Taken near Topaz Lake on a moonless night. The exposure was about 45 minutes. This is adjusted to a tungsten white balance.

Always its shadows are insensibly altering, disappearing here, appearing there...

And just after sunset the reds deepen to dim purples and the grays and yellows and greens change to magical blues. In the dark of a moonless night the canyon suggests unimaginable mysteries :-)

The sky was full of stars, even though it was pure white until an hour ago. It was a strong wind as usual, but everyone was absorbed in taking pictures. The Milky Way in winter is not gorgeous, but the Milky Way drawn in the moonless sky was beautiful.

Yarigatake can be seen in the distance.

Yes, we do. Not only, when we are drunk, we do it all the time. The earth rotates, and this pretty fast (> 1000 km/h at the equator).

Well, we had a starry, moonless night today, as we didn't have for a long time. Of course, i set up my gear, went home, watched "Alien vs Predator II" on TV and picked my camera up afterwards. This is a stacked image out of 205 single exposures.

Standing still under the band of the Milky Way - the Celestial River of uncountable stars of our own Galaxy - this boat rests quietly on fine grains of sand created long ago. How long ago is exceedingly difficult to answer since the erosion of rocks and the formation of sand is an ongoing procedure.

Another interesting question is whether there are more grains of sand on all the beaches of Earth than there are stars in the whole Universe. And although one might argue that the stars probably outnumber the grains of sand, the only certain thing is that every single grain of sand and every single cell of our body, has been at some time part of a stellar interior, since all the heavy elements of the Universe have been created in the interiors of stars and have being ejected to interstellar space by exploding stars, only to be incorporated by next generation stars and ultimately into what now comprises our Solar system and our bodies. We are all made of stardust after all.

Thanks to everyone for visiting my photos, for all your faves and comments, I deeply appreciate it! Wishing you all the best! Clear skies and health to you and your families.

Technical info and some personal thoughts:

Photographing the Milky Way from that place on the beach proved problematic, since the wide angle lens at f/2.8 captured an annoyingly great amount of light pollution from the distant village, even in ten-second exposures, so I had to take many shots to find the best settings, as a balance between capturing more of the starlight and less of the light pollution. Clearly not the best place to photograph the Milky Way, but it is so relaxing to be on a beach on a clear, moonless summer night, under the canopy of stars with no people around, contemplating the mysteries of the Universe, that I could not resist it!

The Andromeda Galaxy (Messier 31) is the nearest large galaxy to our own Milky Way and one of the most magnificent objects in the night sky. Visible as a faint small smudge from a dark site on a moonless night, M31 is a gigantic aggregation of hundreds of billions of stars at a distance of about 2.5 million light years.

Once thought to be a nebula inside our own Galaxy, its true nature was discovered by Edwin Hubble in 1925, which measured the distance of this "island universe" by studying a special class of pulsating stars known as Cepheids.

M31 is classified as a spiral galaxy with its galactic plane inclined about 13 degrees to our line of sight, and it is therefore seen nearly edge-on. It has, as our own Galaxy, a number of smaller satellite galaxies, the most prominent of which are M32 (the bright, star-like concentration at bottom right at the edge of the spiral arm) and M110, the more extended bright patch at upper left. Astronomers have found evidence of a massive black hole at the center of this galaxy (as is the case for our own Milky Way).

They have also calculated that we are in a collision course with our grand neighbor in space: approaching each other at a speed of about 100 Km/sec, the two galaxies will collide in about 4 billion years and maybe merge into a giant elliptical galaxy.

There is an ongoing discussion about whether or not aurora photography is best done on a moonless night or with moonlight. Both certainly give a very different kind of atmosphere. For comparison see this picture (made in Finland) that I uploaded previously www.flickr.com/photos/145831439@N04/49957508296/in/datepo...

Pictures taken with moonlight can really show you the landscape whilst moonless pictures really show the aurora to its maximum. For everyone to decide but for me, both are a great subject!

