This is my last image of 2016. It was a year of extreme ups and downs, failure and success, plenty of joy, happiness and just as much heartbreak and sadness. But I'm still here and I'm telling this story. So it's all good. I'm looking forward to see what 2017 will bring.

Featured is Downtown Dubai and of course, Burj Khalifa, captured and mixed from night time to daytime with my own, 'TDIB' (Time-Dilation Image Blending) post-processing method. Layered fog was that something extra this image needed to look special. And I got that too.

Happy New Year folks. See you on the other side.

Strategically located on Monte da Graça, the fort, one of the most sophisticated bastioned fortifications in Europe, has an imposing circular stone structure crowned by a distinctive yellow octagonal central redoubt. This redoubt, designed according to the Dutch method of fortification, houses the Governor's House on the upper floors, a chapel on the first floor and a cistern dug into the rock underground. Combining a defensive function with Baroque aesthetic elements, the structure reinforced the defenses of the border town, with the yellow building at the top also serving as the military command center.

Ridge and Furrow

What a day! Everything I touched went wrong! Last night the television decided to start turning itself off and on every few seconds. This morning I went for a walk with Lizzie - my son's lovely girlfriend. Took my camera with the intention of trying out the new lens only to realise that the battery was dead! Luckily, we were only a couple of hundred yards from the house so back we went to get a fresh one. The first time I tried to take a photo I was horrified to realise that I hadn't put a memory card in. Then we took a wrong path and had to return the way we had come - but that did allow this view.... Got home and made some coffee, only to have the coffee machine throw a half filled mug across the worktop!! It then became apparent that there was something wrong with little Baxter - he was terribly uncomfortable and agitated. After an hour or so of him not settling, Peter called the emergency vet and we met her at the surgery. It cost us £100 to be told there was nothing wrong with him, so now I feel that I over-walked him to breaking point!! There were a couple of other things that were equally annoying and I will be very glad to see tomorrow....

HOW I PHOTOGRAPH SMALL, FAST BIRDS IN FLIGHT

(A lot of the credit for this method goes to my new friend named Brian who I met at Fletcher Wildlife Gardens yesterday. He gave me some key tips that improved my existing method - thanks a million Brian!)

1. Find a location with lots of birds flying back and forth in a predictable, repeating pattern. Feeders are perfect.

2. Set up your tripod in order to give you the desired approach angle of the birds coming in to the feeder. If you want images of birds without seeds in their mouths you have to catch them coming in, not leaving. Also, make test shots to try to get a nice background or at least one you can work with in post processing.

3. Focus your lens on a spot on the outer edge of feeder closest to where the majority of the birds are coming to it. If they are coming to the feeder from the trees to the left then focus on the far left edge of the feeder.

4. Gently switch your lens to manual focus using the switch on the lens, thereby disabling the auto focus.

5. Rotate your tripod head or gimbal head slightly to the left so that your field of view does not have the feeder in it, but only the small air corridor immediately to the left of it. This is your target shooting zone. Lock down your tripod/gimbal to prevent any tilting or panning.

6. Set your aperture to as high a number as you dare to go as this will increase your depth of field and thereby increase your odds of getting your subjects in sharp focus. Unfortunately, the higher the aperture setting the higher your ISO will be, but that's still better than having a blurry image. You'll need to experiment. For this reason full sun days are the best.

7. Set your shutter speed to 1/2500th of a sec. You can experiment with faster and slower.

8. I set the ISO to Auto-ISO as this has been my preference for many years... it works very well for me.

9. Set your shutter activation speed to maximum speed. I use 10 frames per second on my Nikon D500, but I've had good results at 6 to 7 fps.

10. When you're all set, stand up straight and don't look through your lens, but look in the direction from where the birds will be coming and have your finger on the shutter button. When you see one of your darling little models coming in, get ready to rattle off a short burst of no more than 3-4 shots.

After a bit of practice you'll be able to get a framed bird in almost every burst. However, in even 10 such captured flight images only a few, if any, will be useable because many don't have nice open wing positions and most are not quite sharp enough to be useable. Nevertheless, you should be able to come away from a 1-2 hour session with a keeper or two,

A word about bird behavior. I was there for about 3 hours and I've spent lots of time at other public bird feeders and what I've found is that the really busy group-feeding happens in waves. There are always a few birds here and there coming it to the feeders, but then there's a whole feeding frenzy with many dozens of birds coming in one after another giving you lots of opportunities to capture some good images. Be patient and the next wave will be sure to happen.

Good luck and enjoy!

Rudy

My first bake from Chainbaker videos I've been watching the past few weeks.

I was all excited to try it and followed instructions and measurements exactly.

