By three methods we may learn wisdom

* First by reflection,

which is noblest.

* Second by imitation,

which is easiest.

* Third by experience,

which is the bitterest.

I have been in a rather dark mood here recently. And during this week, I was listening to the music that I have a link to above on Youtube. I find Secession Studios music to be so emotional...And it brought to my mind a particular statue that I have in SL. So then I was frantically rummaging through my SL inventory....and once I found "Lady of Death"-- I quickly rezzed her... and this is what my mind saw.....

Smoke on the horizon is from back burning. A method to reduce the amount combustible vegetation on the ground. View of Dales Gorge, Karijini National Park. Its climate can best be described as tropical semi-desert. A highly variable, mainly summer rainfall of 250–350 mm, often associated with thunderstorms and cyclones, is accompanied by temperatures frequently topping 40 degrees Celsius. The ideal times to visit the park are late autumn, winter and early spring. Winter days are warm and clear, but nights are cold and sometimes frosty.

Massive mountains and escarpments rise out of the flat valleys. The high plateau is dissected by breathtaking gorges, and stony, tree-lined watercourses wind their way over the dusty plain. Erosion has slowly carved this landscape out of rocks that are over 2,500 million years old. (information from Explore Parks W.A)

For an image, the term monochrome is usually taken to mean the same as black-and-white or, more likely, grayscale, but may also be used to refer to other combinations containing only tones of a single color, such as green-and-white or green-and-black. It may also refer to sepia displaying tones from light tan to dark brown or cyanotype (“blueprint”) images, and early photographic methods such as Ambrotype, Tintype and Daguerreotype, each of which may be used to produce a monochromatic image.

Taken for the Macro Monday theme of 'slices' of food.

A slice of toast loaded with Vintage Dundee Orange Marmalade.

"In 1797 the first jar of marmalade was produced in Dundee, Scotland. Mackays, a family business, is now the last remaining producer of the Dundee Orange Marmalade in the Dundee area - 'The Home of Marmalade'

Using traditional open copper pans, the highest quality bitter Seville oranges and their authentic methods, ensure rich fruit flavours in every batch and that special home-made taste you expect"

It was delicious!!

Trig points (or trig pillars) were used in map making. They have now been replaced by other surveying methods such as aerial photography and GPS, and are thus largely redundant. Many walkers in the UK are drawn magnetically to the little white structures at the top of hills and mountains. Little Orme is a limestone hill on the coast in North Wales.

The Brenizer method, sometimes referred to as bokeh panorama or bokehrama, is a photographic technique characterized by the creation of a digital image exhibiting a shallow depth of field in tandem with a wide angle of view. Created by use of panoramic stitching techniques applied to portraiture, it was popularized by photographer Ryan Brenizer.

The combination of these characteristics enables a photographer to mimic the look of large format film photography with a digital camera. Large format cameras use a negative that is at least 4×5 inches (102×127 mm) and are known for their very shallow depth of field when using a wide aperture and their unique high level of clarity, contrast and control. Image sensor formats of common digital cameras, in comparison, are much smaller, ranging down to the tiny sensors in camera phones. The Brenizer method increases the effective sensor size of the camera, simulating the characteristics of large format photography.

While the aesthetics of this form of imaging most closely resemble large format analog photography, its look has also led it to being compared to tilt shift photography. Both techniques create images that exhibit an unusually shallow depth of field.

PS: additional explanation in comment. Please do tell if you see the link.

Most often my method is a simple attention to God combined with a general sense of hunger for God. I find myself often attached to God with the great sweetness and delight of an infant at the mother's breast. I hesitate to use the expression, but the inexpressible sweetness which I taste and experience there is as if I were at the bosom of God at all times. Sometimes my thoughts wander away from God by necessity or infirmity. But soon an inner desire brings me back to God. This inward yearning is so delightful and delicious that I am ashamed to describe it.

I decided to test cooking breakfast off the back of my truck for when I go on hikes in Colorado in a couple weeks. A toasted croissant is a great way to start any hike!

The original version is a color photograph (flic.kr/p/Xnh7BW). I wanted to see it in B&W because, in my opinion, the bright green tree foliage distracts from the subject in the original color version. To me, this type of photograph is more about light than it is about color, but I like the green bottle and wood table in the color version, so it's hard for me to decide. Let me know which version(s) you like or dislike.

Thanks for a look at an industrial site.

We've been having fantastic early spring weather here in the South of the UK lately, so I've been taking advantage of getting out as early as possible to get some shots during the golden hour. This morning there was SPECTACULAR light with beautiful shadows, mist lifting and clouds drifting. And it was quite cold. Couldn't ask for more! :)

This is a panorama of multiple images, shot using the Brenizer method in 665nm Infrared.

