Buachaille Etive Mor, known simply as the The Buachaille, is a mountain at the head of Glen Etive in the Highlands of Scotland, located near the A82 road when travelling towards Glen Coe.

The Arch of Kamara, Geropotamos Beach, Crete, Greece
WOW, what a gorgeous sunset this was during my week spent on the stunning island of Crete back in April 2019. I somehow stumbled on this arch online while researching another location and I decided to head off an hour or so before sunset to capture it on camera.
I eventually found the makeshift car park (of sorts) and walked the fifteen-minute wander to the edge of the cliff which overlooks this stunning arch formation. Arriving early allowed me to set up in plenty of time and explore the area a little. I fired off some shots before the sunset before moving into my primo position to capture this viewpoint.
I couldn't believe that I was being treated to such wonderful light and conditions and the two clouds top left drifted into place perfectly to add a little interest but it was the rock beneath my feet that I was most entranced with. The curvature of the cliff edge was sublime and a coastal shooter's paradise. I was absolutely in my element and so pleased to have photographed this gorgeous scene.
Trying to find where I had parked my car in the dark was somewhat more challenging though as the terrain was undulating, making visual contact with the flashing indicators of my hired black Audi A3 (which I loved) very difficult indeed. I eventually found it despite my legs being ripped to shreds having navigated my way through sharp, pricky scrubland. I'd say the image was worth it though.

I love visiting one of my favourite little local haunts, the fishing wrecks in Fleetwood.
I have been visiting these wrecks since 2010 and I have seen a change in the landscape here, mostly the wrecks themselves. There are the remains of several fishing vessels but I would say three full size ones remain largely intact, two metal and one wood.
They are positioned by the River Wyre estuary, which is a location full of deep muddy gullies which during a fairly high tide, fill up and spill over with the incoming tide covering all of the land, making it very difficult to navigate your way around without falling into the gullies.
On this particular evening, the sky was crystal clear and the stars shone like Swarovski diamonds and so I could not refuse an opportunity to head out for a few hours alone to capture these wrecks on camera. Sadly the 8.1 metre tide was not nearly high enough to fill even the gullies (you need a 9 metre tide for that at least) but it was magical just being out on my own with nothing but the sounds of the birds flying overhead and the odd plane overhead.

Iceland Photography Workshop

After my ninth visit to Iceland this February, trying to find a fresh approach to photographing a very familiar and well known location is not easy yet that is the challenge that I love to embrace.
My tips for trying to capture an alternative perspective at this location are;
1: Visit in the winter where a wider variety of weather will provide more opportunities to capture something differently
2: Don't be afraid to get your feet wet for that particular shot
3: Go where others choose not to but ensuring that you are safe
4: Step outside of your comfort zone and challenge yourself
5: Predict what equipment you will need when stood in the river. This will reduce your stress levels in trying to sort out your kit in the middle of the river.
6: Have the right camera bag for shooting in water. I use a Mindshift Backlight 26L which opens from the rear allowing me to rotate it around my waist and keep it away from water.
7: Use your tripod as a measuring stick to gauge the depth of the water when wading into it.
8: Ensure you are wearing the right clothing. I wear an insulated pair of Aigle wellies (4mm neoprene). They allow me to stand in the freezing river for up to an hour at a time
9: Choose your moment carefully and try to ensure the least amount of people are in your frame
10: If people are in your frame, perhaps use them to best effect. Perhaps use a 10 Stop ND filter to shoot for 30 seconds to create ghostly like figures in your image.

I have a real love affair with wooden jetties, even ones that are damaged to the recent floods and this section of just one of the jetties at Derwentwater stood out to me as I was setting up my camera to take a different scene.
The heavy mist on Tuesday morning (6am) provided me with the perfect opportunity to capture a beautiful and simple scene. This was my first visit to the Lake District since early March and oh how I have missed its beauty.

