The fall Nighthawk migration is in full swing! Dave Hoitt counted 241 Common Nighthawks flying south over Surry Dam and adjacent ridges from 6:27 to 7:14 p.m. on Monday, August 24, and sent along this fantastic photo of a male Nighthawk (identifiable by his white chin patch) in mid-air.

James, Ken, Leslie, Wendy and I went to the Platte river to see migrating sandhill cranes. On the way, we came across these snow geese instead. The math guy among us estimated there were at least 200,000 birds. I was glad I haven't watched Hitchcock's bird movie in a while.

About 500,000 migrating snow geese at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge. They are incredibly loud, and move as a group that, at times, looks like a dark cloud in the sky.

Been trying to catch one of these guys migrating through actually flying southwest. Finally got one today.

Migrating male monarch hanging out for the night in my yard. I hope he has a good night and a safe flight to Mexico!

Every flock we saw this morning across the valley was flying North instead of South. One of these individuals is tagged. See note.