Hope you like it! :)

Straight from Central Cats-ing? :-)

At first, I honestly thought this cat was simply a cardboard cutout and couldn't believe my luck when I saw he/she was real and not just part of the decorations, ha ha. And only on zooming in to crop, did I see 'that look' :-) I wonder if he/she is on contract to sit just like that for the next 3 weeks - being paid in yummy crunchies by the looks of it :-)

(Slight pun re 'lucky' timing, since I've personally always thought a black cat brings GOOD luck not bad.)

As I captured the morning light at Mesquite Dunes, I couldn't help but notice the abundance of vegetation on this side of the dune field. With my 100-400 lens at my disposal, I decided to experiment with isolating some of the plants against the sand layers. Some of the plants appeared to be on the verge of being swallowed up by the sand, and I found a perfect example of this. Luckily, we were the only ones there that morning, and the wind had been strong the previous night, leaving behind detailed patterns in the dunes. I was fascinated by the stark contrast between the plant's ragged appearance and the beautiful, serene, repeating patterns of the sand.

Square net fishing in Phatthalung, Thailand, is a traditional method practiced in the Thale Noi wetlands. Fishermen use bamboo platforms with suspended square nets operated by a pulley and counterweight system. The nets are lowered into the water to trap fish as they swim by, relying on the fishermen’s knowledge of tides and fish behavior. The catch is collected using smaller scoop nets. This sustainable method allows smaller fish to escape, preserving ecosystems. Fishing often occurs in the early morning or evening and reflects generations of cultural tradition. The bamboo structures, especially at sunrise, have become iconic, attracting tourists and photographers. Square net fishing symbolizes the harmonious connection between people and nature, blending livelihood and heritage in this serene region.

Funny story. I needed to fly my drone amongst the mangrove roots to get this panorama capture. Elated after the final frame was shot I mistakenly flew straight up into a guide wire and crashed the drone into the river. Just 5m offshore, I quickly stripped down and dove into the water to recover the drone. Down about 4m it was cold and pitch black with no sign of the bottom. Failure. The hotel was able to find me a salvage diver who was able to recover the drone a week later using the last recorded GPS coordinates. I received the corroded drone and more importantly the still functioning micro SD card a couple of weeks after my return from the trip. Elation again upon successful import, and panorama stitch.

British Red Cross.

By pioneering fundraising methods such as house-to-house collections, penny-a-week appeals and the popularisation of charity shops, the Duke of Gloucester’s Red Cross and St John Appeal Fund raised the equivalent of £7.7 billion. As well as raising this extraordinary amount, they also paved the way for many of the fundraising techniques that we rely upon today.

Background

The Duke of Gloucester’s Red Cross and St John Appeal Fund was launched in September 1939 to raise funds for those affected by the Second World War. By 1946 the appeal had raised £54,324,408, which is the equivalent of £7,700,000,000 today1, making it the largest charitable fund ever raised in the UK. The proceeds of the fund went to the Red Cross and St John War Organisation. To see more, visit: sofii.org/case-study/british-red-cross-the-7.7-billion-ap...

oh hey. i'm on rituals now. cargocollective.com/rituals

there's a ton of wonderful photographers on here so i'm pretty excited.

After finding Adamson's calotype method didn't permit much time between coating and developing when it was warm here, I decided to try Arsène Pélegry's method as modified by Rick Lanning. Aside from some speckles (my fault) it worked a treat. It's 2 stops slower than Adamson's method and perhaps more expensive, but the negatives just might last long enough to take on a trip - that would be wonderful.

Plus it seems to work well right up to the edge. I had problems with my Adamson's negatives where the varying ratios of chemicals - plus my fingerprints - would cause a lot of crap near the borders.

I'm trying a slightly different sharpening method for very high-ISO images, which these are. I'm not sure if they look natural enough - I hope so.

Macro Mondays - theme of February 4th, 2019: Brew

Meaning: a macro of something related to the preparation or enjoyment of coffee, tea or herbal infusion (ingredients, utensils or method).

This is a (used) bamboo whisk (known as a "chasen") - a tool (utensil) to prepare Macha tea, a finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea leaves.

The Matcha powder and hot water (70 - 85 °C) are mixed and then frothed up whith this bamboo whisk - moving it in a zig zag motion (like the letter "W" or "M").

Measurement:

This Matcha Tea Whisk has a total diameter of 5 cm - here you see 3.5 cm of it. The bristles are under one millimetre wide.

Happy Macro Monday everyone !

Thanks a lot for your feedback - I appreciate it very much.

I will be browsing late in the evening :)