FOUR DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

I'm just about to strip my new minibus of its six rear seats before loading it up with my IKEA single mattress, camping stove and a myriad of personal belongings and clothing before leaving for Ireland at midnight tonight when I thought that I would share this dark and moody image of the fantastic tunnel down in the bowels of the earth at Hodge Close Quarry near Coniston in the UK's most beautiful National Park, the Lake District.
I captured this back in January this year whilst leading a workshop for six people. The conditions were wonderful for misty ethereal images of the silver birches and mid-grey slate.
This track are the remains of a crane that was operational until the early 1960's. A huge section of rock fell from above and smashed the end section of the crane and as such it has bent one side of the crane and pushed it into the water. Amazing to see such a strong section of metal bent like that.

Happy Christmas Eve everyone
This image was taken this morning after paying the old St Anne's Pier a visit with two of my friends Stephen Cheatley and Mark McNeil (see links to their pages below).
Mark wrote on Facebook this morning that a high tide was due at lunchtime as I packed my camera bag up and ventured out for a couple of hours. To be honest getting out and about and doing a spot of photography for just me is becoming more difficult due to the demands of the business (what a lovely position to be in I know) so whenever I can find the time to head out with my new Canon EOS R mirrorless camera, all's the better.
So here's a head on image of the old pier. The story of this pier is quite an interesting one. Built in 1885, the original pier end was three storeys high to allow passengers to board the steamships without having too wait long for the tide to rise.
Sadly only one storey can be viewed these days due to the silting of the North Channel once the Ribble Navigation Company formed a new channel to the Port of Preston in the 1890's. Because of this, from 1910, the steamships could no longer use the jetty.
Then a big storm in 1894 had a large fishing boat broke free from its moorings and collided with the cast iron pier supports resulting in a partial collapse of the completely isolating the end of the pier from the main body.

Anyhow, back to my shoot this morning. I waded out to the head of the pier in the receding tide in my wellies and a quick set up of my Canon EOS R had a shot in the bag. I used a Nisi 3 stop ND filter as well as a 10 stop ND filter because the shutter speed without filters was 1/250 due to the bright conditions. These two filters gave me a thirty second exposure, perfect for smoothing out the water.

Sometimes I like to get a little creative so here's something I shot last week during my time on the Isle of Skye. I love how some of the bus shelters in this part of the world have plastic school type chairs in them and while waiting for sunset, I decided to light up one of them using my head torch.
The colour of the blue post-sunset sky contrasted well with the warmth of the light. Personally, I love the image but what do you think?

Blea Tarn and the Langdale Pikes, Lake District
If someone was to ask me to name my top three viewpoints in the Lake District, blea tarn and the Langdale Pikes in the distance would be fighting for the top spot such is its beauty. The craggy nature of the Langdales bowls me over every time.
This shot was taken last week while leading a four-day workshop in the Lake District. It is made up of four vertical images that have been stitched together in Photoshop CC. I shoot with a 50mp Canon 5Ds so you can imagine just how big the overall file size is (619 MB 11319 x 9569 pixels). My PC struggled to edit it in a timely manner but it was well worth the wait and the patience needed to create the image.

Back in May, during my mammoth 3,200 miles, five week road trip around the UK, I got to revisit one of the eeriest places in the UK, Dungeness.
If you have yet to visit this surreal location, I urge you to. It is a wonderful place for landscape/seascape photography and is worth spending a day wandering around with your camera.
According to Wikipedia, Dungeness is one of the largest expanses of shingles in Europe. It is of international conservation importance for its geomorphology, plant and invertebrate communities, and birdlife. This is recognised and protected mostly through its conservation designations as a national nature reserve (NNR), a Special Protection Area (SPA), a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), and part of the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) of Dungeness, Romney Marsh, and Rye Bay.
There is a remarkable variety of wildlife living at Dungeness, with over 600 different types of plants: a third of all those found in Britain. It is one of the best places in Britain to find invertebrates such as moths, bees, beetles, and spiders; many of these are very rare, some found nowhere else in Britain.
However, there are also boats and wooden winch sheds to photograph as well. Overall, it is worth a visit. Let me know if you have visited Dungeness and what your thoughts are below if you wish.

