This unique single decade rosary or chaplet is made from shells gathered from the Island of Molokai. I wrap each tiny shell with sterling silver. There is a lovely Saint Damien image on one side and a delicate crucifix on the other. It has a sterling clasp so it can be worn as a bracelet, carried in your pocket or perhaps hung on the rear view mirror of your car. It measures 8 inches.
The Hail Mary shells are laiki kua 'ula and the Our Father shell is momi ke'oke'o waha 'ele'ele. This variety of shell is known worldwide as Ni'ihau shells as they are commonly found on that island. We also have them here on Molokai. Made with Aloha !

Kamakou Preserve, Moloka'i
Waikolu Valley was where the first lepers, that were banned to Kalawao peninsula (Kalaupapa), were off loaded in 1866 to live their lives in isolation. Kalawao is a dry area and water for the growing settlement was obtained from Waialeia Valley approximately a mile walk from the settlement. Water had to be carried from a spring in this valley. In the late 30’s military jeeps were used to bring the water down to the settlement.
Grave site of Father Damien 1840-1889
Fr. Damien was the lone priest sent to the leper colony of Kalaupapa along with some Catholic nuns. Fr. Damien built houses, churches, made coffins, dug graves and tended to the spiritual needs of 3,000 lepers in the colony. Fr. Damien contracted leprosy and died in 1889. The Island of Moloka'i

Molokai Hawaii... land is abused by ranch owners who own 100.000 acres and let the golf course die, hotel rot and shut down gas station and movie theatre.. to punish locals for not allowing development of last sacred place on the island
This is where you turn east from Molokai State Highway 460 (Mauna Loa Highway) to reach the Homelani Cemetery and the start of the Maunahui-Makakupaia Trail. This trail is also known as the Kamakou Forest Preserve Road (on Google Maps) or Forest Reserve Road (on some other maps) or just Maunahui Road (everywhere else). The picture is facing north along the highway with the road/trail on the right.