My sister declared the loaf "epic" from this photo of it ... but, ... a couple of hours after this..the crust looked all wrinkly...and, the inside was a disaster. I was almost too embarrassed to show it... but, it's always an experiment with bread it seems.

And, so, in the interest of science ...I show my disaster in the photo beside this one.

The crust is pretty much detached from the crumb... a huge air space showed up about 2/3 of the way into the loaf.

Such a disappointment.

The only redeeming feature in my mind is the flavour and actual texture of the crumb.

Amazing really. It makes great toast... but, don't try putting on anything where that gaping hole is... it'll dribble right through....

oh, well.... there's always next time...... and, next I'm doing the Cheesy buns...... can't go wrong with cheese and buns....

This Small Green Beetle is metallic green in colour often with red or golden tones, with very short on abdomen. Their larvae are C-shaped and live in soil, feed on roots and other organic matter. They pupate in soil as well. When disturbed, the beetle employs the drop and fly method to escape. They are active during the day and quite ready to fly on a sunny day.

The Messier star cluster M35 at top right, along with nearby faint nebulas: IC 443, the arc of nebulosity left of centre, and NGC 2174 at bottom right, all set in a very colourful starfield.

IC 443 in Gemini is also known as the Jellyfish Nebula, while NGC 2174 in Orion is aka the Monkeyhead Nebula. IC 443 is a supernova remnant, while NGC 2174 is a star forming region.

The images for this stack were taken on a less-than-ideal night with high haze adding the natural glows to the stars, accentuating their colours. The two stars at left, Tejat Posterior (aka Mu Geminorum, left) and Propus (aka Eta Geminorum, centre), are both bright red giant stars. Other stars in the field are hot blue stars.

This is a stack and blend of: 10 x 4-minute exposures through an Astronomik CLS clip-in filter blended with 8 x 8-minute exposures taken though a 12nm H-Alpha clip-in filter to add in the red nebulosity. All were through the SharpStar 61mm EDPHII apo refractor at f/4.5 and with the Canon EOS Ra camera at ISO 1600 for the CLS filtered images and at ISO 3200 for the H-Alpha filtered shots.

Taken from home for a demo image, on a hazy night, March 29, 2022, with the MGEN III autoguider performing inter-frame dithering. It serves as a demo of blending in H-Alpha and also making use of a hazy night!

Processing details: The H-Alpha shots were converted to monochrome and processed in Adobe Camera Raw, and blended into the colour image stack with a Lighten blend mode and with colorization added using the Debra Ceravolo method of applying a Hue&Saturation layer set to Colorize at 340 Red and a Lightness of ~50. Masking was applied so the H-alpha image shows through only where the nebulosity is, to prevent the overall sky colour turning red.

No darks or flats were applied. All aligned, stacked and blended in Photoshop. Framing planned with SkySafari to include the stars at left and right of the frame.

Learned a new method today ! Thanks {dramadancer1} ♥

A new trio of examples of ‘data sonification’ from NASA missions provides a new method to enjoy an arrangement of cosmic objects. Data sonification translates information collected by various NASA missions -- such as the Chandra X-ray Observatory, Hubble Space Telescope, and Spitzer Space Telescope -- into sounds.

This image of the Bullet Cluster (officially known as 1E 0657-56) provided the first direct proof of dark matter, the mysterious unseen substance that makes up the vast majority of matter in the Universe. X-rays from Chandra (pink) show where the hot gas in two merging galaxy clusters has been wrenched away from dark matter, seen through a process known as "gravitational lensing" in data from Hubble Space Telescope (blue) and ground-based telescopes. In converting this into sound, the data pan left to right, and each layer of data was limited to a specific frequency range. Data showing dark matter are represented by the lowest frequencies, while X-rays are assigned to the highest frequencies. The galaxies in the image revealed by Hubble data, many of which are in the cluster, are in mid-range frequencies. Then, within each layer, the pitch is set to increase from the bottom of the image to the top so that objects towards the top produce higher tones.

This method for light smoke grilling is great for fish, etc. The Steven Raichlen cast iron smoking plancha is comprised of a box and a grate. I fill the box with wood chips, heat the gas grill to about 500F and the chips will start smoking. Turn the grill heat down and place the seasoned fish on the grate. The fish is in close contact with the smoke, 6 minutes on the flesh side, 4 minutes on the skin side. You get this wonderful non-burned patina, light smoke flavor, juicy fish. Thatching methods have traditionally been passed down from generation to generation, and numerous descriptions of the materials and methods used in Europe over the past three centuries survive in archives and early publications.

In some equatorial countries, thatch is the prevalent local material for roofs, and often walls. There are diverse building techniques from the ancient Hawaiian hale shelter made from the local ti leaves (Cordyline fruticosa), lauhala (Pandanus tectorius) or pili grass (Heteropogon contortus).