Feb. 26 just after midnight presented a frigid, moonless winter night sky in southwestern Virginia. More cold blasts with more snow on the weekend. A good bit of Jan. 16's snow remains on the ground, which is unusual for our part of the country. Nikon D850, manual mode, ISO 4500, 20 seconds, Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 lens at f/2.8 and 15mm. I, am the mystery

And I, am the bringer of moonless night

Bear the wisdom arcane

I, harbinger from the burrowed isle

Once you break forth

Hearken the flap of my wings

Haunt your fears

Though you don't know of my duty to lead

Your path, because I'll take, you home

To rest in my black wings, enfolding you

I am the icon sublime

The guide on the voyage, clandestine

Sing the verses bewailed

I, torch of the radiant way

Once you step out

Hearken the strokes of my wings

Once you will leave your cocoon

I will be there

Haunt your fears

Though you don't know of my duty to lead

Your path, because I'll take, you home

To rest in my black wings, enfolding you

And death will smile his barefaced smile

Initiating your final anguish

It is not before my arrival

That you will be lead to feel the natural serenity of leaving this world...

Hear my wings caressing the wind

Hear my cry

Haunt your fears

Though you don't know of my duty to lead

Your path, because I'll take, you home

To rest in my black wings, enfolding you

NOESIS Science Center and Technology Museum in Thessaloniki, Greece is a modern cultural and educational institution, which serves a major role in the dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge to the public since 2004.

The main attractions are the Technology Museum, including three permanent exhibitions (Ancient Greek Technology, Car showroom and the hands-on interactive Technopark), the Wide Screen Cinema projecting 2D and 3D films, the Virtual Reality Simulator and of course the Planetarium.

The Planetarium, recently upgraded with six high resolution laser projectors and powerful computer servers, offers its visitors a unique viewing experience under its huge hemispherical dome, displaying stunning astronomical representations. Both pre-recorded and live presentations, using the Uniview real-time astronomical software are presented.

Of course, as an amateur astronomer, I must admit that as much as I enjoy programming and projecting a digital sky full of stars, there is no substitute for the real thing: being under the stars on the clear, moonless night away from city lights.

If you ever come to Greece, a visit to NOESIS will certainly reward you.

My best wishes to everyone,

George B.

Were dark clouds in a moonless sky.

Fell or Tunturi are hills or mountains high enough to be above the tree line and have alpine tundra vegetation.

On a moonless night, the snow reflects the northern lights giving a surprising green glow to the landscape.

This picture was made on the way up near Saariselka in Finnish Lapland.

A bright and cold night at the Finnish Russian border on the Paatsjoki river near Nellim. This is a great place to look for the Northern Lights as there are no nearby towns/settlements causing light pollution. It was made on a moonless night with temperatures around minues 30 Celcius.

The Milky Way rises above the "Valley Of Dreams" in the Bisti Badlands of New Mexico.

After an extensive and confusing drive across the Bisti/De-na-zin Wilderness we arrived in the Valley Of Dreams. I started up the Giai GPS app and Wayne Pinkston, Chris Wrey, Sandra Herber and I started into the valley at around 4:00pm. After surveying the area and marking some of the more interesting formations, we returned to the cars for some snacks and rest. There were 4 in the group and at midnight we trekked off once again into the valley, although now its was very dark, so dark that without my headlamp on I couldn't see my hand in front of my face. The movie "Pitch Black" immediately came to mind, and the hair started to rise on the back of my neck. I scoured the area with my torchlight and moved on somewhat at comfort. As we crossed over the ravine and climbed up to the plateau I could here sounds like pebbles falling here and there which reminded me of another movie where a young Jedi is ambushed by the sand people. I think my imagination went into overdrive and I felt a rush of adrenaline. To my relief the path crested and we dropped into the "area of interest" which is a sprawling valley rutted with gutters and crevices as far as the eye could see with maligned and mutated shapes jutting up all over the place, except for now its just eerie shapes silhouetted against a starry sky so bright it almost makes you dizzy looking at it there on this dark moonless night.

We used one small 125 LED panel and bounched that light off some of the rocks off to the right side which picked up some of the color of the natural rock and casts that onto the scene. a tip learned from Wayne.

At least it is for me. Last night was the first properly clear, moonless, windless night I've seen this year. The sky was a mass of stars so I just had to get out. This shot was taken looking east and showing part of the low arch of the Milky Way shortly before the galactic centre was visible. Single tracked shot of the sky blended with an untracked foreground.

