James, Ken, Leslie, Wendy and I went to the Platte river to see migrating sandhill cranes. On the way, we came across these snow geese instead. The math guy among us estimated there were at least 200,000 birds. I was glad I haven't watched Hitchcock's bird movie in a while.

Dights Falls has a two-metre high weir across the Yarra River at inner city Abbotsford. There is an 80m long concrete fishway/ladder on the weir to enable native fish species to swim to spawning and feeding grounds up to 2000km upstream. The falls remain an important meeting place for the indigenous Wurundjeri people. It is the likely burial place of their ancestor Billibellary, chief of the Yarra Yarra tribe. The old weir at Dights Falls dated back to 1895 when it was built to provide water to the Melbourne Flour Milling Company. The timber weir was replaced with a concrete one in 2012. A fishway was installed to boost native fish populations. The weir sets the water level of the Yarra River for about 16km upstream. There are 17 species of native freshwater fish in the Yarra - 11 need to migrate between saltwater and freshwater environments including the endangered Australian Grayling.
