Monument Valley

Utah

This massive monument in Rome dominates the neighborhood and is visible from literally everywhere nearby. In honor of Victor Emanuel II, the first King of a recently unified Italy, crowned in 1861. Image: Italy 2025_0944

Monument Valley is one of my favorite places to go, especially since there are so many different angles you can photograph it from. Here's a spot you may have not seen before. A little storm was moving through the area right when the setting sun began to break through. It was really windy, sand was flying everywhere, but the light was so worth it!

RogueOlympics is nearing its conclusion and for the 7th week our prompt was “Encounter”. I revisited the Atlantis theme and had fun creating a sunken temple and small submersible scooter. The scene uses exactly 101 elements.

My thanks to Nick and Linda suggesting that I may find it interesting to visit to see and photograph

An amazing tree. Known locally as the Ficus de Los Mazones, it’s a centuries-old tree recognised for its monumental size and ecological importance Located in Almoradí, within the Vega Baja del Segura región.The Fig Tree is protected by local authorities as part of Spain’s catalog of singular or monumental trees. It has become a symbol of the Almoradí countryside (huerta), representing the region’s deep agricultural roots and connection to the land. The tree was planted over 100 years ago on the large estate owned by the Mazones family hense its name today.

From the Tyin area in Jotunheimen. I had just ruined my Lee Little Stopper (6 stops) due to that my tripod fell. So I had to rely on my Big Stopper (10 stops) to make the water smooth. A blend of two exposures. Ground + sky.

I've lived in Washington DC almost 20 years and I've visited the National Mall dozens of times, but I'd never been to the top of the Washington Monument until last weekend. It was quite an experience. Cherry Blossoms in bloom and a kite festival on the Mall brought HUGE crowds to the area, but it was worth the effort. The views from 500-ft were unique and spectacular.

This shot is looking west; you can see the WWII Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Reflecting Pool (drained at this time), Constitution Gardens to the right, the Potomac River and Rosslyn, Virginia beyond.

ZZZZzzzap!

The existing design of the Piazza del Campidoglio and the surrounding palazzi was created by Renaissance artist and architect Michelangelo Buonarroti in 1536–1546. At the height of his fame, he was commissioned by the Farnese Pope Paul III, who wanted a symbol of the new Rome to impress Charles V, who was expected in 1538. This offered him the opportunity to build a monumental civic plaza for a major city as well as to reestablish the grandeur of Rome. Michelangelo's first designs for the piazza and remodeling of the surrounding palazzi date from 1536. His plan was formidably extensive. He accentuated the reversal of the classical orientation of the Capitoline, in a symbolic gesture turning Rome’s civic center to face away from the Roman Forum and instead in the direction of Papal Rome and the Christian church in the form of St. Peter’s Basilica. This full half circle turn can also be seen as Michelangelo’s desire to address the new, developing section of the city rather than the ancient ruins of the past. An equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius was to stand in the middle of the piazza set in a paved oval field. Michelangelo was required to provide a setting for the statue and to bring order to an irregular hilltop already encumbered by two crumbling medieval buildings set at an acute angle to one another. The Palazzo del Senatore was to be restored with a double outer stairway, and the campanile moved to the center axis of the palace. The Palazzo dei Conservatori was also to be restored, and a new building, the so-called Palazzo Nuovo, built at the same angle on the north side of the piazza to offset the Conservatori, creating a trapezoidal piazza. A wall and balustrade were to be built at the front of the square, giving it a firm delineation on the side facing the city. Finally, a flight of steps was to lead up to the enclosed piazza from below, further accentuating the central axis.

One of the many views one can find high atop Scotts Bluff National Monument which rises 800 feet above the North Platte River valley adjacent to Gering and Scottsbluff, Nebraska. I've traveled past on numerous occasions in previous years, both on US26 and on NE highway 71, but was never able to stop and explore until my recent drive to Amarillo, Texas. I was happy I made the short detour to visit, even on a very windy late February day (2-26-2025), for although impressive from the surrounding region, the views on top were equally beautiful.

This is Macedonia Square -Plostad Makedonija, the modern and largest square of Skopje, regarded as the heart of North Macedonia’s capital. It is a lively meeting place where locals and tourists gather, surrounded by shops, cafés, hotels, and historic streets. At the center of the square stands the imposing equestrian statue and fountain, officially named “Warrior on a Horse”. It almost certainly represents Alexander the Great, although his name is not explicitly mentioned due to political sensitivities with Greece. Greece considers Alexander the Great an essential part of its cultural heritage. The monument rises 22 meters high, including its pedestal and fountain. Around the base are smaller statues depicting his soldiers, while fountains and evening light shows make the entire scene spectacular. Across the square are numerous other statues and monuments, many of them equestrian, representing Macedonian heroes, historical figures, and rulers. These are part of the Skopje 2014 project, designed to give the city center a monumental appearance. With the silhouette of Mount Vodno and the Millennium Cross visible in the background, the square offers a striking blend of modern city life and national pride. It is the main stage for major events, concerts, and national celebrations.

Macedonia Square is the vibrant heart of Skopje, where history and modern city life meet. At its center rises the massive equestrian fountain known as “Warrior on a Horse”. Surrounding the statue are monuments to Macedonian heroes and rulers, part of the Skopje 2014 project that gave the city a grand, monumental look. The square is both a gathering place for locals and tourists and the main stage for festivals, concerts, and national celebrations.

Piercing candid eye contact street photography from Glasgow, Scotland. Captured in front of the monument and statue to Wellington, who is always wearing a traffic cone, I am mesmerised by this guy's expression. To me one half of his face appears to be angry and the other half appears to be curious. Thank you all for supporting my street photography.

Location

Edinburgh (Scotland): North Bridge.

Subject

One of the most famous topics in jokes and cartoons is that of the bird upon a statue's head. This topic is not imaginary: birds really like to perch on statues, and especially on its heads. The King's Own Scottish Borderers Memorial, placed on the North Bridge in Edinburgh, is no exception. When I went to see the monument the bird was there, of course on the highest head. Aside from the problems of dirt, this is a really funny scene. The bird seems to provoke the serious soldier below who cannot move, while the soldier's expression, showing proud dignity, makes the situation paradoxical.