Five Night Assynt & Inverpolly Photography Workshop/Tour 18th-23rd November 2018 £650 / £795

Taken on a recent one week recce of the Assynt area for an autumnal five day workshop there Oct 2018, I came across these trees on the island which grabbed my attention.
Once parked up and one short walk later, I was by the shoreline and all set up. The light was magical, lighting up the gorgeous orange background land in the distance as well as the lovely grasses in the foreground.
The whole region of Assynt is a landscape photographer's paradise and I cannot wait to return next year and show those who join me the wonders of this stunning part of Scotland.

Taken on a workshop that I ran in the truly stunning Assynt and Inverpolly region of Scotland last November.
This particular morning we visited the ruins of Ardvreck Castle which dates back to the 16th century and stands on a rocky promontory jutting out into Loch Assynt. It makes a wonderful scene to shoot but normally with a much longer lens in order to have the castle occupy a more dominant role but the clouds that rolled on by in an otherwise glorious blue sky were too hard to resist and so the castle takes a back seat role in this image.

Four DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP

Taken on Friday during a 1-2-1 tuition day with Christine, a regular client of mine. The weather was somewhat 'challenging' with a little bit of the wet stuff looming large in the air but this led for some great conditions to shoot in.
For example the rain brings with it reduced visibility which in this instance was welcomed as Fleetwith Pike and Haystacks in the distance (each over 2,000ft in height) blended into the background allowing this wonderful 20ft plus tall tree to take centre stage. We found this cracking wooden log on arrival too so I thought it would be a shame not to utilise it.

I had a very enjoyable day on Friday as I was assisting Shaun on a 1-2-1 tuition day in the Lake District. Our first port of call was Coniston and knowing the area very well, I decided to take him to these wonderful little wooden jetties.
I was demonstrating the art of composing an image incorporating several factors (tree roots, the pier itself, the snow caped peaks of the Old Man in the background not to mention the main tree too).
This is what I eventually came up with.

Since arriving back home on Thursday from my two weeks away around the south island of New Zealand, I have barely found the time to even look at the photos I captured on camera let alone edit a dozen and write up a blog on my experience. I guess it will have to wait until I return from my trip to Skye tomorrow where I will be running a five day workshop until Friday.
Anyhow, I did want to share this panoramic image that I edited earlier this evening of an absolute stunning place that I was told about by Bret, the manager of ASURE Ambassador Motor Lodge in Oamaru. While chatting to the ever so friendly Brett on checkout, he happened to mention these outstanding natural clay cliffs en-route to Mt Cook National Park.
So Ed and I decided to go and pay them a visit and boy was we so glad that we did. This place is spellbinding and HUGE.
Basically, these clay cliffs are tall pinnacles separated by narrow ravines and are made up of layers of gravel and silt, originally formed by the flow from ancient glaciers over a million years ago. OVER A MILLION YEARS AGO. WOW.
It is difficult to appreciate the sheer size of these towering pinnacles as there is nothing in shot to give you a sense of scale so here is a drone video I found on YouTube by Y2J Does Asia.Skip the first thirty seconds of him chatting to the French couple and watch in awe as he pilots the drone of some of the most stunning scenery I have come across in New Zealand. I LOVE THIS PLACE.

This beach that you can see here was photographed on my last day there back in January and it is typical of the stunningly beautiful sandy beaches that you see on Harris. The colour of the water is aqua, the sandy lovely and golden and the skies either bright blue or full of the most vibrant clouds known to man.
Scotland is sure one hell of a place to visit with a camera and I never tire of doing so whatever the weather/time of the year but late autumn should produce some stunning colours whilst still being mild. The temperatures were ten degrees in the middle of January which happened to be the warmest in Europe at the time. Apparently Lewis and Harris does not suffer extreme cold weather in the winter.
Anyway, I hope you all like the image as much as I did taking it :D

A quick photo captured during my 1-2-2 tuition day with two new clients today in the Lake District (the wonderful Muriel and Charlie). After they had got their images in the camera, and were packing up, I quickly moved into position to include this beautiful wooden log that had washed up against the shoreline.
Placing it in the bottom right hand corner, the log leads the eye towards the wooden jetty of the boathouse before the viewer ends up admiring this wonderful live in boathouse.
You can rent this boathouse on a nightly basis (around £300) and it surely must have one of the finest views in the Lake District. A very iconic place to photograph but you can see why.
Tomorrow I head back up to the Lakes on a 1-2-1 with a new client and the weather is looking like summer again, pure blue skies and brilliant sunshine. I shall have to choose our locations carefully to maximise that light.