Pretty stoked to catch a beautiful clear night sky from Takaka. I knew there was a chance for a moonless night so pretty happy I had to go outside to my camper else I probably would have forgotten. I did a little mission into a grassy paddock to catch this.

Check it out on my Society6 shop here. The rug is on my wishlist!

I have traveled many moonless nights

Cold and weary with a babe inside

And I wonder what I've done

Holy father you have come

And chosen me now to carry your son

I am waiting in a silent prayer

I am frightened by the load I bear

In a world as cold as stone

Must I walk this path alone?

Be with me now

Be with me now

Breath of heaven

Hold me together

Be forever near me

Breath of heaven

Breath of heaven

Lighten my darkness

Pour over me your holiness

For you are holy

Breath of heaven

Do you wonder as you watch my face

If a wiser one should have had my place

But I offer all I am

For the mercy of your plan

Help me be strong

Help me be

Help me

Breath of heaven

Hold me together

Be forever near…

Cropped slightly from a 360 x 180 degree panorama.

Multiple layers were shot at sunset, blue hour, and moonset to illuminate the landscape. Each of their individual hues can be seen painted across the spires in gold, blue, and orange. Then a moonless night sky was also shot around midnight to complete the sky.

Laugh a lot and when you are old all your wrinkles will be in the right places.

I still it from here

I went down south to Bixby Bridge last night to do some night photography. It was the first clear moonless night in a while. I was able to get some of the Milky Way and a nice car streak that was not blown out to much. I exposed the foreground at f2.8 at ISO 2000 for 5 minutes and the sky at f3.5 at ISO 2000 for 30 seconds.

I would also like to thank Matt Walker for the inspiration for this photograph. Bixby and Beyond

It was moonless very dark autumn night. The powerful Aurora borealis shone beautifully in the company of the stars.

A few pictures ago I talked about my not so perfect plan to get the Moon rising at this location with the Tetons... thus the title.

Milky Way - Martin's Beach, California.

This time of year you have to get up early to get the Milky Way good as it happens best between 3-5am in late April. Clear sky's finally arrived, along with moonless light pollution. I finally got to test out my new lens.

The Cotopaxi Volcano on a moonless night, sometime this past summer.

Saunders County, Nebraska

Another in my series of rural Nebraska churches photographed at night with the Milky Way. It's surprising how many nice old church buildings are in rural Nebraska. Most seem to be in areas where light pollution is low enough to be able to see the Milky Way on a clear moonless night.

I start watching the weather forecasts closely looking for a clear night when it starts to be in the portion of the month of the new moon. It seems like there might only be one or two such nights a month. It looked like this night was going to be the only one in May and it didn't look completely promising. But I started out around 9 pm to drive here. The farther I went the cloudier it got. I decided I would at least get pictures of the church. After getting those I started driving home and the farther south I went the clearer the sky got so when I got to Lincoln I kept going south to get away from the light pollution. I stopped about 20 miles south of Lincoln to take the Milky Way photos - about 50 miles from the church - but at least they were taken on the same night!

The building is an HDR bracketed exposure composite of 4 photos put together in Lightroom and the sky is a composite of 10 photos taken at 15 seconds, ISO 3200, for noise reduction. The sky photos were composited in Photoshop and the overall picture was composited in Photoshop.

I see you again I believe, in a sleepless night

Just by closing my eyes, blinding myself from the sky

But I have to get used to it, far from you I fall asleep

Every image tells a story but when viewing this image you'd never guess how it came to be.

I was on a mission to get to the North Algodones Dunes Wilderness in Southern California on the Mexican border before Sunset... I left Phoenix Az. early enough, I thought, to drive the 211 miles, but I had only been there one other time and I thought I would have plenty of time to shoot the Sunset and then some...I was a bit off in my calculation.

I barely made it in time to capture just a few images before the Sun was gone and I was left standing there in darkness. On any other night, like a Moonless night, that would have been fine, but it was a full moon, and the clouds of a storm was moving fast across the desert.

I am happy with the images I was able to capture. Next time, I'll make sure I have plenty of time to travel the two-lane, winding road to get there.
