Snowy Peaks, Vestrahorn, Hofn, Iceland
I am casting my eye back over February 2020 and an image I captured during a workshop that I ran back in Iceland.
Yesterday, I was asked by an Icelandic chap who lives in Iceland, what my favourite location in Iceland was. Vestrahorn was my reply although it's a very difficult question to ultimately answer because of the many, many amazing locations that compete for honours but Vestrahorn is such a photogenic location that delivers so much, that it has to be the winner.
Take a look at the top comment box below to see my image of the aurora over Vestrahorn. This shows you how the place looks at night with the green stuff in full force.
I cannot wait to return to Iceland. I was meant to be flying out towards the end of the month to run my tenth workshop since March 2017 but alas, it's not meant to be this year so I shall have to contend with looking forward to my autumn workshops in October. The first workshop in October is fully booked but there are limited places on my second workshop.

This photograph of the very photogenic grade II listed Roker Lighthouse was captured back in November when Tony Higginson and I were on a day off between workshops in Northumberland.
Tony and I like to discover new places on our day off during a week when we visit Northumberland twice a year and Roker was just one location on our bucket list last year.
When we arrived the rain started to fall but the light was beautifully soft and vibrant. No sooner had I set up by the roadside looking down and over the lighthouse when all of a sudden this wonderful shaft of light filtered in from our right. It looked as though it was wanting to illuminate the lighthouse. It was amazing for just a few seconds.
I hope you all enjoy looking at it as much as I did shooting it :D

I ventured down to Lake Bled this morning in the hope of a lovely sunrise and ten minutes after sunrise, the sun uplighted the clouds above and transformed them into a bundle of colour that was vibrant and stunning all at the same time.
I love the formation that the clouds made and the patterns looked spectacular. The reflections were beautiful too as there was no wind to speak of. Overall, just a lovely way to start a weekend. I hope you all enjoy yours too.

As well as the excursion, this day was a testing day of sorts.
Got a new backpack a few weeks ago to carry gear (Mindshift BackLight). Check! Carried some extra gear just to add some weight and it felt great.
Got some new boots this past week that are water proof. Double check!! Feet kept dry.
And wanted to test using my Canon wide angle on the Sony camera. Autofocus speed is not great, so switch to manual focusing which isn't a big deal for landscapes. Focus peaking makes it easy. Check!
A good day :))

Waterstein Head from Neist Point, Isle of Skye, Scotland
Neist Point and its lighthouse dominates the location that is the most westerly point in the whole of the mainland UK but I found myself looking back towards Waterstein Head while walking towards the lighthouse. The light was absolutely gorgeous and I felt compelled to stop and fire off a few shots.
The golden colours of the landscape matched with the stormy dark skies brooding overhead make for a dramatic scene and one that I am delighted to have captured on camera. This was taken during the month of February yet looks almost autumnal.

Stairway To Heaven, Haukland Beach, Lofoten, Norway
I cannot believe that this image was taken two and a half years ago and even more so that I have not edited it until today.
Haukland Beach is one of the loveliest beaches on the Lofoten peninsula and it happens to reside next door to the otherworldly beach of Uttakliev making this section of coastline some of the best to spend some time at with your camera. Incidentally, the two beaches are separated by a short tunnel.
Haukland Beach is a popular place to visit at the end of the day as the sun sets directly in front of you which allows you a perfect opportunity to capture stunning sunsets. However, this image was taken at 1.15pm (sunset was 5pm) but the wonderful moving cloud allowed for some diffusion of the sun to my left which in turn, had the wooden ladder glow a beautiful orange colour.
Oh, how I miss those days. Lofoten is truly an amazing place to visit and I cannot wait to return in November (only TWO PLACES LEFT for those interested).

