 2008. The county used prisoners to salvage timbers from the river which were later used on the rebuilt bridge. I got a wonderful tour of the mill and description of it's history from the current owner. It's now a woodworking mill making custom restoration items.

PO74 thunders by Moscow station on a bitter cold morning. This was the first run of the DL 3612, the second of 4 former Cartier Railway M636's to be thrown into service on the DL.

Before their time on the DL, the 4 MLWs served the Western New York & Pennsylvania railroad for a good while hauling coal trains, sand, and other commodities throughout the Allgheny Mountains and western NY.

The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour remains a working church and so provides visitors with a wonderful opportunity to immerse themselves in the workings of the Russian Orthodox Church With its immense size, the cathedral has a capacity over 1,000 worshipers and is the largest cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church. The original cathedral was blown-up by the atheist Soviet government in order to build the largest open-air swimming pool in the world on its former site .

the time of poplar fuzz in moscow gives the city volume, lightness, and a certain fairy-tale feel.

especially during the golden hour.

and although the down gets in my eyes and is especially unpleasant for allergy sufferers, I love watching it fly. and I love the way it curls up into a down swirl on the asphalt, forming thick clouds near the sidewalks. where especially desperate students light it with a lighter and the poplar down bursts into a short, running flame