Abandoned Tanneries, Thalassino Ageri, Chania, Crete
On my third visit to Crete back in April 2019 (my first being 1999), I rented a nice little apartment only fifteen minutes from Chania and as such, this city (my favourite city in Crete) was an obvious choice to discover in more detail.
I had seen a couple of photos online of these rather wonderful abandoned factories by the ocean a brisk ten minute walk east of Chania itself. So I decided to capture the end of the day there while wandering around.
I love nothing better than sitting in one of the harbourside cafes drinking coffee in the sun on a warm day (under 25°c suits me fine) while people watching and seeing the boats bob up and down in the water.
I cannot wait to return to Crete again for it really is one of my favourite places in the world. The island is small enough to get around but has some spectacular scenery including the 8,000ft White Mountains. Perhaps I shall run a workshop there sometime.

One for Sliders Sunday.
It's been a cool but gloriously sunny weekend here and Spring is right around the corner. It looked so lovely to be outdoors and yet you couldn't help yourself from wondering, 'but should we even be going outdoors right now?...Should any of us?... Anywhere? I feel fine but what if I'm unwittingly carrying the virus or just haven't shown symptoms yet? I don't want to make someone else sick just because I chose to go out. And what if they carry it to their aging parents or grandparents or to the person fighting lung cancer or.....The possibilities are so many?' And that seems to be where we're at. Uncertainty hovering over each and every one of us. Increasing it seems, with each passing day.....hour-by-hour almost.
If there's any light to be found amid all of this, then I can only hope it is a global mindshift within each of us about just who we are, our individual place and purpose in this world and how we treat those around us, because surely the direction things have been headed lately needs a drastic change of course. And so, this is my ode to the Springtime Blues of 2020. May we be mindful of how our own actions might impact others - not just their health but their livelihood too - not to mention the additional stress we could be putting on an already-strained healthcare system. Please stay strong and healthy, think about whether you are helping the problem or carelessly adding to it, and be there for one another. Sod the stupid toilet paper!
Another image taken during the beautiful sunset on Wednesday evening. I took Derek and Martin, my two clients down to the landing stages at Derwentwater an hour or so before sunset in the hope of capturing these gorgeous wooden passenger boats in the fading sun.
We were not to be disappointed. I have to confess that I have a love affair with these boats and if I was able to buy and run one, I would, I love them that much.
This boat is called Annie Mellor was the sister of Sir George Mellor, JP, who was appointed a knighthood in 1921 for public and national services, particularly in connection with The King’s Lancashire Military Convalescent Hospital, Blackpool.
This boat was built in 1932 by Borwick & Sons as a houseboat for Sir George Mellor, JP. At the time, there was seating for 120 with accommodation for 40 in the cabin which was furnished in blue velvet with mahogany and brass fittings. It arrived at Derwentwater in 1935 and after a total rebuild in 2008 is still in regular use today.

This gorgeous scene opened up before us as we were driving to the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse in the very northern part of Lewis.
Me and my six clients ventured down to the loch once I had located the landowner and asked for his permission to gain access to his land to spend an hour or so shooting the beautiful views. I thought it polite to ask.
The lone boat gently swung around throughout the hour or so so it was just a question of waiting for it to position itself perfectly before capturing it on camera. I have to confess that I find the Outer Hebrides absolutely alluring and captivating not only to photograph but just to drive around and soak up the remoteness and isolation that some of the locations offer you. It's simply magical and if you have the island on your bucket list of places to visit, please do so before it's too late (whilst it is still quiet and peaceful).

