The full page 2 from Melbourne newspaper 'The Sun' from Saturday November 22, 1969 featuring articles within the newspaper on the Apollo 12 Return To Earth and its crew members Charles Conrad Jr., Richard F. Gordon Jr., and Alan L. Bean.

Featured are articles about the completion of the Lunar phase of the Apollo 12 Mission, with the Command Service Module ‘Yankee Clipper’ breaking lunar orbit at 6:43AM that morning Melbourne time. Also reported was the deliberate crashing of the now empty Lunar Module ‘Intrepid’ into the lunar surface to prevent it from becoming a danger in space, and also to investigate seismic activity on the Moon. The results were unexpected, with seismic waves lasting half an hour, rather than a few minutes as expected.

Also featured is an article about the continued investigation of the My Lai Massacre, which had occurred in March 1968, but had been covered up until November 1969, when reports of the massacre filtered out to the wider media.

Also featured is an article with a reference to a ‘de Groot’ bid at the official opening of a new bridge at Phillip Island south of Melbourne, with a gentleman dressed as a pirate on a Shetland pony trying to cut the ribbon before being stopped by a policeman. The de Groot reference is to Irish-born Captain Francis Edward de Groot, a former British Army cavalryman and WWI veteran who had joined the ‘New Guard’, and Australian nationalist paramilitary movement aimed at ousting the then New South Wales Labor government of Premier Jack Lang. On March 19, 1932, de Groot managed to disrupt the official opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge when on horseback and in full military uniform with sword attempted to cut the ribbon to open the bridge, upstaging Lang in the process. He faced charges over the incident, though received a light punishment, and was later compensated for wrongful arrest. He died in his native Dublin on April 1, 1969, 7 months before the article was published.
