An elaborate metalwork spiral staircase at our hotel in Delhi.

Sutton Coldfield's ancient parish church of Holy Trinity had long been on my 'to do' list, having failed to gain entry on my last visit a couple of years ago. I'd been able to enjoy it's red sandstone exterior, with it's mixture of 15th century and Victorian elements, but it's internal appearance and contents largely remained a mystery to me, until now.

I was very impressed by the interior with it's rich jumble of furnishings and painted ceilings, a real gem with plenty of interest. The church itself is quite restored (the outer north aisle is a Victorian extension), and the arcades are all curiously rounded from mid 16th century and later rebuildings and reveal galleries in the aisles. It all looked quite gloomy with so much red stone and dark woodwork, but C.E.Bateman's early 20th century ceiling decoration (nave, chancel and north chapel) is gorgeous and does much to cheer up an otherwise sombre interior. There is some fine post-Reformation woodwork in the chancel screens and stalls, much having been ejected from Worcester Cathedral during Scott's restoration.

There is some good glass, the east window is very fruity 1850s by Gibbs, but my favourite glass was the fine 1907 Supper at Emmaus by Mary Lowndes, along with the Yoxall & Whitford windows nearby in the south chapel. There are some interesting monuments, several fine tablets, a big Baroque piece with busts and the tomb and effigy of Bishop Vesey, supposedly the original 1550s figure but looking so thoroughly renewed I was convinced it was a modern pastiche (Pevsner attributes too much tlc!). There is also a fine Norman font, originally in nearby Nether Whitacre church prior to it's rebuilding.

I had heard good things about this church after my first attempted visit, so after concluding my business in neighbouring Streetly I came straight here. It is unfortunately still generally kept locked, so I tried asking at the parish centre opposite, and after an initially slightly lukewarm reception (perhaps more warning would have helped) a lady kindly offered to open up for me. I mentioned I was eager to see the church and it's furnishings as they are, having heard about plans for a major reordering, though owing to the huge costs involved this was dismissed as being some way off, perhaps 5 or so years, so no concrete plans just yet.

This immigrant Chinese grandfather was working this rod into a piece for his stove. He didn't speak English -- and I don't speak Chinese -- so his grandson interpreted.

Definitely should be viewed larger.

I was putting a curve into this plant-hanger-to-be.

here I'm derusting the pan that the bracket attaches to. Once I've derusted for a while this way, I'll flip it over so the portion out of the water now is submurged.

Do you ever just get a need to make some chain? Sometimes I do.

I just had to decorate my moleskin. This is the journal I use for all my metal art ideas.

To help the concentricity, I cut the final size of the 1/2" dia arbor end in place, holding the lathe tool in the vise. Then I took a skim cut on the bearing surface to make sure it was parallel to the mill table. I have a mark on the arbor to match up with the label on the collet to help reduce runout.

Gold and Siver Metalwork "Recamado" Embroidery

RECAMADO means "raised-work" embroidery. It is also known as "Stumpwork" or "Contrapusto".

"Recamado" is a type of embroidery where the pattern is raised from the fabric using carboard, bits of cloth or other types of padding. The metallic threads are then stiched over the padding to create a raised, three-dimensional effect.

This is the cobbled up setup for tapping in the mill right now. The small live center rides on a pin in the chuck and centers the tap wrench. It has more play than I would like, but seems to work fine.

Since I'm in Kenosha this weekend, I decided to get my grandfather's tools and equipment out and do some metalwork. I've been promising myself I'd find time for it this summer, but life's been so busy.

I wish there was somewhere I could keep this all outside. There really isn't, and getting it all out of the basement is not an insignificant task.

This is a knife that was given to a friend of mine by a knife maker in Prince George.

This awesome gateway really caught my eye for it´s classical and funky combination.

OAS Huronia Chapter member David Lamb has learned how first nations made this type of knife from metal files that were trade goods they received from the Northwest Fur Company, circa. 1790-1850. The First Nations people would heat and work the metal files to make these knife tools which were used somewhat like a draw knife in the making of ribs and other structural components of birch bark canoes. David has done a lot of research into this subject and has perfected the techniques.