The view of St Thomas Church from high up on a hillside over a mile away is one of the most impressive views in Slovenia that I have had the pleasure to see during my time here.
Sunrise is the best time to see the church illuminated by the rising sun while mist swirls in the valleys below. The numerous layers of mountains in the distance frames the scene beautifully but honestly, arrive an hour before sunrise (7.15am at this time of the year) and just watch this little part of the world wake and that is all the goodness your soul will need for the rest of the day.

WOW, WOW, WOW, what a sunset that was and believe it or not, genuine colours too (raw file to prove). It was an incredible end to what was a cracking day's photography in Ireland early in May and this remains one of my favourite images from my week over there.
It's a lovely feeling to be able to delve back into a folder of raw files from a great trip and find so many images of stunning scenes ready and waiting to be edited. But in terms of road trips, the memories forged are just as important as the images that I capture for these I carry around with me always and forever.
Landscape photography has changed my life in ways I could only dream of back in 2007 when I bought my first DSLR (a used Minolta 5D). In fact, I'd go as far as to say that it has created a life for me. Images like these have me feel thankful for the small pleasures that I enjoy.

Another new edit for you. Looking back on images like this one that I took on a week long workshop that I ran back in October has me long to spend an unhealthy amount of time in a country that has a piece of me remain behind ready for me to be reunited the next time I visit.
The only other country to have this effect on me is New Zealand which is a place I have had the good fortune to visit twice.

Taken on my World Tour of the UK last July and August, this wonderful old pier (which incidentally happens to be the only pier to link an island to the mainland) is in a serious state of disrepair but I often find beauty in the less than perfect structures and buildings.
On setting up, the sky started colouring up into a gorgeous orange glow which was in contrast to the green/blue of the water beneath it. It was just a lovely evening to be out and experiencing Weston-super-Mare

Taken back in November during a five day workshop that I was running on Skye, this iconic view of the Old Man of Storr looked absolutely gorgeous. After a healthy walk up to the ridge, we turned around and within minutes saw the sky fill with the most beautiful colours of pink, yellow, red, blue and orange.
It's a very impressive sight with perhaps one of the most amazing views anywhere in the UK. If you have never visited Skye with your camera and have always promised yourself that you would, well lucky for you I have a couple of places left on my 22nd-27th February 2019 workshop.
Priced at only £795, you will be treated to five nights in a beautiful welcoming and warm five bedroom cottage near Portree as well as enjoying my many years experience photographing the magical island.
Transport during the workshop is included with an option to ride up with me from Preston and back in my modern nine seat minibus (for a small additional fee) for those who would rather not drive the 420 mile journey themselves from Preston, Lancashire.

THREE DAY DORSET WORKSHOP

Taken during my first and recent visit to Dorset last month. One of the most frustrating challenges I face as a full-time, professional landscape photographer is trying to capture an iconic location differently and uniquely. Durdle Door is arguably the jewel in the Dorset crown (actually I prefer Castle Corfe) and it has been photographed a million times by a million people but how to photograph it differently.
This is what I settled on. Arriving at 1am one calm, warm morning late September this year, I sat halfway down the steps and just took in the view. Weymouth in the distance providing some lovely warm light and the sound of the waves gently crashing up against the pebbled beach which produced that high pitched and empty clattering sound of pebble on pebble action as the water ruffled them up on the outstroke.
I wanted to use my amazing LED Lenser head torch to illuminate the landscape and after a few goes, I settled on lighting the mainland areas and the rock face to the left of Durdle Door for twenty-five seconds followed by holding the torch downwards from above my head for just five seconds. The quality and power generated from the £60 torch is quite remarkable. I am very happy with what I have achieved here, not least because it's a little out of the ordinary.

The weather conditions that day were quite dramatic and I could not resist lining the camera up against this wonderful rock pool wall that curves round just perfectly.
The castle of Bamburgh stands guard over the shoreline as it has done for hundreds of years.

