Roughly 100 km north of the polar circle in southwest Greenland lies the Arctic Circle Trail. This long distance trail stretches for 170 km from the international airport of Greenland in Kangerlussuaq to Greenland’s second largest city Sisimiut. During the summer months from June to September, the trail is free of snow and offers a spectacular hike from the inland to Greenland’s coast. Except for a few cabins and one bridge over the biggest river the trail offers no luxuries, not even cell phone reception. The landscape along the path is very diverse, changing with each kilometre one comes closer to the coast.
The international airport at Kangerlussuaq enjoys around 300 clear-sky days per year, so the weather should be good, and the trail starts by following an easy tarmac and dirt road. Beyond the research station at Kellyville, the trail is simply a narrow path across empty tundra dotted with lakes. If you plan to walk from hut to hut, then the route will take maybe nine days, unless stages are doubled-up. Using a tent offers greater flexibility, and some trekkers complete the route in as little as a week. Huts are located at Hundesø, Katiffik, The Canoe Centre, Ikkattook, Eqalugaarniarfik, Innajuattok, Nerumaq and Kangerluarsuk Tulleq. Youth hostels and hotels are located at the terminal points of Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut.
There is the option to use a free kayak to paddle all day along the large lake of Amitsorsuaq, rather than walk along its shore. There are only a handful of kayaks, and if they are all moored at the ‘wrong’ end of the lake, then walking is the only option.
The trail is often low-lying, below 500ft (150m), but climbs on occasions over 1300ft (400m), notably around Ikkattook, Iluliumanersuup Portornga and Qerrortusuk Majoriaa. There are a handful of river crossings whose difficulty depends on melt-water and rainfall. These are difficult early in the season, but much easier to ford later. The largest river, in Ole’s Lakseelv valley, has a footbridge if required.
The end of the trail is the colourful coastal town of Sisimiut, the second largest town in Greenland, with a population of only 5500. Weather at this end of the trail is basically a 50/50 lottery between wet and dry days. There are flights back to Kangerlussuaq, though very rarely, trekkers have been known to walk back.

I returned to the deep north once more in August, this time to hike and enjoy the Arctic Circle Trail, most likely the most well-known long-distance path in Greenland.
We started in Kangerlussuaq and found ourselves in Sisimiut after nine days, having hiked 180km in total. The weather was perfect except a rainy second day, which we luckily solved by staying in a caravan-like hut at the Hundesø lake.
Although the trail itself may not be as scenic as Icelandic Laugavegurinn or Hornstrandir area, or mountainous areas in northern Sweden, the isolation, freedom and sense of free space are incomparable - one meets fellow trekkers only occasionally, and some of those encounters may be surprising meetings with local hunters.
It was indeed a special and rewarding time – so much to see!
This is a shot taken during our 7th day on the trail - we started to hike from the Innajuattoq lake and camped in a beautiful valley close to the Nerumaq hill and hut.

Dart is a wild thing, high-spirited & with a lot of go. Runs hard, swims fast. Sometimes headstrong in training. But she also has a sweet, affectionate side, & I find her soft gaze quite irresistible. (Soft, but still lively---)

Ollie's 34 months old, just two months shy of 3 years! Very hard to believe that so much time has passed and that soon we'll be celebrating his third birthday. Where's our baby gone and who's this articulate, inquisitive, sometimes whiny little boy who's taken his place?
Recently he's developed the ability to actually listen, and responds with things like, "Ok" or "Sure". He's gotten less shy with strangers and loves to just talk to random people on the street. Or like today he ran to the Italian bakery and went inside all by himself and started talking to them about what he wanted. He also loves to run, and we race each other down the sidewalk.
He still loves the fire station, but now will just chat with the guys out front about everything and anything. He loves Minna and when we pick him up at school he runs over and snuggles with her and rubs her hair. He loves to rub her hair and talks about all the things he'll teach her, like how he's going to teach her to read soon, because he's going to read very soon he says.
He's looking forward to our upcoming trip to Europe and talks about our trip to Mexico in early March all the time. He's generally happy but the lack of naps on school days takes its toll and he's more prone to tantrums. I thought we'd missed that phase since he's almost 3 but I guess he's a late bloomer when it comes to tantrums and crying fits.
Also: He can crack eggs all by himself! And he's getting to be a really good baker. And he's starting to make jokes with language, like we call Minna "Cinnaminna" and he said he was going to call her "Baking Soda Minna"! Or "Vanilla Minna"!
He's a pretty grown-up seeming kid, the same sweetness is there but now there's so much capability! Most things he says he can do "all by myself" He emphasizes the "my".

