I was at home this weekend with my family and decided to take pictures of the Merrill home from the “outsiders” perspective. I changed my ISO to 400 for most because it was cloudy, but also had a little bit of sun shining through. I put my white balance to auto to help me automatically balance the color. I had my aperature set to f/11 because there was sun shining on the items I was photographing.
I wanted to capture the color of this bridge as it was the most colorful thing in the park I went to. I also liked the way the light was hitting the Kiwanis Park sign. I tried to capture the contrast of the light blues and the dark shadows in the trees.
For my “Improved Shots,” I wasn’t able to use the same location due to some recent rain we had. So, I chose an alternate location where I knew I would find similar wildflowers. I decided to take the photos closer to sunset keeping in mind the feedback I received regarding lighting. I also tried to pay close attention to clarity.
I was pleased with the results of the improved shots photos. This particular image was my favorite for many reasons. First, regarding details and indicators, for me, the photo possess a bit of magic I was looking for that evening. I love the bits of sunlight shining through the flowers, bringing warmth and cheer. There are a few spots of prisms from the sunrays that made me feel happy when I noticed them in the photos. I also really liked the look of the sky in the background of one photo. I tried to frame the photos in a way that the eye found wonder as the whole photo was taken in. As shape, line, and silhouette were important in my previous photos, I kept those in mind in this grouping. I played more with the angles and point of view, lowering my view even closer to the ground, and backing up to take on a different view.
Going in with specific feedback and spending more time with each photo allowed me to slow down in a sense, which I was appreciative of. I think in life, in general, I am always so busy rushing from task to task and not being as mindful as I would like. This assignment gave me a moment to be fully present in the moment with a mission and spend more time out in nature to soak in the setting sun.
I think there is still room for improvement with the three exposure components, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. I like the idea of creating my own chart to help me better understand the results of the various changes and options. I think another consideration would be using a tripod when I am trying to capture something low to the ground rather than relying on my own balance and steady hand.
This was an area of feedback that I would like to improve on. Trying to get more clarity in the background is still a goal. I think having a tripod or way to steady my hand could certainly help but also learning more technical skills could help with this goal too.
