Made from limestone, Modigliani made about 30 stone carvings of which this is the largest. he borrowed from African masks, Medieval carving and Khmer sculptures, these sources seem to have represented the spiritual expression that he sought to achieve.

The original, "La Belle Romaine," sold in November of 2010 for $68,900,000 at a Sotheby's auction. This one ought to bring something, doncha think?

This rendition is based on a portrait by a favorite artist, Amedeo Modigliani. It is my humble, modern day interpretation of his gorgeous painted portraiture of Lunia Czechovska.

My artist wife Nancy makes, amongst other things, collages using cutout pieces of paper form a wide array of sources. Sometime they are scattered all over her worktable. I occasionally go by and see opportunities for a picture and take liberties with what is available. I rearrange to my liking, then take some pictures. Frequently nothing comes of my efforts, but occasionally I see something worthy of further effort in the computer. This is the result of much manipulation and has ended up with a kind of silk screen looking result. The title came from the one obvious picture that was by the artist Modigliani. Whatcha think?
