The Cistercian monastery of Vyšší Brod is located about 30 km to the south of Český Krumlov, on the right bank of the Vltava river. The monastery church with its adjacent buildings was constructed step-by-step from the mid 13th century and it was finished in the later half of the 14th century. The oldest part is the one floor sacristy dated about 1270.

The literal meaning of Enchey Monastery is the "Solitary Monastery".Its sacredness is attributed to the belief that Khangchendzonga and Yabdean – the protecting deities – reside in this monastery. As, according to a legend, Guru Padmasambhava had subdued the spirits of the Khangchendzonga, Yabdean and Mahākāla here. In view of this legend, the religious significance of Enchey Monastery is deeply ingrained in every household in Gangtok. It is also believed that these powerful deities always fulfil the wishes of the devotees

Kvatakhevi is a medieval Georgian Orthodox monastery in Shida Kartli, Georgia.

It dates to the 12th-13th century. The building has two portals, one to the south and one to the west. The façades are covered with finely hewn white stone squares. Historically, Kvatakhevi was also a literary center where several manuscripts were copied. It also possessed a treasure with many artifacts of medieval Georgian jewelry.

The monastery was significantly damaged during Timur's invasions of Georgia in the 14th century, but was subsequently repaired, more completely under the patronage of Prince Ivane Tarkhan-Mouravi in 1854. A belfry was added in 1872.

Novodevichy Convent also known as Bogoroditse-Smolensky Monastery (Russian: Новоде́вичий монасты́рь, Богоро́дице-Смоле́нский монасты́рь) is probably the best-known cloister of Moscow.

Its name, sometimes translated as the New Maidens' Monastery, was devised to differ from an ancient maidens' convent in the Moscow Kremlin.

Unlike other Moscow cloisters, it has remained virtually intact since the 17th century. In 2004, it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

About Selime Monastery

Selime is one of the biggest monasteries in Cappadocia. Cut into the soft tuff rocks, it contains many caves for all the different needs of a medieval life in a monastery. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Selime Rock Monastery was carved out the rock by Christian monks in the 13th century. A steep climb is the only way to access it.

The region of Cappadocia (Capadokya) is located in central Turkey, and is the setting for one of the strangest landscapes in the world. The deep valleys and soaring rock formations are volcanic rock formations, slowing eroding away to create the strange "Fairy Chimneys" (so called because locals thought they were so magical and extraordinary that only fairies could have created them). Many of these fairy chimneys have been hollowed out by industrious ancient people, who created homes, chapels, tombs and pigeon houses from the soft, carve-able rock. They also tunneled below, creating underground cities, some 8 stories down.

Perched at the western edge of Mount Carmel, high above the Mediterranean and the coastal city of Haifa, is Stella Maris Monastery and church.

The name of the 19th-century monastery — Latin for “Star of the Sea” — refers not to the magnificent view, but rather to an early title accorded Mary, the mother of Jesus.

The monastery is the world headquarters of a Catholic religious order of friars and nuns, the Carmelites.

The order had its origins at the end of the 12th century when St Berthold, a Frenchman who had gone to the Holy Land as a Crusader, had a vision of Christ denouncing the evil done by soldiers.

Bistrita Monastery is an Orthodox monastery located in Bistrita village, north of the Costesti Commune, in Vâlcea County.

It is important to sepecify the location, since there is also a completely different Mănăstirea Bistrita located in the Neamtz county, in the north-east part of Romania.

Initially build between 1492 and 1494 by the Craiovesti boyars, it was destroyed in 1509 by Mihnea cel Rău and subsequently rebuilt between 1515 and 1519 by the Craiovesti.

The monastery was rebuilt for a third time between 1846 and 1855, following the damage sustained during the 1838 earthquake.

The new, big church that you can see today was painted by the famous painter Gheorghe Tattarescu.

The first documents of the monastery are preserved in the "decree of donation" dated 16 March 1494 belonging to Vlad Voda.