The multi-tiered Meru towers of Besakih temple, Bali, uses black ijuk fibres.

Palm leaves are also often used. For example, in Na Bure, Fiji, thatchers combine fan palm leaf roofs with layered reed walls. Feathered palm leaf roofs are used in Dominica. Alang-alang (Imperata cylindrica) thatched roofs are used in Hawaii and Bali. In Southeast Asia, mangrove nipa palm leaves are used as thatched roof material known as attap dwelling. In Bali, Indonesia, the black fibres of Arenga pinnata called ijuk is also used as thatched roof materials, usually used in Balinese temple roof and meru towers. Sugar cane leaf roofs are used in Kikuyu tribal homes in Kenya.

Wild vegetation such as water reed (Phragmites australis), bulrush/cat tail (Typha spp.), broom (Cytisus scoparius), heather (Calluna vulgaris), and rushes (Juncus spp. and Schoenoplectus lacustris) was probably used to cover shelters and primitive dwellings in Europe in the late Palaeolithic period, but so far no direct archaeological evidence for this has been recovered. People probably began to use straw in the Neolithic period when they first grew cereals—but once again, no direct archaeological evidence of straw for thatching in Europe prior to the early medieval period survives.

Many indigenous people of the Americas, such as the former Maya civilization, Mesoamerica, the Inca empire, and the Triple Alliance (Aztec), lived in thatched buildings. It is common to spot thatched buildings in rural areas of the Yucatán Peninsula as well as many settlements in other parts of Latin America, which closely resemble the method of construction from distant ancestors. The first Americans encountered by Europeans lived in structures roofed with bark or skin set in panels that could be added or removed for ventilation, heating, and cooling. Evidence of the many complex buildings with fiber-based roofing material was not rediscovered until the early 2000s. French and British settlers built temporary thatched dwellings with local vegetation as soon as they arrived in New France and New England, but covered more permanent houses with wooden shingles.

In most of England, thatch remained the only roofing material available to the bulk of the population in the countryside, in many towns and villages, until the late 1800s. Commercial distribution of Welsh slate began in 1820, and the mobility provided by canals and then railways made other materials readily available. Still, the number of thatched properties actually increased in the UK during the mid-1800s as agriculture expanded, but then declined again at the end of the 19th century because of agricultural recession and rural depopulation. A 2013 report estimated that there were 60,000 properties in the UK with a thatched roof; they are usually made of long straw, combed wheat reed or water reed.

Gradually, thatch became a mark of poverty, and the number of thatched properties gradually declined, as did the number of professional thatchers. Thatch has become much more popular in the UK over the past 30 years, and is now a symbol of wealth rather than poverty. There are approximately 1,000 full-time thatchers at work in the UK, and thatching is becoming popular again because of the renewed interest in preserving historic buildings and using more sustainable building materials.

From now on # I will host "Lot No.402_".

The work of Leonardo da Vinci who was sleeping.

That is the number when it was put up for auction.

No sign was written on the work.

So this work couldn't conclude that it was his work.

However # as a result of various appraisals # it was exposed to the sun.

A work that no one notices. A work that speaks quietly without a title.

About my book.

I published a book a long time ago.

At that time # I uploaded my interview as a PDF on the internet.

Its Japanese and English.

I will publish it for free.

For details # I explained to the Amazon site.

How to write a novel.

How to take a picture.

A sense of distance to the work.

All of these have something in common.

I wrote down what I felt and left it.

I hope my text will be read by many people.

Thank you.

Main story

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

Princess Merida from Pixar's Brave will always have a place in my heart if only because of our shared wild curls. But there's something about her determination that also resonates. Her famous line from all the trailers--"If you had the chance to change your fate, would you?"--with that thick Scottish accent kept running through my head this past week, something about that passion to take on a challenge and control of your life, and suddenly I was having visions of a dark forest and glowing box full of magic light and couldn't get it out of my head.

The good part is, I knew exactly how I'd pull it off. (Old wooden box lined with tinfoil. Orange-gelled speedlite triggered remotely, pointed at the tinfoil to bounce the light up. Wait until dusk to tone down the ambient light. Find shadowy section of local woods. Brenizer/expansion method to make the scene feel wider but focused. Emphasized blues in post.) But oh man it sounded like so much work and I've gotten lazy. Stop throwing on dresses and plopping yourself down on a path for a while and it starts to sound way too complicated to take up again.

But, as you can see, I did it, even though my creativity-inertia was complaining the whole time. Once I actually got out there and peered around a few corners to find the perfect path section (and lucked out with not a single onlooker to ruin the ethereal alone-in-the-forest vibe!), I had the best time. The shot worked out almost exactly as the vision in my head. And I really need to do this more often. When I get the chance to change my fate, I take it.
