Erik is Swedish, 21 years old and works as a volunteer for ERCI in the island of Lesvos.

How did Erik start as a volunteer?

Last summer during his holidays, Erik was traveling with friends around Europe. Through the media, he became aware of the Refugee crisis in Syria and that many of those refugees drowned at sea before ever reaching Greece. He thought that, perhaps, he could do something to help.

He got in touch with the Red Cross and other well-known ONGs to no avail. He donated money and blankets to some Swedish First Aid organizations, which worked with the refugees in Hungary. Further, he applied to work as a volunteer for the Red Cross, but he was not accepted. He took part in a protest at the marketplace in his town and there he heard a woman, who spontaneously took the microphone and said “I am fed up with hearing these sad stories, I am going to Budapest as volunteer to help, whoever wants to join me, please come and talk with me”.

Erik approached her and explained that he wanted to be a volunteer. Then, in September, Erik, the woman from the protest at the market place, and two other women went to Budapest to help thousands of people. After that, they returned to Sweden and founded an ONG, creating awareness in the population and in this way managed to raise funds to continue with their mission.

In December, Erik and 6 additional volunteers from his town came to Lesvos. They collected money to help not only people stranded at the beach freezing, but also the refugees already settled in the Moria Detention Center.

At Christmas time, Erik went back home to his family. However, he didn’t feel at ease knowing that the refugee crisis in Lesvos continued. Therefore, he bought a ticket to go back to Lesvos.

While working in Lesvos, Erik met Nora and Rebecca at the beach. Nora and Rebecca are independent volunteers that help with the refugees arriving by boat, and work alongside Nassos. Nassos is ERCI’s chef, with whom Erik has been working as a volunteer since March this year. Tomorrow, Erik will celebrate his one-year anniversary working as a volunteer.

The Story of Erik and little Angam

Towards the end of March 2016, during an extremely cold night, Erik and his mates from Camp Fire realized that a boat was coming close to the shore. Suddenly, they noticed that the boat stopped and that the people on board started to scream for help.

Erik, along with 10 other volunteers, ran into the sea and started swimming towards the boat to rescue them. Once they reached the boat, Erik grabbed one of the boat handles and peaked inside, noticing a beautiful young girl who looked back at him in awe, who most likely was wondering who this man with the light on his head was.

Erik greeted her in Arabic and started talking to her to calm her down, and then began to push the boat, paddling for 20-30 minutes. Once they reached the shore, and made sure that everybody was safe, Erik wanted to find the little girl, called Angam. He found her sitting on a blanket, completely alone. Angam smiled at him and greeted him with joy.

Erik helped her to change her wet socks and gave her a teddy bear. She took the teddy bear happily and hugged him. Erik asked her: “what are you going to name him?” Angam answered: “his name is Little Erik”. Angam introduced Erik to her family. However, they had to part ways immediately as there was another boat of refugees arriving to Camp Fire. Luckiliy, Erik was able to get Angam’s mother’s phone number to stay in touch.

Angam’s mother, along with her 6 children, were transferred to the Moria Detention Center. They lived there under really bad conditions, they slept outdoors on a thin blanket, they were to ask for permission in order to use the bathroom facilities, there weren’t any showers, the food was awful, etc. The next day, Angam’s mum called Erik. She wanted him to visit them at the Center as they were having many problems. (Moria is an ex-prison, and the life conditions are precarious). Erik began to visit them during the day as he had evening/night duties over at Camp Fire.

For the visit, Erik had to stay outside with a fence separating him from Agam’s family. Neither Erik could go into the camp, nor the family out- regime implemented by the local police. In this way, they spent an hour a day together with a fence in between, every day. Over time, Agam’s family moved to Karatepe Refugee Center, where they found more welcoming conditions and they were allowed to receive visitors.

Erik visited them during the following months. On the day that the family was finally allowed to leave for Athens, little Agam was very sad. Erik tried consoling her by telling her that she shouldn’t be sad, that this was not the end, and that she shouldn’t worry (with help of a female volunteer who acted as interpreter).

As the farewell became imminent, Agam started crying. Erik took a necklace he had on and put it around Angam’s neck and told her: “this is my favorite necklace, you can borrow it for now and promise me to bring it back next time we meet”. This seemed to do the trick, as Angam calmed down, knowing that she would see Erik again. Just like Sarah, due to the strenuous physical effort at sea, Erik also developed a back injury.

Happy Erik – the joy of giving.

Erik is almost always in a good mood. It is a pleasure to share time with someone like him.

When I asked him whether he is always in a good mood, he replied “ we all have our bad days, but I choose to be happy. Helping other goes beyond providing clothing and food, it is all about spreading love and happiness. Only through this, one is making the world a better place”.

I have found in Erik a truly happy person; considering the state of the world today it is something extremely rare to come upon. I feel that I have found a gift, the gift of giving.

Guns, Enuff Z’Nuff, Faster Pussycat, Dogs D’Amour, Cockney Rejects, Paul Collins Beat ecc.)
