The legendary American jazz pianist Hank Jones during his concert with the Metropole Orchestra at the The Hague Jazz Festival 2009.

Henry 'Hank' Jones was één van de hoofdacts tijdens The Hague Jazz 2009. De 90-jarige (!!) pianist trad op de eerste dag van het festival samen op met het Metropole Orkest onder leiding van Jim McNeely.

Hank Jones komt uit een muzikale familie. Met zijn broers, drummer Elvin (1927-2004) en trompettist (Thad (1923-86), behoort hij tot de grote jazzmusici die in de jaren vijftig met de bebop nieuwe horizonten in de jazz ontdekten. In zijn lange loopbaan werkte Jones met de ene legende na de andere: Coleman Hawkins, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Lester Young en Tommy Flanagan. Onlangs ontving Hank Jones een Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Een echte legende dus - en een voorrecht om deze man nog te mogen zien spelen.

De tweede dag van The Hague Jazz 2009 begon in de grote zaal met een concert van de Braziliaanse pianist/componist Ivan Lins en het Metropole Orkest.

Lins, koning van de Música Popular Brasileira, heeft tientallen albums uitgebracht, won drie Grammy Awards en zag zijn werk uitgevoerd door o.a. Sting, Michael Bublé, Barbra Streisand, Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald en vele anderen.

De fantastische dirigent en componist Maria Schneider leidde het Metropole Orkest, misschien wel het beste orkest van Nederland, tijdens het bijzondere optreden met trompettist Wallace Roney op The Hague Jazz 2010. Dit jaar vierde The Hague Jazz, Europa’s snelst groeiende jazzfestival, zijn eerste lustrum, want het festival bestaat alweer 5 jaar. Trompettist Wallace Roney en het Metropole Orkest onder leiding van Maria Schneider brachten tijdens The Hague Jazz 2010 in de grote zaal Chez Ella een verbluffend mooi eerbetoon aan Miles Davis en arrangeur Gil Evans. Zij speelden zowel Porgy & Bess als Sketches of Spain, twee meesterwerken die Davis en Evans in 1958 respectievelijk 1960 opnamen, en die gelden als de beste werken uit het repertoire van Miles Davis.

Dit jaar vierde The Hague Jazz, Europa’s snelst groeiende jazzfestival, zijn eerste lustrum, want het festival bestaat alweer 5 jaar. The Hague Jazz viel dit keer voor het eerst onder The Hague Festivals dat drie weken lang, van 10 t/m 27 juni, talloze Haagse evenementen op het gebied van cultuur, muziek en entertainment bundelt.

Tijdens The Hague Jazz gaf het Metropole Orkest als 'Orchestra in Residence' drie verschillende concerten. Tijdens het extra concert voor het festival speelde het orkest met voormalig Supertramp-zanger Roger Hodgson. Op de eerste dag van festival trad het Metropole Orkest aan met de legendarische, 90-jarige jazzpianist Hank Jones. En het derde concert werd gegeven met Ivan Lins, een reprise van eerdere concerten met de befaamde Braziliaanse singer-songwriter.

It was magical. Truly magical.

While going through spotify one day 8 weeks ago, I came across the new Basement Jaxx album. I've always been a fan of their dance music, but hearing their tracks being composed by the metropole orkest just blew my mind.

While listening to the album, the 'Hey U' track in particular caught my attention and ideas came flooding in of a parade of exotic animals performing the track. I felt compelled to animate something and here is a still from the finished project.
