So we woke up at 3:30AM, took the 40mins drive to the Maroon Bells. The posted sign on the road there warned us that reservation is required, of course we did not know that (duh). Managed to get on the World Wide Web (lolz) to realize that booking is completely full for the next several weeks. Oh well, we pushed on since no one was at the gate (of course, it only slightly passed 4AM 😇). We really do want to follow the rule if we would have known sooner.
None of us was there before and we could not figure out how to get to the lake in pitch black 25F degree moonless night. Luckily another car pulled up and the gentlemen agreed to lead us there. He huddled us up, whispering "I've been to this place for 45 years, it's a sacred place, please do not speak loudly as it can disturb the active wildlife at this hour and please only shine the flashlight down toward the dirt road" - Yes sir..........we moved on.
Many clicks later, the sun was finally up, we finished what we set out for. Walked back to the car, and there, the park ranger was waiting........$130 fine later 🍁🍂. it is well worthed 😍
One of the shot in almost complete darkness.......
The Andromeda Galaxy also known as Messier 31, M31, or NGC 224 and originally the Andromeda Nebula, is a spiral galaxy approximately 2.5 million light-years from Earth, and the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way. The galaxy's name stems from the area of Earth's sky in which it appears, the constellation of Andromeda.
The virial mass of the Andromeda Galaxy is of the same order of magnitude as that of the Milky Way, at a trillion solar masses.
The number of stars contained in the Andromeda Galaxy is estimated at one trillion, or roughly twice the number estimated for the Milky Way.
The Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies are expected to collide in around 4.5 billion years, merging to form a giant elliptical galaxy or a large lenticular galaxy. With an apparent magnitude of 3.4, the Andromeda Galaxy is among the brightest of the Messier Objects making it visible to the naked eye from Earth on moonless nights, even when viewed from areas with moderate light pollution.

On a moonless night in Yosemite at Tenaya Lake, the Milky Way is bright even with smoky haze from valley lights far below the 8200 foot elevation. It was spooky dark but so much fun!

I had a dream, which was not all a dream.
The bright sun was extinguish'd, and the stars
Did wander darkling in the eternal space,
Rayless, and pathless, and the icy earth
Swung blind and blackening in the moonless air;
Morn came, and went and came, and brought no day,
And men forgot their passions in the dread
Of this desolation; and all hearts
Were chill'd into a selfish prayer for light.......... (Lord Byron)
The Andromeda Galaxy (Messier 31) is the nearest large galaxy to our own Milky Way and one of the most magnificent objects in the night sky. Visible as a faint small smudge from a dark site on a moonless night, M31 is a gigantic aggregation of hundreds of billions of stars at a distance of about 2.5 million light years.
Once thought to be a nebula inside our own Galaxy, its true nature was discovered by Edwin Hubble in 1925, which measured the distance of this "island universe" by studying a special class of pulsating stars known as Cepheids (his estimated distance was more than half smaller than the present value but still large enough to put it well outside the extent of our own Milky Way Galaxy).
M31 is classified as a spiral galaxy with its galactic plane inclined about 13o to our line of sight, and it is therefore seen nearly edge-on. It has a number of smaller satellite galaxies, the most prominent of which are M32 (the bright, star-like concentration above and to the left of the nucleus) and M110, the more extended bright patch below and to the right of the nucleus). Astronomers have found evidence of a massive black hole at the center of this galaxy (as is the case for our own Milky Way).
They have also calculated that we are in a collision course with our grand neighbor in space - approaching each other at a speed of about 100 Km/sec, the two galaxies will collide in about 3 billion years and maybe merge into a giant elliptical galaxy.
I can’t really know if E.T.’s home was the Andromeda Galaxy, but I can tell you that this galaxy is exceptional, either through a telescope or in deep sky photographs.
I wish you all health, happiness and clear skies!

Another in my series of rural Nebraska churches photographed at night with the Milky Way. It's surprising how many nice old church buildings are in rural Nebraska. Most seem to be in areas where light pollution is low enough to be able to see the Milky Way on a clear moonless night.
The building is an HDR bracketed exposure composite of 5 photos put together in Lightroom and the sky is a composite of 10 photos taken at 15 seconds, ISO 3200, for noise reduction. The sky photos were composited in Photoshop and the overall picture was composited in Photoshop.
I have no confident explanation for the rainbow glow I got here. I added a little saturation in post but it was in the jpeg right out of the camera too. I'm going to assume it's somehow related to the light coming from Seattle which would be off to the left of the image.

Gaunt in gloom,
The pale stars their torches,
Enshrouded, wave.
Ghostfires from heaven's far verges faint illume,
Arches on soaring arches,
Night's sindark nave.
Seraphim,
The lost hosts awaken
To service till
In moonless gloom each lapses muted, dim,
Raised when she has and shaken
Her thurible.
And long and loud,
To night's nave upsoaring,
A starknell tolls
As the bleak incense surges, cloud on cloud,
Voidward from the adoring
Waste of souls.

