Aït Benhaddou in Morocco is one of those places you dream of visiting, different, exotic, and it lets your fantasy flow, when you try to imagine life here before. Still some few families live around the kasbahs, but most have moved away, or into the ordinary settlement on the other side of the river.

Nowadays it is a Unesco World Heritage site.

Aït Benhaddou (Berber: Ath Benhadu, Arabic: آيت بن حدّو‎) is a 'fortified city', or ksar, along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech in present-day Morocco. It is situated in Souss-Massa-Draâ on a hill along the Ounila River and has some beautiful examples of kasbahs, which unfortunately sustain damage during each rainstorm. Most of the town's inhabitants now live in a more modern village at the other side of the river; however, ten families still live within the ksar.

Aït Benhaddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and several films have been shot there, including;

* Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

* The Man Who Would Be King (film) (1975)

* The Message (film) (1976)

* Jesus of Nazareth (1977)

* Time Bandits (1981)

* The Jewel of the Nile (1985)

* The Living Daylights (1987)

* The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)

* The Sheltering Sky (1990)

* Kundun (1997)

* The Mummy (1999)

* Gladiator (2000)

* Alexander (2004)

Last trip I wanted to go to explore a few places that I hadn't in several years. Morocco was one of those places. I am constantly amazed at the level of detail Disney puts into everything. FYI on a side note, after doing a little research, Morocco is the only pavilion in Epcot to be sponsored by its government, all others are sponsored by corporations. Cheers, j

Located in the foothills on the southern slopes of the High Atlas in the Province of Ouarzazate, the site of Ait-Ben-Haddou is the most famous ksar in the Ounila Valley. The Ksar of Aït BenHaddou is a striking example of southern Moroccan architecture. The ksar is a mainly collective grouping of dwellings. Inside the defensive walls which are reinforced by angle towers and pierced with a baffle gate, houses crowd together - some modest, others resembling small urban castles with their high angle towers and upper sections decorated with motifs in clay brick - but there are also buildings and community areas. It is an extraordinary ensemble of buildings offering a complete panorama of pre-Saharan earthen construction techniques.

A view of the old town of Azemmour (Azmir) from the top of the the ancient partly ruined Kasbah, the graceful minaret of an old mosque contrasting with the modern satellite dishes on rooftops. The kasbah was built by the Portuguese in the 1500s but the town of Azemmour(once called Azmir) has been inhabited as far back as the Romans and Phoenicians. There is a local legend connecting Azemmour to the Carthaginian army and General Hannibal when he dreamed of a Dragon coming to devour him. The story is literally woven into the history of this ancient town, as modern Zemmouri weavers often incorporate colorfully embroidered or woven dragons into fabric and garments manufactured here in Azemmour. They are very sought-after and prized for their quality and the historic heritage.
