Featured as a setting in the 1981 James Bond thriller “For Your Eyes Only,” the Holy Trinity Monastery is perhaps the most recognizable of the Meteora monasteries. Situated atop a lone rocky pinnacle, it’s also one of the most challenging monasteries to reach. From the parking area, visitors first descend 140 steps down a steep ravine, and then climb another 140 steps up to the compound.

With its domed chambers, fully restored 17th-century frescoes and picture-perfect vistas, the Holy Trinity Monastery rewards visitors with an experience that won’t be soon forgotten.

The monastery complex of Meteora, Greece, sits thousands of feet above the ground, making it one of the most remote places to live and worship in the world.

While 30 monasteries were built over the centuries, today only six remain active.

A greek Monestary on top of a cliff. Meteora really impressed me, the landscape is breathtaking. I have seen a lot of greece and i did not expect the cliffs and mountains to be as impressive as they were. Deffidently a place to visit.

Meteora

Meteora is the biggest and most important group of monasteries in Greece after those in Mount Athos. We can locate the first traces of their history from 11th c. when the first hermits settled there. The rock monasteries have been characterized by UNESCO as a unique phenomenon of cultural heritage and they form one of the most important stations of cultural map of Greece.

Die Metéora-Klöster, östlich des Pindos-Gebirges nahe der Stadt Kalambaka in Thessalien, Griechenland gelegen, gehören zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Der Name Metéora leitet sich von meteorizo ab, was „in die Höhe heben“ bedeutet.

Οι επιβλητικοί βράχοι των Μετεώρων και τα γαντζωμένα πάνω τους μοναστήρια συνθέτουν ένα τοπίο μαγευτικό και υπερβατικό, ένα φαινόμενο μοναδικό στον κόσμο που προστατεύεται από την UNESCO σαν μνημείο της παγκόσμιας πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς αλλά και ιδιαίτερης φυσικής ομορφιάς.

Χίλιοι περίπου θεόρατοι βράχοι που θυμίζουν πέτρινο δάσος προκαλούν δέος και έκσταση στον επισκέπτη. Αυτά πρέπει να ήταν και τα συναισθήματα των πρώτων μοναχών που εγκαταστάθηκαν εδώ δημιουργώντας ένα μοναστικό κέντρο που σήμερα μετρά έξι αιώνες ζωής. Το πρώτο οργανωμένο μοναστήρι - το Μεγάλο Μετέωρο - λειτούργησε το 14ο αιώνα, αν και οι πρώτοι ερημίτες μοναχοί ήρθαν στην περιοχή τον 11ο αιώνα.

Από τα 24 μοναστήρια που υπήρχαν, σήμερα σώζονται μόνο έξι εκ των οποίων τα δύο είναι γυναικεία. Ο επισκέπτης έχει τη δυνατότητα να θαυμάσει το μοναδικό τοπίο, την αρχιτεκτονική, τις αγιογραφίες και να δει από κοντά τη ζωή των μοναχών.

Κάτω ακριβώς από τους βράχους βρίσκεται η όμορφη πόλη της Καλαμπάκας και το γραφικό χωριό Καστράκι. Απέναντι από τους βράχους, η οροσειρά της Πίνδου συμπληρώνει το πανέμορφο κάδρο.

De los 24 monasterios originales de Meteora actualmente sólo están habitados unos seis a los que se sube gracias a las escaleras construidas no hace mucho. Antes sólo se podía llegar arriba mediante un montacargas o cuerdas. En la imagen, el monasterio de San Nicolás Anapafsas.

El conjunto de los monasterios de Meteora es Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde 1988.