Here we see D390 (52A) with D352 to the left and D258 to the right (both recently transferred from York to HM). There were two Black 5s - 45038 of Stoke and 45059 of Speke plus 9F 92050 (also Speke) on shed. Also York based Brush Type 4 D1998 (47296).

Stanier '5MT' 4-6-0 no.44737 stands in Bank Hall MPD (8K) yard in July 1966. She only lasted another 5 months, being withdrawn in January 1967 after only 17 years service. She was to be broken up by Cashmore's, Newport.

The Mobile Emergency Room is a project by Thierry Geoffroy/Colonel, a participating artist of the Maldives Pavilion working with art formats developed around the notion of emergency.
Emergency Room is a format providing space for artists to engage in urgent debates, address societal dysfunctions and express emergencies in the now, today, before it is too late. Geoffroy’s approach allows immediate artistic intervention and displaces the contemporary to the status of delayed comment on yesterday’s world.
Taking as point of departure climate change and the Maldives, Geoffroy developed a scenario of disappearance and translated actual emergencies and hospitality needs into artistic interventions. In this context he activated his penetration format in order to transform “rigid exhibition spaces” into “elastic and generous exhibition spaces”.
An intervention facilitated by curator Christine Eyene, the Mobile Emergency Room was set up at the Zimbabwe Pavilion during the opening week of the biennale with the hospitality of commissioner Doreen Sibanda and curator Raphael Chikukwa. The first pieces presented in this room consisted in Geoffroy’s tent and an installation by Polish artist Christian Costa. Since then it has been animated online and has extended from being a space for artists expressing emergencies about climate change, to encompassing various emergency topics.
From 24 to 28 August, Geoffroy was in Venice collaborating with Danish artists Nadia Plesner, Mads Vind Ludvigsen, who created new work everyday, raising various emergencies and concerns, with a daily change of exhibition (“passage”) at 3.00 pm. For his last day in Venice, Geoffroy addressed the Syrian situation.
The work produced during this intervention is displayed until 30 September. The presentation is based on Geoffroy's concept of "Delay Museum" where art created for past emergencies is exhibited, while new work enters the Mobile Emergency Room.

Photos taken for work of an assembly at Hubbell Elementary School to kick-off Black History Month, and a month-long series of events. Today was a school assembly featuring the Bridges2Harmony gospel choir from their next door neighbors at Roosevelt High School.
Dearest Madrigal,
This has been an amazing month for you. You've started learning new words left and right, and for your linguist parents, this is pretty much the most thrilling thing ever!
Your favorite words right now are "ball" (that's been a favorite from the very beginning),"apple/elbow" (it sounds the same when you say them, but it's always clear from context which you mean), and "bobo" (bellybutton). You also LOVE saying "bye bye" (actually, you say "bye bye bye"...mama teases that you belong in a boy band) to pretty much everything, with a slight preference towards saying it to inanimate objects (puddles, swings, etc) rather than people. You've learned the names of all three of our kitties (or "titties", as you call them...this makes us giggle). You're really good at "nina", you say "nen" for Ren, and poor Stimpy gets called "peepee". "peepee the titty". Ha! Poor buddy.
You've got more adventurous about eating in this past month, and you'll now eat cheese in forms other than shredded, which is nice! You still love guacamole and yogurt a LOT, and peanut butter, too.
This month you've gotten REALLY good at stairs, too - as long as there's a railing that you can reach, you can go up and down them all by yourself just fine! You're also getting good at climbing up the slides at the playground - you're so strong!
For the Summer Solstice, we got you a new Eric Carle book called "From Head to Toe", and you LOVE reading it. You're getting really good at imitating all of the actions.
You love going to the playground in your stroller, and your favorite thing is the swings. You also like helping mama do dishes and clean up in general. You're getting pretty good at using rags to wipe up messes.
In this picture, you're wearing the new outfit that your grandma and grandpa (mama's parents) sent you. You are SO STINKING CUTE in it!
We love you so incredibly much, sweet pea! You are growing into such a cool little kid and we're so delighted that we get to help you do that. Your snuggles are the BEST.