To witness the northern lights (Aurora Borealis) is genuinely one of the most privileged events to witness in the world. On this occasion, I was lined up along the banks of the lagoon along with perhaps thirty other photographers. We had arrived around 8pm and waited two hours for something to happen. At 10pm I decided to leave but no sooner had I made that decision when this amazing blast of green light blazed across the sky.
For the next hour, I shot this wonderful scene while photographers all around lamented the lights that were switched on on the cars across the water in the car park (me included). All in all though a fantastic end to another fantastic day's shooting in Iceland.

Yes I know it's been done to death, by me too but you cannot walk on by without grabbing a quick shot. Everyone it appears has photographed this waterfall on the River Coppull on Rannoch Moor in Scotland.
It is almost impossible to shoot it differently to everyone else so this is one location where I do not try. I am resigned to shooting it like everyone else and so yesterday I did just that yet again. The weather forecast predicted a poor day weatherwise so I was delighted to have managed a pretty decent day's photography as the weather mainly behaved itself. My clients were very happy too.
I hope you all like it. Have a great weekend everyone.

Sunset, Haukland Beach, Lofoten, Norway
Norway. What a country and one that I dearly love. I wish I could own a house by the sea there as the light in the autumn and winter months is just spectacular.
This image was taken during a personal week long trip with my good friend Ed in February 2019. I edited this image today after it has sat on my hard drive for over three years but as I spent some time with it this afternoon, this image transported me right back to that beach at Haukland during what was a stunning sunset.
There's a calmness and peacefulness that descends on you when you're in Lofoten, especially in the colder months. Another country that I visit in the winter months is Iceland and that feels completely different. Iceland is raw, wild and unpredictable, especially in the winter, which brings its own enjoyment of course, not to mention stunning scenery but if you are wanting some time in a quiet, reflective and energising place, not to mention somewhere where you can experience mindfulness at its most peaceful, then Lofoten is for you.
I shall be heading back to Lofoten this November and again in January/February 2023 and I cannot wait. If you wish to join me, click the link for more details.

One of the joys of travelling to the same country at different times of the year, is that you get an opportunity to see and shoot the same scenes but looking completely different.
Here's a gorgeous little lake called Haldsvågen located just 1km southwest of the big town of Leknes. There is very limited parking so a walk of a few hundred metres might be in order but isn't the view worth it?
This image was shot October 2018 and as such there was only a light amount of snow covering the hills in the distance. It almost looks like icing sugar has been sprinkled.
I am really looking forward to returning next February,. Details to be announced on Sunday evening :D

Sunset Over Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Dolomites, Italy
I have been casting an eye back over my images from my October 2018 workshop in the Italian Dolomites when I came across this image that I had yet to edit.
One of the most amazing places that I been so fortunate to experience is the three peaks of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. To hike up to the Rifugio Locatelli, the 120 bed mountain hostel that is located 8,000ft up in the mountains is quite an achievement but the views are quite simply outstanding, in whatever direction you happen to be looking.
To be there when the sun sets (off to my right) and see this gorgeous little chapel called the Chiesetta San Bernardo di Mentone light up with the 10,000ft peaks behind is truly awe-inspiring. Having missed out on visiting this place last September due to awful weather (I did visit the Dolomites after running my Tuscany workshop), I cannot wait until I return this October. Fingers crossed everything works out and that I shall get to stand there yet again with fellow photographers to share my time with.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone, whatever you happen to be doing :-)

Four DAY LAKE DISTRICT AUTUMN WORKSHOP
Tues 31st October - Fri 3rd November 2017 £795
www.melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/lake-distric...
I captured this image late this afternoon whilst finishing up a 1-2-1 with a new female client. The light came good right at the end of a rather grey, flat and lifeless day and knowing the Lake District as well as I do, I know that the Langdale Pikes shine like a beacon when a little bit of light hits them.
I am so pleased with this image. I used a LEE Big Stopper to shoot it at 25 seconds as I wanted the smooth off the water in order to have the rocks stand out more. I love the yellow grasses at the base of the central rock. They play as much a role in creating an atmosphere as the light on the main peak does.

