Marilyn Monroe face character at Universal Studios Singapore. Marilyn appears in her iconic white dress from the 1955 movie, The Seven Year Itch.

French postcard by J.G., Paris, no. 603/5. Photo: André de Dienes.

Before Marilyn Monroe became the most famous Hollywood icon, she was Norma Jeane Baker, a model with a girl-next-door appeal. The photo above is part of a series of pin-up shots taken by Hungarian American photographer André de Dienes at Long Island’s Tobay Beach in 1949. These famous pictures were taken a week after Monroe’s even more famous nude pictures by Tom Kelley.

André de Dienes (1913-1985) had met Baker in 1945, when the 19 years-old was a model on the books of Emmeline Snively’s Blue Book Model Agency. Snively told Dienes of Norma Jeane, and suggested her for his project of photographing artistic nudes. In his memoirs Dienes described the first time he met Monroe saying "...it was as if a miracle had happened to me. Norma Jeane seemed to be like an angel. I could hardly believe it for a few moments. An earthly, sexy-looking angel! Sent expressly for me!".

Why is it that when you meet a pet that appears to not care at all about you, that he's the one you become most attached to?

We had a very rough weekend with our little buddy. Emotionally it's been a rollercoaster. We're trying to make his last days with us as painfree and pleasant as possible.

I never thought I could learn much from a cat. I was wrong, thanks for the lessons buddy.

Grand Army of the Republic Memorial at the Monroe Street Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.

In May 1871, William Creighton Post No. 69 of the Grand Army of the Republic announced it would erect a memorial to honor those Ohio Citians who died in the American Civil War. The $1,000 momument was to be made of Scotch Granite, a coarse-grained, brilliant red granite. The shaft alone was to be 15 feet high. Each side of the memorial was to have a representation (carved or affixed in bronze is unclear) of each branch of the Civil War military: Infantry (a sentinel on duty beside a tent); Artillery, (a cannoner in position beside a cannon, with rammer in hand); Cavalry, (a horse and dismounted rider); and Naval (a Mississiopi river gunboat). A bronze eagle would surmount the shaft, and the names of the dead were to be engraved on the faces.

Although funds were raised, apparently they fell short. The final monument is a plaint Scotch Granite shaft, pedestal, and base placed atop a grey granite plinth. A bronze plaque, dedicated "To Our Fallen Comrades", is attached to a concrete block at the base of the memorial. On the northwest-facing side of the memorial, three names are engraved on the shaft.

The date of the monument's erection is not known.

Samuel P. Lord, one of the 57 investors in the Connecticut Land Company, was alloted land in the Connecticut Western Reserve along the west bank of the Cuyahoga River. His son, Richard Lord, emigrated to the area in 1818. With his brother-in-law, Josiah Barber, he founded Brooklyn Township on June 1, 1818.

Residents in the area began burials at the site of the cemetery began about 1818. In January 1836, Lord and Barber sold 6 acres of land to the township for $160 for use as a cemetery. Ohio City was incorporated from part of Brooklyn Township on March 3, 1836, and the cemetery became part of the new city. The burying ground was called Ohio City Cemetery. Ohio City was annexed by the city of Cleveland on June 5, 1854. Title to the cemetery now transferred to the city of Cleveland, which renamed it the West Side Cemetery. By 1879, the cemetery had expanded to 32.5 acres.

This was Cleveland's only graveyard on the west side until West Park Cemetery opened in 1900, after which the grounds became more commonly known as the Monroe Street Cemetery. Monroe Street was Cleveland's second-busiest cemetery in the first half of the 20th century. As the cemetery filled and other, modern cemeteries became available, burials fell off and the cemetery fell into some disrepair.

As of 2022, Monroe Street Cemetery is 13.63 acres in size, making it one of the 10 largest cemeteries in Northeast Ohio. There are approximately 31,500 burials there. The cemetery was closed to new burials in 2010, except for those who had already purchased and had room in plots.
