On this first-time visit to Boston over 30 years ago, I was truly awestruck by the John Hancock Tower that was designed by I.M. Pei and completed in 1976. The 62-storey building remains unsurpassed as the tallest in New England. I love its clean design and how it reflected the scudding clouds.

The sky can sometimes more creative than mankind and even more when they are reflected in mirror glass windows of Novotel Paris Les Halles.

 

Rue Berger

Rue Berger is a 580 meters long street in the 1er arrondissement of Paris in the quartier Halles. Rue Berger starts at 29, boulevard de Sébastopol and ends at 38, rue du Louvre.

It owes its name to Jean-Jacques Berger (1790-1859), prefect of the Seine.

Novotel

Novotel is a French midscale hotel brand owned by Accor. Created in 1967 in France, the company grew into what became the Accor group in 1983, and Novotel remained a pillar brand of Accor's multi-brand strategy. Novotel manages 580 hotels in 65 countries (2023). Since 2010, Novotel also includes the apartment hotel brand Novotel Suites.

 

The first Novotel was launched in Lille, France, in 1967. It was inspired by American motels with comfortable rooms, a restaurant and parking. By 1970, seven Novotel hotels were in operation.

By 1975, Novotel opened 60 hotels in France and 13 in Europe. Novotel bought Mercure in 1975, and Sofitel in 1980. In 1981, Novotel entered the Asian market with the opening of a hotel in Singapore.

Officially opened just one year ago, the mainly mirror glass building is an unfussy but attractive piece of architecture. It serves the barrier island community’s 6,500 residents - a number that is steadily expanding.

We took the ferry to HK central and went up the peak. Unfortunately the Funicular Rail (Peak Tram) was closed so we had to bus up.

Pedestrian bridge is part of the Calvin S. Hamilton Pedway:

Famous for the elevators, the revolving cocktail lounge, the mirror glass exterior, et cetera et cetera, and for being the star of a famous essay by Fredric Jameson on postmodernism.

 

Before I get into that, let me just say that what I currently find interesting about the Westin Bonaventure and the urbanism of this section of Figueroa and Bunker Hill in general are the really complex histories about what was happening with and against modernism from the 1950s through the 1980s, especially in Los Angeles, especially with regards to Bunker Hill, housing, car culture, et cetera.

 

But with the Westin Bonaventure in particular, I'm also interested in visual/formal comparisons with both Prentice Women's Hospital in Chicago (1975), the BMW headquarters in Munich (1968–73), and LaForet Harajuku (1975–80).

(There used to be a lot more examples in Los Angeles of mirror glass facades combined with concrete, but I feel like a lot have been torn down.)

 

Because of its dramatic qualities and because of how Jameson explicated them, people don't really talk about this building in the context of Brutalism, even though that style arguably was just as interested in dramatic effects and complexity. (There's also the totally different social uses of the "main" buildings of each style as well, of course.)

 

Of course, I'm probably just massively ignorant and there are a ton of good books already out there that are full of chapters that explicitly talk about connections between architecture and urban planning in Los Angeles and the UK, with lovely details about Victor Gruen Associates and Milton Keynes and the Barbican and the Glendale Galleria. Even better if they also bring in Metabolism and connections with what was going on in Japan. Particularly since Mori Yoshiko seems a lot more important and successful at building the massive city-in-a-city projects than John Portman, on the whole. Anyway, if so, let me know what they are?

I love this one-of-a-kind spinning roller coaster in the Russia themed area of Europa-Park. The five cylindrical towers with mirror glass are a feast for the eyes as well.

 

Euro-Mir

Euro-Mir is a spinning roller coaster located at Europa-Park in Rust, Germany. Unlike most spinning coasters, however, the cars do not spin freely, but are rotated by motors at set points during the ride. It was designed by Franz Mack and opened in 1997.

The experience is modeled on the Soviet/Russian space station Mir. It consists of five cylindrical towers, with the ride simulating a trip into space and re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. The largest tower, which contains the helical lift hill, is a dodecagon, 28 meters high while the maximum drop of the ride is 86 feet. The ride opened in 1997 and carries 9 trains, each comprising 4 circular spinning cars. Riders are seated back to back in pairs, with a maximum of 16 riders per train.

The attraction's theming was designed by P&P Projects.

Departure to I embodies the development from the youth in the age. The youth represented with multicolored Muranoglas, slate, night-bright glass bricks - everything in motion - everything boundlessly. The easily bent ball represents the age. Formed of events and experiences - in the mirror glass the youth reflects itself - which is borders well-known and enjoyed.

While St. Pete can muster a total population of around 300,000, it is primarily a residential city, with many people crossing The Bay to Tampa for their daily work. It is thus not hugely endowed with commercial towers, the city’s tallest buildings being condos for the most part. One exception is the building commonly identified as the BB&T tower, whose official name is actually First Central Tower. With 17 floors in total, it is a minnow compared with downtown commercial towers in other US cities, but it has been a dominant feature of the St. Pete skyline since it was built in 1984. The mirror glass is typical of that Post-Modern period.

 

First Central Tower is a smaller-scale echo of the 1987 building that was once the BB&T corporate HQ in Winston-Salem NC. That building was designed by Sherman Carter Barnhart.

Using leaded glass, mirror glass and zinc, Mackintosh created these two vertically oriented panels about 1905. No further information was given. This is located in an exhibit of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s (1868-1928) work at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia.

Panes of mirror glass on a Tampa office building enable this reverse image of TECO Line Streetcar System Car #432, happily one that is not covered in a garish advertising wrap. In contrast with the lady advertising the delights of the Tampa YMCA, I found my Happy Hour in the building reflected across the road - Hattricks Sports Bar.