Lofoten Photo Workshop - Nov 2022
melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/photography-workshops/lo...
Dappled Light, Hamnoy, Lofoten, Norway
Lofoten, Norway, WOW, what a place. Lofoten is an archipelago of islands that are connected by road bridges and it is quite simply one of the most spectacular places on earth.
I have visited several times, while running both autumn and winter workshops. This particular image was freshly edited this afternoon in Photoshop CC and yet I took it in October 2018. I find it difficult to imagine that I am still editing images from three and a half years ago but Lofoten has proved that there are an almost overwhelming amount of opportunities to capture some stunning scenery.
However, from 2023 onwards, I have decided to drop my autumn Lofoten workshop which normally takes place in November, in favour of doubling up on my winter workshops in January/February instead. So November 2022 will be my final Lofoten workshop that I shall run in the autumn months, so if you wish to jump onboard this year, I have a very limited number of places available.

So it has been three days since I returned home from Slovenia and as expected, straight into full lockdown however I am reminded of the many, many, many occasions that I was so blessed to have experienced during my three months in Slovenia.
Such as this gorgeous sunrise at the start of December. Having visited my favourite church at Jamnik on several occasions previously, I knew exactly where to place myself on this particular morning and the colours were just spectacular.
There was a heavy presence of cloud but directly above the horizon, an opening appeared ten minutes before the sun started rising. I could not believe it and when the sky turned a gorgeous, golden, orange colour, I was smiling from ear to ear I can tell you.
Do I miss Slovenia? Absolutely yes, very much so in fact but I am eternally grateful for the time that I had to discover its many, many gems and the memories will live with me forever and thankfully I have the images to share with you all.
I LOVE sLOVEnia 😊

Monday was spent travelling around the various beautiful locations on the magical Snaefellsnes Peninsula, one of my favourite parts of Iceland. To cap the day off, we visited this iconic mountain called Kirkjufell. I suspect that there is not a person in the UK who has not seen this gem on social media but trust me when I say, that to be able to stand there and witness a stunning sunset like we did is an absolute privilege.
The colours grew and grew, there were only a handful of other photographers in sight plus the odd tourist wandering around but in essence, we near enough had this location all to ourselves. Amazing to see the mountain light up from the left hand side and the clouds to radiate the kind of colours I dream about. That's another memorable visit to Kirkjufell to savour.

WOW, what an amazing morning I had yesterday down at Rydal Water. The mist was heavy set and provided a wonderful backdrop behind this gorgeous lone tree island. The trees and fells on the other side of the water was largely hidden and this provided the tree with a perfect opportunity to stand out and become the star of the show.
I do love a good misty morning in the Lake District. Have a great day everyone.

Welcome to the Dolomites and my first edited image from my first two days in this part of the world.
Now for those of you who know me I am rarely stuck for words when it comes to describing a location that I visit and how it makes me feel when I am on location photographing it but the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Monte Paterno that I visited yesterday has me stumped.
I have seen beauty that has stunned me, silenced me even but this place took me to a whole new level. Standing high up on a rocky ridge watching the sun go down behind the 9,000ft+ mountains was almost a spiritual experience.
The scale of the landscape before me had me not know where to look first but it mattered little for beauty that is hard to register lay all around me. The colour, texture and shape of the mountains was staggeringly beautiful. The Dolomites has captured my heart entirely and hose who have visited and witnessed this level of beauty for themselves will I am absolutely sure, agree.