Dropped by Meredith Middle School in Des Moines to take some photos of teacher Johanys Alvarez's Spanish class holding a lawn party as part of their Hispanic Heritage Month lessons to enjoy some paletas and fútbol (and an impromptu game of invisible net vóleibol).
Dearest Maddy,
Hands in your mouth, a star shirt, and a skort over top of your pants - yep, that's our girl! You insisted on this getup and it was so adorable on you. And you're working on those eye teeth and boy, they've been rough - you're constantly chewing on your hands (and biting mama while nursing - ouch!) and you request relief by saying "Advil teeth better?" Poor kiddo!
Only one month until you're 2!! Wow. It's hard to believe...you're growing up so fast! I can definitely see where the "terrible twos" reputation comes from - You've been really working hard at testing boundaries, and doing a lot more hitting than you used to - this is something we really need to work on, sweetie. It's not kind or respectful! You're getting so big, and it's hard for mama to redirect you sometimes - our scale is broken at the moment, but you've clearly gained weight since the last time we weighed you, and you were already 30 pounds then!
Your verbal skills are taking off, and you routinely put together multi-word sentences (with consistent grammatical patterns to them...oh yes, your linguist parents delight in figuring out "Maddy-grammar"). Your vocabulary is also growing by leaps and bounds. SO MANY WORDS!
Mama and daddy have been working to "prepare the environment" at home so that it is more accessible to you, like it is at your Montessori school. We got a couple of large placemats that you use as work rugs, and you love showing us how you roll them up and put them away. It's so impressive to watch! You really want to do everything yourself these days, and we're trying to make that possible for you!
You're getting really good at your puzzles, and at things like zippers and snaps. You are very dedicated about practicing something when you want to be able to master it, and you'll even tell us that's what you're doing ("Practicing!").
You LOVE reading. Some days that's pretty much all we do, for hours and hours. We read your books (sometimes you want to turn the pages, sometimes you quite forcefully put the book in mama's hands and make her turn them), both board books and books with actual paper pages, and we also "read" a lot of catalogs. You love looking though LL Bean, Title 9, and Mini Boden, and telling mama all about what you see.
This month we went down to Rhinebeck. It was your second time there! You were adorable, if a bit of a handful (especially in the hotel room, my goodness!). You've picked up a new habit of shrieking at the top of your lungs (you sound like a happy seagull) - it is so unbelievably loud, and you regaled us with that almost nonstop during the 5 hour drives to and from Rhinebeck. Oh, how we hope you've stopped doing that before our next big drive (at Thanksgiving).
You also really love singing - you ask mama to sing for you a lot, and often request specific songs. Edelweiss is a favorite, as are "Baa Baa Black Sheep" and "ABCs" - but even though those last two have the same melody, I don't dare sing the one if you've asked for the other, because you KNOW, and you don't like it! You also really don't like it when mama yawns while she's singing (mama's TIRED, sweet pea!)
You're growing into such a cool kid, Miss Madrigal Alice. We love you so very much, darling girl.
Gabe turned 13 months old today. He is always on the move, pulls up on everything, and cruises around on the furniture. Gabe desperately wants to play with his big brother, but Jack won’t share his toys or play with him. Gabe has also really enjoyed eating solid foods and now has quite the appetite.
He weighs 20 pounds, and is 30.5 inches long.
Likes: crawling up the stairs, green vegetables, playing outside, pulling up on things
Dislikes: going to sleep on his own, car rides longer than 20 minutes, when Jack won’t play with him