I was only in Venice for two days and as such, felt the need to maximise my time there. I had based myself at the lovely Hotel Flora, just 300m from St Mark's Square. It took a mere four minutes to walk and realising just how busy Venice gets a little after sunrise, I opted to venture out at 4.30am to revel in the beauty of this huge square.
On arriving the first thing that I noticed was the occasional late night/early morning drunken reveler on their way back to their base. They were no bother at all and I was able to continue to set up and shoot.
But the beauty of St Mark's Square was all too evident as the many thousands of lights twinkled and illuminated the parts worth showcasing. I quite liked the red chairs in this image as they stood idle waiting for the hustle and bustle of thousands of visitors to use them in just a few hours.

Four Day Lake District Photography Workshop

I visited the brand new Ashness Pier very early this morning after ringing the Keswick Boat Company yesterday asking if the floating pontoon had been removed and after confirming that it had, I drove up there this morning to capture a photo or two of it.
The weather forecast was looking less than favourable on first inspection but on arriving, I was so excited to see heavy mist and light rain falling. Why was I excited?
Well, it's a brand new pier with brand new bright and clean wooden planks and this did not inspire me but on seeing the lovely reflections of the posts in the sodden wood planks, a big smile grew on my face. The wood also darkened down a bit with a little bit of water on them.
I must confess now, that should you visit this pier, you will not get exactly the same shot. Why? Well, those lovely iconic wooden steps that you see at the end of the pier are no longer there. Let me explain. When I visited the pier a couple of weeks ago, two joiners were finishing off the posts at the end of the pier. We chatted and I asked if the wooden steps would be making a return and they said no as the new pier was now built to the correct height to have foot passengers step aboard the boats without the aid of the steps.
I said that it was a crying shame as those steps were what made Ashness Pier iconic and that their absence would be sorely missed (by me at least anyway). I looked behind me and noticed them sat on the shoreline amongst the old rotten wooden posts and planks. I asked if I could have them and they agreed that I could as they were being skipped anyway. So, I very happily loaded them into the boot of my car.
So, this morning, on arriving at the pier, I placed the steps at the end as a homage to the old pier and I could not be happier. They look so well suited there don't they? Well I obviously brought them home with me after the shoot and the pier looks naked again without them sadly.
One thing to mention about the new pier is that it is not only a lot shorter but it's also a fair amount wider. Those steps just about slotted into the gap on the old pier but you can see several inches of space on either side of them on this new pier. At least you'll be able to have the boat passengers walk past you now while you are photographing it so that's not a bad thing.

I got to witness a gorgeous sunset over from the Hang Gliders Launch, Mount Tamborine in Queensland, Australia this week.
This is an iconic place for sunset lovers and romantic couples to turn up and watch the sun go down. Couples turned up with blankets to keep themselves warm but you will quite often see the more adventurous among us in the form of hang gliders running off the hill and into the air.

I have said many times previously that I am not a wildlife photographer but occasionally I will attempt to capture on camera something that tickles my fancy and Herons for some reason tend to always have me reach for my camera.
This one that was moving about in the grass reeds yesterday during a 1-2-1 with a new client was begging to be photographed. It even stood still while I set up my camera complete with the 70-200mm lens.

Iceland is quite simply a magical playground for the landscape photographer. Every corner reveals something quite extraordinary. This scene is hidden behind a large wall of earth as you approach the first of two car parks as you're heading east.
I parked up the minibus on my week long workshop there last month with my four clients and we raced up to the top of the earthy mound to see this gorgeous view before us. I could not help but capture it in a five vertical image panorama stitched together in Photoshop CC.
The light and colours were stunning and the icebergs slowly moved around the lagoon. The clarity of the water was outstanding. This was definitely one of my favourite views of the workshop. I hope you like it too.

If there's one thing that i love photographing, it's lighthouses and this one that sits a little inland from the ocean on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland is a delight to capture on camera.
This image was taken back in February the morning before my seven day photography tour started. The sky was the most wonderful shade of blue and the whiteness of the snow contrasted beautifully. Little wonder why I love visiting Iceland in the winter, although I also love photographing the country during the autumn months too.

