Oil paint on canvas by Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920), born Italy, worked italy and France.
This is one of the small group of paintings that Modigliani made of young people. The artist inscribed the work's title on the bottom right of the canvas, identifying the sitter as a 'peasant boy'. However, ther is some doubt over the assuracy of the title. The same model seem to appear in onother painting titled 'The Young Apprentice'. Modigliani had long been influenced by the painter Paul Cezanne (1839-1906). This painting was probably inspired by Cezanne's painting of country workers. Cézanne's subjects were also positioned in the centre of the canvas and painted in mostly blue tones.

if you wanna hear to true story, read on.
Of course Modigliani didn't actually know LOL is. But apparently the dancer model he's portraying has the awesome name of Lola de Valence. And coincidently her beautiful face blocked the 1/4 of her name painted in the background.... Thus the birth of "Madame LOL".