Well what an incredible sunrise me and my three clients experienced this morning on my one day autumnal Lake District workshop at Windermere.
We were driving en-route to Rydal to shoot the tree when the colours in my minibus wing mirrors lit up with stunning pinks and blues. Without hesitation I decided to park up at Waterhead and walk down towards Holme Crag. It was an inspired choice due to the copious amounts of beautiful little boats that made for great subjects. Here's one such boat that enjoyed being surrounded by the mist that rolled on the surface of the water.
HUGE thanks to Carl, Dave and Dean for their company today. It was a really enjoyable day's photography and a quick hi to Chris Sale, a YouTube vlogger who I bumped into on the shoreline of Rydal mid-morning. It was great to chat with you Chris.
You can follow Chris's YouTube channel here and don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to his channel if you like what you see. www.youtube.com/channel/UCaR849-KG86v4UgD52PLT4g
Okay, that's it for today. I will edit another image tomorrow from today's workshop and I shall make a start on my New Zealand blog including plenty of my 'yet to be seen' images. That Tree, which is what it is officially called (great name isn't it?), is perhaps one of New Zealand's most popular photographed views in the whole country. I would rank it in the top three most popular locations shot.
I can see why.
The tree is positioned on the edge of Lake Wanaka and only a two minute walk from the free car park. This location can also get quite busy, naturally so best to arrive early if you are wanting to photograph it at dawn. However on this particular occasion I arrived a couple of hours before dusk only to find some wonderful misty conditions which in part helped to obscure the mountains behind allowing for the tree to become so much more visible and enjoy its own time in the limelight.

To shoot or not to shoot? That is the question. Actually there's never a moment of doubt in my mind as to whether to capture on camera an iconic and well known viewpoint. Sure, thousands before me have taken this scene but I don't worry about that, I simply want to do the very best job that I can in photographing it myself.
To that end, I am delighted with this image. It was shot while running my Glencoe photography workshop. This was the composition that I wanted but it involved clambering down into the pit as I call it to get water side as opposed to standing high up on the ledge above my head.
I had to shoot with my 16-35mm lenses at 16mm on a full frame Canon 5D MK4 to capture it the way I wanted to.
I hope you all like it. The coordinates for these falls are 56.647564, -4.866706

Taken on my first of three workshops on the magnificent Harris and Lewis this month. I shot this glorious sunset last Sunday while giving advice and guidance to my workshop participants.
This is a fabulous location to capture on camera at sunset if;
a) There's some decent colour in the sky to be had and
b) The wind is manageable and not wanting to throw you off the cliff, ha, ha.
Fortunately, the wind was manageable and I was able to shoot this scene at thirty seconds, which helped to smooth out the water a little. I was particularly interested in the white foamy sections of the water, especially when they surrounded the bases of the stunning sea stacks.
I am on Skye now until next Saturday, as my five night workshop starts on Monday evening followed by two back to back workshops on Harris & Lewis again. What a fantastic month November is shaping up to be.

WOW! WOW! WOW!
Yesterday, I finally managed to capture Jamink Church in heavy mist. I have been waiting six weeks to get an opportunity to experience this amazing location in these conditions and late yesterday afternoon, just by chance as I was passing en-route home from another location, the conditions were absolutely perfect.
Rolling heavy mist, a gorgeous subtle orange sunset, and a church on the end of a high ridge. It really does not get any better than that for me. I was in raptures and so excited to see what I had captured on the memory card. Isn't that just the best feeling? Knowing that you should have gold on your card and not being able to wait until you return home to see exactly what you have got. It really felt like Christmas morning and Santa definitely delivered, lol.
So here is the image of Jamnik Church surrounded by rolling mist with huge mountains providing the dramatic backdrop.
I do LOVE sLOVEnia 😊

Sunrise Over Man O War Beach, Dorset
Dorset was incredibly generous to me and my five lovely clients who attended my three day Dorset workshop at the weekend. This was a workshop that was due to take place in March 2020 but was put back twice due to the pandemic. Well, I am delighted that it went ahead with such beautiful conditions, light and colour.
This particular image was captured at 6.41am on Sunday but in order to arrive in good time to capture the pre-dawn colour, we left our hotel in Poole at 5am. These are very early starts for what was in this case, a ten minute period of time when the colour came and went but what a ten minutes it was.
For the eagle eyed amongst you, you will have noticed at the bottom of the image the new steps that have been built that take you down to the beach. I shall return on my own at some point to capture some images from the beach again.
I hope you like the image :D