Chemical Beach, what a place. Full of interesting things to shoot. This image was captured during some really difficult weather conditions and I remember that day being the wettest and windiest that I have shot in for some time and Tony Higginson (who was shooting with me) also thought the same.
We ventured down from Bamburgh to Seaham to shoot Chemical Beach. This beach has some incredibly impressive viewpoints from which to capture the sea stack from but in the end I settled on this rather lovely old wooden beam. It was large enough to lead me into the image and along to the seastack itself.
What are your thoughts?
p.s. This image is a HDR shot created from three images in camera. Impressive HDR feature from Canon.

7.10am on a gorgeous morning at Durdle Door mid-September this year and having parked up by the roadside and walked the twenty-five minute walk down to this iconic viewpoint, I set up and waited for the magic to happen.
I see so many iconic scenes on social media that I have yet to visit that when I eventually do get the opportunity to stand there with the camera on a morning like I experienced here, I am reminded that I have the best job in the world. On this particular morning, I was alone for a few minutes until a couple of other photographers joined me to shoot Bat's Head behind me.
For those of you who have yet to visit Durdle Door, the sound of the water as it washes over the pebbles sounds so strange. There's a natural pebble shelf that has been formed over the years and the water rushes up to the top of it before rushing back down leaving the pebbles to clatter against each other.

Isn't it funny how time flies by and yet memories can stay with you forever. This photo was taken during my few days off between running workshops in Skye and Glencoe back in November 2016.
Life was hectic, with emails, phone calls and media requests for my Fogbow image (white rainbow over the tree in the snow image) that standing there behind my camera, watching the sun go down on another day, I felt a peace and calmness descend on me in the most therapeutic way.
And that's the thing about landscape photography that's so important for me. It offers me a chance to 'zone out' and immerse myself in the scene. Reality gets replaced by fantasy as you lose yourself in the beautiful surroundings (if that makes sense). As such I find photography to be very important for my soul and a clear mind and it feels like something I HAVE to do rather than want to do sometimes. It really is a wonderful position to be in.
Anyhow, I hope you enjoy watching the sun go down over this loch on the beautiful and desolate Rannoch Moor. Peace out.

I and my five clients were blessed with some rather challenging weather on Skye back in mid-November but not on this day. The sun was shining over the lightly covered snow-capped peaks of the 160ft tall rock of the Old Man of Storr. Personally, I love the little island with its lone tree that no doubt has weathered many a storm passing over Skye during the winter months.
Sometimes the smallest things turn out to be the hardiest in life which always has me in awe of mother nature. I am so pleased to hear that Planet Earth II has a record number of viewers, displacing all the reality TV shows. This shows me that people want to connect with the great outdoors and wildlife in general. This pleases me greatly for the more people that get to witness and appreciate such views as this one, the more this plant will benefit from it.

This image is an eight vertical image stitched panorama at sunrise taken at the end of my recent 26 day tour of the UK. It was a glorious morning and well worth dragging my backside out of bed at 4.30am for.
I rather liked Southwold Pier. Having arrived the night before in my stripped out nine seater minibus which was converted into a makeshift campervan for the tour, the main sign was all lit up and the whole pier looked lovely and vibrant as the sun set in the distance. Seeing it again first thing in the morning was a treat too.