Elephant Rock in Valley of Fire, Nevada. It was a beautiful moonless night, great for light painting and capturing the Milky Way. It is hard to believe that this wonderful place is just out side of Las Vegas.
The Wings sit gracefully under a sky full of stars on a moonless night in the Bisti Badlands of New Mexico.
was a beautiful moonless night in El Dorado Canyon, a perfect time in the Mojave Desert to light paint this classic truck, with the Milky Way, in the night sky.
On a recent moonless summer evening, I photographed a patch of echinacea in my parents' backyard. Some glow sticks and a headlamp were my light painting tools for the long exposure. My magical-thinking four year-old was easily convinced that I had tried to photograph faeries who tend the flower garden at night.
One last shot of Delicate Arch near Moab, Utah. It was getting dark and time to start the 1.5 mile hike back to the car. By the time I packed up and started down it was dark on this moonless night. I was happy to have my CCD cleaning flashlight in my camera bag!

Messier 33, also known as the Triangulum Galaxy, is the third-largest galaxy in the Local Group, following the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way.
M33 was one of the first objects I photographed three years ago. Due to its brightness, I took advantage of a moonless evening to capture it.

This image was taken near Felton, Queensland, Australia. I finally got a clear moonless evening to go out and take a few shots after work. They are few and far between lately.

2nd verse:
I just want to be in the graveyard
Cause I know that I can never heal my black heart
I know that I’m f*cked up but I like it and I don’t know why
The only thing that can kinda heal my soul
Is this song which I’m writing with the devil in my room
And he’s looking down at me with all his negativity but I am sure that that’s the only thing that really sets me free

The end has just begun
Oooo

With every step forward
I fall into the secrets of the shadows

What you wanna do cause the devil lives in me
I’m f*cked up but I like it

C/2022 E3 (ZTF) is a long-period comet from the Oort cloud that was discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) on 2 March 2022.[1] The comet has a bright green glow around its nucleus, due to the effect of sunlight on diatomic carbon and cyanogen.[6][5]
The comet's systematic designation starts with C to indicate that it is not a periodic comet, and "2022 E3" means that it was the third comet to be discovered in the first half of March 2022.[5]
The comet nucleus was estimated to be about a kilometre in size, rotating every 8.7 hours.[7][8] Its tails of dust and gas extended for millions of kilometres and, during January 2022, a third anti-tail was visible.[9]
The comet reached its perihelion on 12 January 2023, at a distance of 1.11 AU (166 million km; 103 million mi), and the closest approach to Earth was on 1 February 2023, at a distance of 0.28 AU (42 million km; 26 million mi). The comet reached magnitude 5 and is visible with the naked eye under moonless dark skies.[10][11][12][13] (Wikipedia)

A moonless night, meant I could shoot star trails over the river Test - but added a style I wanted to create which involved adding a final frame of 'pin stars' to produce almost comet like trails.
After the feared Bloodhounds had gotten rid of the "Toy Plague", the noble Lady Akira and the Archmage needed to get rid of the last witnesses of their mistake: The Bloodhounds themselves. Intrigues ripped the kingdom apart and the Bloodhounds escaped the claws of the Ladies trap only by a hair's breadth. Still every living soul hunted them down for their heads. In order to survive, Rodolfinho and Asahito decided to strike first. It was a dark and moonless night, when they snuck into the palace and assassinated the King. Meanwhile the noble lady and her wise mage managed to flee and have never been seen again, down to the present day. Upon the sunrise, the land was drenched in blood. The culprits had disappeared. All that remained were legends of the two infamous assassins that were now called: The Kinglsayers.
Meanwhile Rodolfinho and Asahito explored the world, travelled across all the lands and islands, making a living of their finest of arts: Killing.
Asahito tilts his head while he looks at the humongous billboard. It reads: "Are you bored of humans? We are too. The Kingslayers - Hire now!" Pondering he tips his pointing fingers on his chin.
"Do you think this advertisement is a good idea?", he asks and turns towards Rod. With a smirk his friend looks up from the console of their flying gunship. Had they known sooner there were flying ships, they would have left the old kingdom long ago.
"Of course, my boy! Just look at all the missions it brought us!", he gets up from the cockpit chair and grabs his Katana, while tossing another one towards Asahito. With a quick movement of his hand he catches it in the air.
"You know they'll never catch us anyway. We are too quick. What's the next mission?", he continued.
"Killing the President of this charitable corporation who secretly deals with organs apparently.", Asahito replies with a smirk and gets up from his chair.
"I like the first part." Rod paused. His confusion was clear to read off his face. "So we kill the guys who pretend to be good but are actually bad? Doesn't that make us the good guys?"
"It makes us the guys who get paid for killing.", Asahito replies with a grin.

I just returned from a 10 day shoot in the Lofoten Islands, centered on the spring equinox. The spring and autumnal equinoxes are supposedly the most active times for the aurora, and that certainly played out during my trip.
One of the things you don't really think about until you're out shooting is how much some foreground light can really help a night scene, be it the Milky Way or the Aurora. A completely black sky can make the foreground elements extremely noisy, if not impossible to see. I took this shot from a pullout on the very edge of the village of Ramberg (pop. 350), which provided a nice glow on the mountains on this calm moonless night.
In an old forgotten cemetery, beneath a moonless night, I walk upon a carpet of glowing petals. My black dress brushes the cold earth, catching their glow like an unreal breath. With every step, the dead awaken, dust off their bone instruments, and resume the concert they never finished. The melody rises, haunting and beautiful, and I dance. Guardian of a world where silence has no place and beauty turns dark. 💀️

Di certo, l’enigma più grande e straordinario, ancora più che l’Universo, è la nostra mente, di cui ancora sappiamo tanto poco, molto meno di quello che essa ha capito dell’universo.
