The first record of a mill at Worsbrough was in the Domesday book of 1086, although the exact location of the mill along the River Dove is unknown. The oldest part of the mill standing today dates from about 1625 and forms the two storey stone building known as the Old Mill, which houses the waterwheel. Before the Mill House was built in the mid 18th century the miller and his family would have lived in the mill itself. There are large fireplaces on both the ground and first floors and the lintel over the fireplace on the first floor is inscribed with several dates and initials of the millers.
The Old Mill was probably modernised in the early 1820’s to improve its output, and in the 1840’s the New Mill was built next door. The machinery in the New Mill was powered by a steam engine and a third floor, where grain could be stored in bulk, was added.
Trade for corn and flour began to drop off towards the end of the 19th century as cheap imported wheat came in from abroad.
This was taken the same day as the facing the fears one was done and we had come through the Washington National Forest out into the Cowpasture Valley in the beautiful (and favorite of ours) Highland County. The sun was so strong that day that it was making beautiful strong shadows and areas of light and dark. I don't know the name of this mill or anything else about it unfortunately.

A dear 90 year old widowed friend organises a monthly get together of people in her local pub, The George in Cranbrook Kent. She lives close to the Cranbrook Union mill, which is the tallest surviving smock mill in the British Isles. It is fully restored and in great condition. Built originally in 1814 it is a fascinating structure and there is an excellent interactive website for the mill at www.panoramastudio.co.uk/clients/cranbrook/index.html . These views were taken last night in slightly misty conditions after I had dropped my 90 year old friend back to her cottage.

Black and white treatment of this Lincolnshire Tower Mill, constructed in 1837 in the Tasmanian midlands town of Oatlands and still grinding.
Taken from the Humber Bridge, Hessle Mill and the country park. This mill was (unusually) not for grinding corn but for crushing chalk, so this is also known as the "Whiting Mill". It was built around 1810, the sails and cap were taken off in 1925 after which time it was powered by an engine. It finished production in the 1960s. Once upon a time it had five sails. It's now restored and re-opened as a visitor centre.

The mill is situated very close to the IJssel What this means when water is high you can see on this photo. On the other one in the comment box the same place in better weather in spring
We arrived at Crystal Mill. The beauty of this old structure was amazing. It is known as one of the most photographed historic sites in Colorado. I must admit, I took my fair share of photos too!
Crystal was incorporated in 1881. At its peak it had 400 residents, two newspapers, a pool hall, a men’s club, barber shop and two hotels. By 1915 only eight people lived in Crystal. Today there is a general store, public outhouse and several cabins available for short term rent. The few residents live in Crystal during the summer months only. We didn’t walk to the townsite of Crystal. It was starting to drizzle and we had a long hike and ride back.

Mill Pond waterfall at the start of the Aberjona River, Winchester MA.
This waterfall was a surprise find after following the Aberjona River upstream from Upper Mystic Lake - Winchester MA.
The autumn colours along the river were sensational, but I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled across this pond and waterfall in the town center of Winchester. Sandy's Island - a man made island - sits in the center of the pond and provides plenty of photo opportunities. Well worth a visit if you find yourself in the area.
With the first snow of the season finally sticking I went out trackside close to home to shoot the Seaview Transportation working down in Quonset-Davisville.
After digging out cars at Ocean State Yard over on the Davisville Branch half of the railroad they are now over on the Quonset side assembling their train on the east end of Mill Creek Yard before continuing east down the line to work mainstay customer, Toray Plastics. The two 2000 ft long sidings here are brand new and are tangible evidence of the continued growth by the Seaview and the Quonset Development Corporation to support rail served industries in the park.
SVTX GP10 1855 was built as a GP9 in Aug. 1956 for the Baltimore and Ohio as their #6467. Later rebuilt by ICG's Paducah Shop she bounced around on different shortlines until coming to Rhode Island in 2006 where she was given this snappy paint job.

Hagood Mill is located on Hagood Branch, earlier known as Jennings Creek, a tributary of the Twelve Mile River in Pickens, South Carolina. Although mills had existed on the site as early as the 1790s, the current mill was built in 1845 by James Hagood and it remained in the Hagood family and continued to operate until 1966.

This is where I walked across the street and took the shot of the barn with the fence and creek. The farmer on the porch told me this mill was operating when he was a kid and he was in his early fifties. Check out the size of the water wheel.