Taken today during a 1-2-1 I was running with John, a new client and the conditions were magical at Hodge Close in the Lake District. As we arrived, the stormy skies rolled in bringing threatening amounts of rain in the air.
The sun fought its way through the little pockets of clear air between the dark clouds and when this happened it lit up the peaks of the Langdales. What i loved was the wonderful layering of the light from the dark trees at the bottom of the image to the brighter mid-ground of the fells and the lower section of the sky working its way to near darkness at the top of the frame.
I have a couple more images from today so I'll share them over the next couple of days. I am back in the Lakes tomorrow on another 1-2-1 with another client of mine Richard. What a truly stunning 40ft waterfall this is. You gain access to it via a thirty-minute walk which I did with crampons on as the path up and down was super slippery in parts. My good friend Duncan was my guide for the day as he had previously visited it. What an absolute gem of a find.
I loved the black columnar basalt formations which provided a wonderful backdrop to the waterfall. I set up the camera while stood on the ice which formed over the river (I'm sure I'll go through the ice one of these days) and the black hole in the ice attracted me to this particular viewpoint. Due to the limited focusing ability of my 16-35mm f4 Canon lens, I decided to focus stack seven images into one to ensure that the whole image was sharp and in focus back to front.
A few minutes before I was stood directly under some huge icicles to the left of this image and I had to take my chance on them not falling on me while setting up but it was this image that I preferred in the end. I hope you all love it and once again Iceland delivers some stunning scenes to photograph.

THREE DAY DORSET WORKSHOP

Surely one of the finest sunrises I have ever witnessed while in Dorset last month. Corfe Castle became my favourite location to photograph and on this particular morning I met fellow photographer Mark Pelleymounter who lives in the area.
We arrived on location very early and were the first on the scene so we set up in what we believed to be the best viewpoint (and I still think that). Jeremy Walker happened to walk by with a client in tow and a quick chat and a catch up followed before the serious business of shooting the castle took place.
The colours started to build, more people arrived and took their position higher up the hill but that would push the castle down in front of the hill behind it, therefore losing the outline of the castle. I was so happy to see the colours gaining strength and I was like the cat that got the cream when I captured this in-camera HDR image on my Canon 5Ds. My DSLR may be a 50mp monster and there are times when I question whether I need such high resolution but on morning's like these, absolutely I do. Last night I ventured up Loughrigg Fell in the Lake District with my good buddy Tony Higginson. We climbed up close to the 1,000ft summit that gave grand vistas of the surrounding scenery which were breath-taking as always.
In the distance are the dramatic lines of the iconic Langdale Pikes and above it the colours were building nicely before they dropped away. The sky was amazing, the clouds so purposeful and dominant. I knew that they would look fantastic on camera and I'm delighted to see that on this occasion I was correct.

I'm just looking back through literally thousands of images that I have taken over the winter from the many different locations that I have visited including Skye, Glencoe, Lewis & Harris, Iceland, Lake District and Yorkshire and I see so many images that I have yet to look at properly let alone edit.
But here's one that I took on the gorgeous Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland back in mid-January of this year. To be honest, I cannot remember exactly where I took it but it was somewhere near the Callanish Stones area, perhaps a little further up the coast. I did so much travelling that week that it was difficult keeping track.
The rock formations at this location peaked my interest, not just because of their shape and textures but also that they had plant life growing on them which helps to give the image 'life'. The stunning aqua colour of the water in the distance (yes it really is that colour) merely adds to the colour palette of the image.

This photo was taken during my eight days solo shooting in Iceland prior to my workshop starting in March. I had arrived at the car park at Kirkjufjara to find seriously strong winds blowing over the peninsula that I was stood on when I took this shot.
I had to stand with the wind to my back whilst trying to shelter the camera and tripod as best I could in order to allow me to shoot this long exposure image. I loved the isolation of the sea stacks in the distance with the rock arch to the right just about showing itself to me. I find the lava rock in the foreground to be very interesting to photograph for it has a tremendous amount of texture and colour.
If you turn around and shoot in the other direction towards Reynisfjara beach, you'll be treated to more sea stacks in the foreground and the distance too. This whole area is wonderful to photograph although the beaches all around are deadly so if shooting from the beach near the water, be incredibly careful as sneaker waves come in hard and fast and they will take you out to your death. Two people have died on these beaches since early 2016 with many more having had very close encounters. I saw people getting too close to the water on my several visits. I won't be doing that again myself.
But if treated with care and respect, the area is a magnet for photographers and should be visited and enjoyed. The black volcanic sandy beaches look amazing here too. Iceland delivers some stunning scenery to us shooters to capture on camera.