Bistrita Monastery has been destroyed up to its foundations by Mihnea Voda 1509.

A contemporary document mentions that Mihnea Voda Craiovesti fighting, "and their monastery, which they had done evil pre Bistritii have vanished from the foundation."

It was rebuilt during Neagoe between 1515 - 1519 by noblemen throughout Craiovesti.

The foundation is still preserved today Craiovesti infirmary church (1520-1521).

The church is dedicated to the Transfiguration, what we call the "The Change of the Face" and it has an impressive interior fresco of late Paleologue tradition.

History

The great Ban of Oltenia, Barbu Craiovescu, purchased from Constantinople the most precious treasure of the shrine - the relics of Saint Gregory Decapolite.

His holy body has never rotted and turned bearing great gifts: cure bodily and spiritual diseases, bring rain during drought, thus making the shrine to be assaulted by many pilgrims.

Legend says that the holy relics were bought from a Turk with the gold of Craiovescu Barbu.

The turk seller hoped that he will get a significant amount of gold, equivalent to the weight of relics.

But put on a plate, the saint indeed weighed very little, so he got just a pittance.

This make the Turk exclaim: "See, see how the Christian choose Christian!"

It is also known as 1763 when the plague engulfed Bucharest, the coffin with the relics of Saint Gregory Decapolite was brought in front of the Metropolitan Church and prayers held.

Soon after, the plague began to receed and disappeared forever.

Prince Constantine in 1656, donated a silver shrine in the holy relics to be placed.

In 1683 Constantin Brancoveanu Monastery donate a bell, a priceless object that weighs 800 kg, a chandelier decorated with ostrich eggs, and the miracle working icon of St. Anna.

After the earthquake of 1810, the place is seriously affected, during the reign of Gheorghe Barbu Stirbei Bibescu

Between 1846-1855 the monastery had to be rebuilt.

The painting new church, built in Gothic, not normal Orthdox style, was executed by George Tattarescu in 1850.

Kintsvisi Monastery (Georgian: ყინწვისი, Qinc'visi) is a Georgian Orthodox monastery in the Shida Kartli region, eastern Georgia, 10 kilometers from the town Kareli, on a forested slope of a high mountain of the Dzama valley.

The Kintsvisi Monastery complex consists of three churches, of uncertain origin. The central (main) central church dedicated to St Nicholas is thought to date to the early 13th century, in what is generally regarded as a "golden age" of the Georgian monarchy. A very small chapel standing next to it is dedicated to St George, and dates from around the same time.

The oldest church, dedicated to St Mary dates from the 10-11th centuries, but is mostly in ruins.

The site is currently listed by the World Monuments Fund as a field project.

The Alahan Monastery, Koja Kalessi, is a one hour walking distance from the village of Geçimli, located in the province of Mersin, Turkey. The site is being considered to be put on the World Heritage list of sites who have "outstanding universal value" to the world.

The Christian monastery at Alahan is located in the mountains of Isauria in Southern Asia Minor near Mut on the road between Karaman and Silifke. Residing at an altitude of 4,000ft, it stands 3,000 ft over the Calycadnus valley. Construction started during the second half of the fifth century under Emperor Leo I and was finished by Emperor Zeno, yet by the seventh century it was abandoned. Its remains include two churches, one (The East Church) is extremely well preserved, a baptistery, a colonnaded runway running the full length of the site, and a couple of subsidiary buildings, plus some old caves and graves. The complex may be funded by Emperor Zeno (474-491), who was from the region. The buildings stretches along the side of the mountain and covers an area of 30x200 meters. It is quite possible that the monastery official, and monks lived in the houses surrounding the complex. The monastery stands as the finest achievement of native Isaurian stonemasons and sculptors. Alahan is a key site in the history of early Byzantine architecture, half a century before the great achievements of Anicia Juliana and Justinian in Constantinople.

In 2012, Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Mersin Governorship started restoration work on the site because of its history and heritage.
