Originally designed by renowned Engineer William Cubitt and opened in 1842, the dock was built for the Stockton to Darlington railway as a port for coal. Middlesbrough owes its substantial growth to the dock, bringing in coal and transporting steel. The site was closed in 1979, then in the 1980’s the Teesside Development Corporation
planned its regeneration.
The site has undergone immense change in recent years with the new Middlesbrough College, offices and the ‘Temenos’ art installation. Some of the original furniture has been retained, such as bollards and capstans. The dock has group value with the nearby listed Dock Clock Tower. The association with William Cubitt means that Middlesbrough Dock can be associated with many other significant docks such as Ellesmere Port.

Hippodrome Middlesbrough. Opened in 1906 and designed by G F Ward, the theatre was taken over by Gaumont in 1928 and became largely a cinema until closure in 1956, the auditorium being drastically altered for cinema use. Later uses have included a ballroom, bingo and a nightclub. Currently disused.

Middlesbrough celebrated Armed Forces day this year in the very heart of the Town Centre. The junction of Corporation Road and Linthorpe Road was the venue for the event.

The annual Middlesbrough Mela was held in it's new home of Centre Square in the town centre on Sunday afternoon with a great mix of food, fun, dance and singing. Judith Croft (centre) from Middlesbrough Council retired today and was given a presentation for her years of service to the Mela by the committee

The clubhouse for the new Middlesbrough Cycle Circuit arrived in sections on Tuesday (January 25). The clubhouse, with toilets, meeting room, catering facilities and storage space, will be available for use by all visitors to the circuit as well as serving as a base for cycling clubs and groups that use the circuit.
