Monastery of Santa Maria de Flor da Rosa, now the Pousada Mosteiro Crato

The Mosteiro de Flor da Rosa is considered to be the most important example of a fortified monastery in the Iberian Peninsula; it is now a hotel in the Pousadas of Portugal chain.

This monastery is made up of three distinct buildings: the Gothic-style fortress church, a gothic pavilion with 16th-century alterations, and the other conventual premises.

The whole set has been altered throughout the centuries, namely in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and later in the twentieth century, where there was a greater concern for preservation of the original Gothic plan. In fact, in the time of King D. Manuel I, the monastic space was enlarged to a greater number of rooms, turning it into a Royal Palace, with the great earthquake of 1755 and a devastating storm in 1897.

The Monastery of the Order of the Hospital of Flor da Rosa was classified as a National Monument in 1910 and in the 1940s, restoration work began. Later, in 1991, work began on conversion to a Pousada de Portugal, by architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça, opening to the public in 1995.

Kintsvisi Monastery (Georgian: įƒ§įƒ˜įƒœįƒ¬įƒ•įƒ˜įƒ”įƒ˜, Qinc'visi) is a Georgian Orthodox monastery in the Shida Kartli region, eastern Georgia, 10 kilometers from the town Kareli, on a forested slope of a high mountain of the Dzama valley.

The Kintsvisi Monastery complex consists of three churches, of uncertain origin. The central (main) central church dedicated to St Nicholas is thought to date to the early 13th century, in what is generally regarded as a "golden age" of the Georgian monarchy. A very small chapel standing next to it is dedicated to St George, and dates from around the same time.

The oldest church, dedicated to St Mary dates from the 10-11th centuries, but is mostly in ruins.

The site is currently listed by the World Monuments Fund as a field project.

Rila Monastery. "Rila Monastery was founded in the 10th century by St John of Rila, a hermit canonized by the Orthodox Church." Rebuilt in 1834-1862.

Rila Monastery became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

This monastery -- Snagov Monastery -- is located about 25 miles north of Bucharest in Ilfov County. (It's close enough that I'm including it as a Bucharest album.)

So what's the deal with Snagov Monastery? Honestly, I don't know. It seems there's no consensus on much of anything here, other than that the monastery exists. Nobody is sure when it was built, exactly, and that may have part to do with the reason it was built...if you choose to believe that, too.

This is (or not?) Vlad Tepes's final resting place. (For sake of argument, I'll say it is, though...who knows?) Vlad's English sobriquet is Vlad the Impaler (Tepes in Romanian), and he was...rather cruel. By the time of his death, he had many enemies, and it seems he was beheaded as his form of demise. This monastery was possibly built Vlad himself (at his orders, that is), or at the request of his grandfather.

Vlad's "tomb" in the middle of the church floor. Well...as he had a lot of enemies, one thought is that his burial spot was hidden. Some say he was -- and still is -- buried here, but deep under the floor, and animal bones were buried above him to throw off anyone who found the location. Well...the place was excavated, animal bones were found, and (I guess?) they didn't dig deeper. Short answer...nobody knows and it serves tourism's interests not to confirm. I'll leave it at that.

As for the aesthetics of the monastery, it's a standard Greek Orthodox church on the inside. That means...lots of paintings covering 100% of the wall. (This small monastery, though, is not a great example of Romanian churches; the churches up in Transylvania at Maramures are all much better representations. The painted monasteries there are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Having said all of that, if you're in Bucharest, this is worth seeing just for the fun of it. Day trips are cheap and easy.

Drepung Monastery is located at the foot of Mount Gephel about three miles from Lhasa, and is one of the great three university monasteries of Tibet.

From the Wikipedia Commons - one of my favorite images. It's a monastery.

"The beautifully restored Rommersdorf Abbey in the district of Heimbach-Weis should not be missed when visiting Neuwied. The former Premonstratensian monastery combines architectural elements of the Romanesque and Gothic periods and is regarded as a jewel among the medieval buildings in the region.

Also well worth seeing is the garden, laid out in part according to baroque originals. Around the abbey visitors will find contrasting gardens and woodlands that have been left in their natural state.

The abbey is the setting for popular cultural events. In spring the town plays host to the cloister concerts and in summer presents the festival of open-air theatre as well as the children's theatre festival."

Chrysoskalitissa Monastery is a 17th-century Orthodox Christian monastery located on the island of Crete, Greece. Located on the south-west coast of the island, in the municipal unit Innachori, it lies some 72 kilometres south-west of Chania. Built up on rocks some 35 metres high, it overlooks the Libyan Sea. According to local tradition, the name of the monastery is derived from one of the ninety steps which lead there, which is said to be golden and visible only to devout Christians. The monastery is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and the Dormition of Virgin Mary.
